I had a video come up in my recommendations a few days ago that didn't do much to inspire confidence in the vehicle or the manufacturer. Previous reviews of the R1T have mentioned that the cargo tunnel is really solely designed for long items like fishing rods, long guns, golf clubs, etc. So yeah, don't put anything else in there because it'll flop around away from you. As for the vehicle itself, the R1S I know has the same drivetrain as the R1T, and is basically the take your family around town SUV version of the truck.

And a frunk!! Am I the only person who would gladly trade the frunk, which if you have a truck you aren’t used to having anyways, for having double the battery life? Is there a reason they can’t jam the whole front with batteries so maybe I can tow something more than 50 miles?
@AnarchyEngineer
@AnarchyEngineer Жыл бұрын
@@ryanhamstra49 It may be similar to a rocket (as in the more fuel you have - the heavier it is, so you need more fuel etc) where a frunk packed with batteries would end up weighing a huge amount, negating pretty much all benefits it would bring as the extra weight would lower your range etc. It would also make the vehicle nose-heavy so you'd have to have some sort of counterweight at the back, further reducing range otherwise your handling would be scuppered. There's also the cost as traditionally the biggest expense in any EV is the batteries.

Yay!!! An Alex car review!!! 18:34 Man, no doubt. I grew up in the rural midwestern United States where a truck was truly a utility vehicle people purchased to beat the hell out of it on the farm or in the woods. I don't understand why cul-du-sac warriors buy massive vehicles at all. I could see a large SUV/van if you're the Brady Bunch, but the vast majority of "city truck" owners never use them as intended.
@mcslender2965

And it's really ironic you'd even compare "coal rollers" when most trucks I see are gas not diesel on top of the fact this Rivian weighs over 7000 lbs. Nothing about this truck is really that green especially if your just going to lease it and get a new one in 3 years. Then its factually and proven to be worse than just buying a gas car

It's all just marketing and profit. Light trucks like modern pick up trucks and SUVs are easier and cheaper to manufacture (because they're not regulated and don't have to be as safe as normal passenger vehicles) but manufacturers can sell them for a higher price since they're big. Boom, massive profits. On the other hand, modern pick up trucks are so different to actual utility vehicles that they're basically useless for any sane amount of work (wrong bed dimensions, wrong suspension, they can't take a lot of heavy use...) and are ironically less safe than normal passenger cars despite being massive.

Rivian owner here, in the PNW. Having had it since Oct. '22, It took the winter pretty well. Didn't freeze over the charging port too badly, and if it did, a little coercing made it open. The only problematic thing was when we left it charging overnight, and when returning in the morning, the water from the night had frozen on/into the weatherstripping on the truck in the charging port door, which took a bit of scraping with a flathead screwdriver to get the door to close properly. Other than that, never had issues with the charge door or flush door handles for that matter during the winter.

This is a great truck: 1. Downsides for people doing "heavy trucking" which is code for "only people who actually use the truck as a truck" 2. If you want to go off road a 30 yo all-terrain vehicle (actually made for going off road) for a fraction of the price will give you more fun 3. In 5 years you probably will loose some basic functionality 4. In car reviews they used to have a section dedicated to the car's safety features. I wonder why this truck reviews don't? I'm sure it's not because trucks are less safe then cars, and don't even require the same safety standards as cars. 5. Whenever Alex mentions something the R1T is bad at, he'll then remind us that it's a truck, and for a truck that's not actually that bad. Most of truck drivers would fit everything they need in a car from a compact to a station wagon, and those cars would be better at the tasks you use them for. This means you're buying a truck that you don't use as a truck, and that's worse at being a car, but it's ok that it's worse because it's a truck, even if there's no reason you'd need a truck. 6. It's an EV, so it's sooo green, and enviromentally friendly. Let's just totally ignore the aspect of sustainability in the review. Let's just scrap that section just like the section on safety.

Which also makes it a PITA when you're driving because you can't see past this oversized vehicle that someone wants just to show off. Regarding the lack of Android Auto, I'm reminded of the criticism my older Mazda 3 got regarding the lack of a USB port for accessing music from an iPod/Phone. Yes, right now it might feel like a negative, but knowing Google's habit of graveyarding things, I'm not sure I'd put any more trust in the long-term availability of Android Auto than I would in Rivian's own software support.

Puh. A 100k truck that cost them 250+k to manufacturer better be reeeeaaally good, if you risk buying it while the company might not exist much longer to service it.
@Catsrules1
@Catsrules1 Жыл бұрын
I don't know if this is accurate but I heard that 250K number included alot of the upfront costs. Like RND costs. Basically they just subtracted the money earned from the money spent and divided it by how many trucks produced. Giving you that number. But that doesn't really tell us the actual cost in raw materials and man power per truck. It is like spending 30 billion on a car factory and producing a 30 cars from the factory. You could say each car costs 1 billion to make. It makes a good headline but doesn't accurately tell you how much each car costs to make. Because the next 30 cars produced will bring all car costs down to $500 million. But all of that said they are not profitable but I don't think it is as bad as loosing 100K per vehicle.
@NO3V
@NO3V Жыл бұрын
@@Catsrules1 Generally false. This number does NOT include R&D and other operational expenses (HR, Admin, IT, ..) - it's pure Gross loss = revenue minus cost of revenue (663M - 1,663M). Their opex losses in the last published quarter were an additional 795 Million dollars. (Which is also crazy high for a company of their size. They delivered 8054 vehicles that quarter - so some might say that would be an *additional 100k* of company wide cost per truck but _that_ would be contrary to your point.) But to your point: cost of revenue is indeed not just materials and labor. It also includes depreciation (but NOT like your 30B example which would be depreciated over just a single quarter) on buildings and machines. Which naturally reduces (per good sold) once you ramp production. But their huge losses there is why normal companies ( that don't get a Bezos or SPAC cash injection) start small..

Yeah, the removal of the 12V in the frunk has me rethinking my deposit. I have a 12V refrigerator that I currently have to keep in the rear passenger seat of my SUV on long trips to hold insulin (plus whatever leftovers I accumulate). The plan was to move that to the frunk and actually regain the rear seat for my daughter and dog. I test drove the R1S and liked it, but really need to be able to load motorcycles in the bed to help with the range hit of going to an EV (instead of towing) I honestly don't mind the trim, but removing functionality of this makes no sense to me. I am sure there is a cost savings somewhere. If I decide to go through with the purchase, then I will likely retrofit the 12V frunk plug. I would much rather have them lose the stupid bluetooth speaker/latern that is likely never going to get touched on 90% of the trucks out there and actually costs something to manufacture.

Unfortunately no modern pick up truck is a real utility vehicle. They're just terrible, heavy, oversized, unsafe, swollen passenger cars. Which is awful for everyone and everything - for people who actually need a utility vehicle, for the roads and cities, for pedestrians, for their own owners (both in terms of safety and fuel consumption)... For that kind of vehicle, the Rivian is pretty good, but it's not a good type of vehicle in and of itself. I'd like to see Rivian make a smaller car better suited for cities.

I wish they'd make an actual car. Trucks might work in North America, where traffic rarely is mixed (or at all), but in Europe, it's a huge issue. Look at how tall the bonnet is. Hitting a pedestrian or cyclist with that, and they're dead. Perhaps it's fine on stroads such as in North America, but in Europe where traffic is mostly mixed in towns, a truck is just silly. Now this brand has limited themselves to exclude Europe other than a niche (and a lot of the niche is covered by vans here). Especially here we could use another 'keep the germans on their toes'-brand. It's very ironic that the best German EV at the moment carries a Ford branding. Also, let's talk the elephant in the room: this thing probably has a kWh/100km that's way further than even most crossovers. Even though electricity has the advantage of no exhaust, and more efficiency than petrol, heck, even more hetrogenous charging: it still uses a lot of power. I really wish they'd have gone and made an electric V70, a hatchback, estate, or just: a saloon. Using a truck to go to/from work is just... silly!

Unless you are in a very rural area, driving a truck in Europe is very challenging. Even the parking spaces are small
@GuusKlaas
@GuusKlaas Жыл бұрын
@@jc74435 those have been standardised even to 2m30. Many cities are limiting or banning cars even these days, opting for free parking garages/areas outside of towns, or working with 'rough routes' or 'it's all open just very expensive' by nature. Pre-2004 (I think) parking spaces even were at most 2m15 but some side airbag stuff caused them to be like: yeah, let's widen it up. Honestly some older cities like The Hague even my Ioniq5 which is TINY compared to this beast sticks out of the space, can't open it's trunk, or on return another wide car (after all, I do park at charging spaces) is sitting next to me forcing me to either do the 'car remote'-thingy or make use of the "EV no center tunnel" thing and truffle-shuffle my arse in from the passenger seat. I swear, a truck basically is forced to double park, which for an EV is considered a very very d*ckish move considering they typically also are charging spaces.

Funny enough, with it's weight being about 3150kg empty, most people won't have the correct license to drive one of those in Europe anyways, unless Rivian let's their trucks being registered with 250kg of loading capacity which wouldn't even be 4 people.

Man, I am a bit conflicted about this subject. On the one hand, cool tech so absolutely belongs in this channel in that regard. On the other hand, most people who buy a truck like this, really don't need a truck like this. Which wouldn't really be an issue if not for the fact that these big cars are making roads less safe, consume more resources (both electricity and the amount of battery needed), etc. To be clear, the Rivian isn't as big as the Ford one so it is somewhat more reasonable.

So, why the hell would I buy this thing? If it's for status, as you lament at the end of the video, then any premium trim level from any "real" truck manufacturer will do the job. At that, with arguably less investment and without the inherent issues that come with the current iteration of electric vehicles. Hard pass.
