so the love triangle cardigan: from bettys perspective betty: from james perspective august: from unnamed girls perspective (referred to as august or augustine) betty and james were in a relationship but james cheated on her with the girl who sings august. inez, mentioned in the song betty, is the one who told betty about the affair. i think that should be enough for you to figure it out because it’s fun to find more details on how they connect on your own! anyone else feel free to comment on this.

Remember when I pulled up and said, "get in the car" and then canceled my plans just in case you'd call?" cardigan(betty pov): "I knew you'd miss me once the thrill expired And you'd be standin' in my front porch light.." betty(james pov): " I showed up at your party Will you have me? Will you love me? Will you kiss me on the porch in front of all your stupid friends?" "Standing in your cardigan, kissing in my car again, stopped at a streetlight..." taylor swift is a fucking genius
@mscxmsc3 жыл бұрын
And the icing on the cake: those matching lyrics happen at the same times in their songs. 2:47 for betty/august and 3:13 for betty/cardigan. And I don't think those time stamps are coincidental either.
@lovingherwasgay3 жыл бұрын
Also !!!!!! this is just a fan theory, BUT: The 1 is from the perspective of August! "rosé flowing with your chosen family" = "August sipped away like a bottle of wine". And in cardigan, Betty clarifies James lost "the one", which is herself. So August would sing "it would've been fun if you would've been the one/it would've been sweet if it could've been me" because she wasn't the one for James. Also "You weren't mine to lose". "In my defense I have none for never leaving well enough alone" = August singing over and over "remember when i pulled up and said get in the car..."

Took me a while to get mirrorball too, but now it’s one of my favorites. If you watch the Folklore long pond studio film she goes pretty in depth about the song and how it’s about disco balls reflect and are cut into so many pieces and it’s how she views fame that she has to show every version of herself to please others

Thank you for this! This albums lyricism was a welcomed return to the “old Taylor” that a lot of Swifties fell in love with and is the mainstay of TS 1-4. It’s also very present on 1989 with Clean and This Love, on REP with New Years Day and Lover’s Cornelia Street... I could go on and on. Once you know you know 😄 You’re not the first to express that opinion about mirrorball and I’m glad you did bc it was honest! I adore that song, especially because she wrote it (and cardigan) to and for us. Another observation I’ve made is that, in my experience, men really seem to relate to this is me trying. It took Blank Space’s spot for my bf’s fav song! Can’t wait for more ts reactions from your channel! 💛💛

But you’re one of the few taylor reactors I’ve found (alongside Ajay & Michael Beveraggi) who are open minded, actually lose themselves in the music, and give honest reviews without trying too hard or pretending to like something they don’t. The high school love triangle is made up of “Cardigan,” “August,” and “Betty.” Cardigan is written from the character Betty’s point of view about 20 years after the events of the song. She and James, the boy she’s singing about have gotten back together at this point (Taylor talked about it in the Long Pond Studio film on Disney+) and she’s reminiscing about that and how he makes her feel. August is written from the point of the girl who he had a summer fling with (her name is August according to Taylor) and how she honestly fell in love with him. Betty is written from James’s point of view after she learns he had the fling with August in the summer and he’s coming to apologize. Oh and the names Betty, James, and Inez are Blake Lively and Ryan Reynold’s kids. Taylor got permission from them to use the song Betty to reveal the name of their third child.

If you want even more detailed explanations for the whole album you should watch Folklore: the long pond studio sessions on Disney plus, which she and the co writers explain each song individually!
@divishagarwal12343 жыл бұрын
Explaination on the love triangle : We have three characters 'Betty' , 'James' and 'the other girl' Cardigan is from Betty's pov . It's about her reflecting back on her past and thinking about all the events that happened when she was younger . Betty is from James's pov . It's an apology because he cheated on betty with the other girl over the summer . August is from the other girl's pov . Originally we didn't have a name for her to symbolise that she's that forgotten girl in James's and Betty's story but in the long pond studio session Taylor revealed that she always thought that her name would be something like Augusta or Augustine . While her and James's relationship was only a summer thing to James ,she truly believed it could blossom into something more because she really did love him . Only to be disappointed in the end when James went back to Betty and she got left behind

Taylor is just magical when it comes to lyrics and painting such a clear picture. I love when people actually pay attention and see that! In regards to cardigan, august, and betty I feel it's best to just listen to them all in a row. Once you've listened a few times you'll be able to hear the parallels. One example is in august's bridge it goes "remember when I pulled up and said get in the car" and in betty's bridge it goes "she said James get in lets drive" both those are talking about the same moment. Also august is about a summer love/fling (on his part.. she fell deeper) "but I can see us lost in the memory, august slipped away into a moment in time, cause you were never mine" and betty starts at the beginning of school and he says "would you trust me if I told you it was just a summer fling" and "those days turned into nights slept next to her but I dreamt of you all summer long" and that shows you that the girl from august (Augustine) knew he was never truly her's and that he was thinking of someone else and that was Betty. There's obviously more you'll catch and some between them and cardigan as well.
