There was, scarily, a real chance that the Axis could have won, had it not been for Hitler, probably the most prominent Axis force, making many poor decisions. For example, he dismissed multiple effective military generals, and take direct control over many forces for himself, or otherwise delegate such duties to low-quality leaders. He also decided to have the country invade the Soviet Union, bringing a deadly force to a second front for his Reich. This is especially considering that he did not retreat his forces back home during winter, even when scorched-earth tactics were used by the Soviets to give his forces nothing to use as shelter. Overall, we can be grateful today that Hitler was an irrational idiot in terms of leadership. Had someone else been in his place, there is a real chance that much of Europe could be held in the tight grip of an evil dictatorship led by the Nazis today.

When it comes to military decisions, he was actually on point, at least, until total collapse. Blitzkrieg was actually one of the main reforms that the German military had undergone, and it wasn't welcomed by the older hierarchy due to a different concept of war. Operation Case Yellow was a huge success, and the decision was made by Hitler to authorize the operation, even though HQ had a different plan Unrestricted submarine warfare was seen as "cowardly" by the German Navy command, Hitler put a man in charge who concentrated solely on submarines and sunk 3000-5000 ships. The Air Force was something new at that time for the German military. German higher hierarchy was conservative on war conduct Failure on all fronts from 1944 was the endpoint for Germany, given the atrocities they committed, they didn't surrender knowing full well the consequences from USSR. Of course, you know the past history, and can judge at decision makings at large, but at that time, the information they had, gave them a different kind of picture. By the way, after Germany invaded Poland, German diplomats called for peace, which was rejected. German goals was Soviet Union, and even UK/France had plans in invading it, by bombing Baku oil fields German economy in 1930s was in shambles, until Hitler came along.
