I live in Harpers Ferry WV about 20 mins from martinsburg and it’s pretty wealthy here. The scenery is stunning and I feel so lucky to live in such a beautiful place. Not to mention we get over 500,000 tourist visiting our area every year. As someone who has lived near Charles Town and Martinsburg my whole life, it depresses me to see how this place has turned. Homelessness in Charles Town has taken a huge turn since the pandemic and Martinsburg is just terrible. I am currently trying to get out of this place ASAP. A lot of the drug problems comes from the heroin highway which comes from Baltimore and stretches to Winchester VA. Harpers Ferry is a beautiful town but get out of the downtown region and you’ll see some very beat down trailers with people you are 90% sure do some form of drugs. TLDR, this place has taken a real turn since i was born in 2007.

Not only is having people donate towards a house and then simply transferring them the money for whatever misleading, and possibly even literal fraud (If I remember correctly gofundme funds have to go directly towards the cause advertised) - but do these people look like they’re 60k richer from the time Mark first got in contact with them? The house pretty much looks the same, they’re still wearing the same old clothes, and nothing around that property seems to have gotten fixed. I could be wrong, but objectively it definitely doesn’t look like all of that money went to them directly, not even close. What was that money spent on? Is there maybe someone close to them profiting off of the money that was sent? I paid attention. Betty was asked if Mark had given an *update* not whether or not he'd been giving them *money*. I would imagine that there'd been no house discussions recently as the Whittakers had been draining the funds. Looks like you'll now be the one receiving the calls from the family asking for the thousands of dollars they've become accustom to receiving as well as taking care of the taxes for them.

I live about 25-30 minutes away from Huntington, the drug problem is horrible and everybody knows somebody who has been affected from it. You can barely take your kids to Ashland Central Park because it seems every other day, someone's child is finding a needle. Almost every other street you see someone passed out on the sidewalk or passed out in their cars. Seems that no matter where you go, no one is safe from drugs. Edit: my own personal experience was when I was driving my friend and her son back from the park when we saw two little babies running near a busy road, the posted speed is 35, but everyone was flying down the road and there were no parents in sight. Long story short, cops and cps show up and take these two babies, ages 1 and 3. Their parents where passed out with copious amounts of drugs and alcohol in their system. The house had no power and no running water and these babies were filthy with diapers sagging to their knees.

If you had watched his series on the Whitakers you would have known that. He truly cared for them and was so giving to them. You would have known that too if you watched the videos.
