Going on my fourth year teaching high school English. I love the kids. I teach at a predominantly Hispanic school in Houston, and the kids are very sweet but: 1) kids don’t take school seriously 2) there’s no real consequences for them not taking school seriously This leads to a lot of conflict with administrators who complain about STAAR scores (standardized test), failure rates, and attendance issues. We can’t make kids care about school, so stop setting these unrealistic expectations and treating us like we’re not motivating the kids or making engaging lessons for them. At this point, as long as they show up, try, and don’t give me any behavioral problems I’m not stressing.

I’ve been teaching for 32 years and I’m literally exhausted! If it wasn’t for the fact that I have financial responsibilities, I would have taken an early retirement package. Public school districts really need to lower the classroom size, pay teachers more money, find someway to streamline all the paperwork, and make sure there are consequences for students or parents that threaten the safety of any teacher.

Yes, a lot of it is misogyny. I took women's studies courses in college and it has been shown that whenever women are the majority in a career field, the pay goes down. In addition, there is a "male flight". Men begin leaving the profession. Secretaries used to be all males...think about the secretary in that Christmas movie who was Tiny Tim's dad. Lol! Compare average salaries for all male dominated fields vs female dominated fields. People will try and make excuses or say it isn't misogyny, but we all know that if the majority of teachers were men, it would be considered a very important profession and they would be paid much more. I know so many men who make so much more than me and they only have a high school diploma. I have a Bachelor's and half of a Master's.

The main issue under all of these band-aid issues, that we never hear teachers discuss, is that it shouldn't be this amazing miracle caught on camera that students sat and did their work. It shouldn't be amazing that they want to be in class and are engaged in learning. Go to a classroom in Japan and tell me how the students behave. Tell a Nigerian mother that her son doesn't "want" to go to school. Watch students in India, regardless of pandemic and poverty, attend school ready to work. Teaching wouldn't be so hard if we had a culture of discipline with our children and held them to higher standards. Instead, we live in a society where saying "no" to a child is now considered scarring to them. If we had well-behaved students whose parents held them accountable, and teachers who followed union guidelines rather than going "above and beyond," teaching would be an EXCELLENT career with amazing benefits (union blue states).

@@infinitespiral6758 My husband did too. I'm not romanticizing it but rather saying that the true problem of why American teachers are worn is out because of a lack of discipline. The problem is, most teachers will never focus and acknowledge how the poor parenting and lack of discipline affects the classroom.

I stopped working at the schools in the early 2000’s so my era was another time. I was paraprofessional and specialized in students with high-functioning autism. There were so many conflicts because this was time when they were beginning to mainstream these students into regular classrooms. The teachers resented our presence and didn’t understand what I needed to do to help the children acclimate to the situation. I was successful and gifted with my trade but so many educators didn’t seem to have the patience to tolerate the behaviors of these students with special needs. I could. You teachers don’t get enough respect from parents. You don’t get enough support from your principals and your salary is an insult. I know your supplies come out of your paycheck. You give too much of yourselves and it’s too hazardous. At least it was becoming that way when I was in the middle of it. I felt impassioned doing what I was doing. I miss the children so much! I wish we as a society would value these roles enough to actually pay and support professionals instead of blaming them for struggling or trying to fill the field with unqualified people who could do some real harm to students/patients/clients. Yuck.

I hope to be like your 60 yr old colleague. Taking the plunge back into Ed so we’ll see how it goes. I’ll be in a healthier environment that’s less toxic so hopefully I’ll be able to tend to my mental health better. I’m organized and started out with a solid morning routine, but the toxicity at my last school just bled into my whole being and I lost that organization over time. Keeping my fingers crossed that being in a better environment will allow me to keep my energy and organization long term.

I love what you said about wanting time to develop other aspects of yourself. I left the classroom for the same reason. I was so exhausted after a work day I really didn’t feel like I had time to develop my own interests and skills outside of the school day. Now im learning and applying new skills. Teaching is such a selfless field I am happy to be able have time to pour into myself now!

I’m not going back. I missed the student engagement initially but that was short lived. And I missed the literary aspect of my classroom. But now I don’t know why I taught nearly 15 years. If anything I’d be out between yrs 3-5. Don’t get me wrong I enjoyed it but from a financial goal perspective, teaching ain’t it especially in my region. I have thought about returning to an adjunct role. But I’m not there yet. This is why teachers aren’t respected bc even leadership seemingly thinks anyone can do it. 🙄 Blessings and protection to all that are returning!

Great to see so many teachers in the comments with similar experiences. I'm a high school teacher for Deaf students. For last 10 years I've felt like I've had no life. I have small class sizes but I've had to create my own curriculum, differentiating lessons, materials, posters, sign language videos, etc. 7 days week. Plus dealing with students who don't care makes me feel like all that work is for nothing. Breakfast? Lunch? bathroom breaks? hanging out with friends? Dating? All foreign to me. And don't get me get started on all the weight I've gained since teaching 😡😤 I have a week of summer left, and I'm starting to feel the annual back to school anxiety 😬 i think the thing that's keeping me in this job is the health and retirement benefits... but i do want to see what else is out there for me. I don't want to be the single, old, grumpy teacher who lives with 10 cats 😖😖

So many people are pulling their kids from school in our area because the schools are so bad--the behaviors, political curriculum, et cetera. The homeschool community is growing and people are now teaching their own kids. Maybe this is the way things will change! I am so excited to start my first year of homeschooling for my two oldest children! I feel so bad foe the teachers though:(

Using the bathroom when you need it is such a luxury! I can now hold my pee for an hour. Not a skill that I should be proud of but so necessary. teaching requires so much patience and understanding of child psychology and just basic psychology of people and students. I don’t understand how people getting vocational certificates are going to be able to manage this. Teaching is also something that you get better at when you do more PD‘s will you take more courses over time. Let’s just see. I am leaving the profession after 18 years. I am just exhausted by the national level of disrespect. I am exhausted from being on 24/7 ten months a year. The only real break is summer break which I am so grateful for.

Honestly I'm still shocked when I found out that teachers are underpaid. I hear all the time how important education is all my life so when I was a student growing up, I thought teacher's salary is up there with doctor's salary because in my mind I thought "Well, if doctors are needed in society and gets paid a high salary, then teachers are needed so they must be paid nicely." Being underpaid and overworked is unfair for education. I hope that there will be a demand for salary increases. Surely this can't go on forever.

I'm a teacher and honestly there's a lot of us doing private tutoring. I teach a little online and do private tutoriing and I make decent money. I get to be very hands on with students and see that I am making a difference in a much less stressful environment. With the teacher shortage, the mass amounts of administrative work and other duties they keep piling on teachers and the lack of support (from both adminstration and parents), and little pay it's no wonder so many teachers are leaving.

In surprised that you have to have a college/university degree to be a teacher in the States. I know here in the UK, it's great for you if you do, you could probably start at a higher salary as well that way but there's also a few schemes here that can enable you to earn as you learn to become a teacher. You can start as a Teacher's Assistant and get funding to be a Higher Learning Teacher's Assistant - which means you can actually teach the class when the teacher is doing their planning time this not needing a substitute teacher. Then you're school can fund you to do your PGCE (I forget what that stands for now) and you can become a teacher at a school but I believe you have to experience at least a minimum of 2 very different types of school in order to then get your NQT (newly qualified teacher) which gives you your teachers number etc. So all-in-all I think it's a 3 to 4 year process. Or you can do a year or 2 degree I think. Or you can do the worst one I think especially as so far it's only rolled out for secondary/high school (grades 7-12, but you'd mostly be working with 7-10 as technically here - the UK- kids could leave school after grade 10). You are basically just thrown into a classroom to sink or swim, you will get a mentor but of course they can't be with you the whole time so you'll just have to deal with it. I think that's a 5/6 year process but you can be fast tracked if the school feels you're worth investing in. But I guess it will solidify super quickly if you actually really want to teach or not.

I changed my major from English (in pursuit of teaching) to nursing. I think nursing and education attracts the same kind of women, women who desire to help in something greater than themselves. I think allowing teachers to work at a well paid vocational level is beyond fair and as you gain more education such as a bachelor's or masters you earn more and get to teach at higher levels of learning. This is the nursing model and I think it should be treated similarly.

The underpayment of teachers is still so crazy to me! Y’all are teaching present and future generations of our country and y’all aren’t treated like so. How can y’all do the best work possible when you’re underpaid, undervalued, and overworked. Going through so much schooling to need to pick up a second or third job just to be comfortable with life. Y’all should be tiered up there with doctors like every other country.
