Sorry about having to remove all the lovely music and along with it, some of my reactions, but thanks for watching! My overall feeling? I really like the album overall, and am growing obsessed with about 4 different tracks that have been swirling in my head all day! (Bells in Santa Fe, Lilith, I am not a woman, I'm a god, and Whispers) What are your favorites right now?

I’m all about The Tradition. There’s something desperate but defiant about the sound that really pulls me in. It reminds me of Florence and the Machine in some ways - especially the bridge. Really great video, by the way! Your analyses are really cool. I like how you think.

Same because I don’t think it’s so much better to introduce younger kids to the best album I have memory of my teens and I have had a little hope to see them really interesting and learn about my favorite teen memories of the pretty hate machine in this generation and have been a little bit more intense lately about her music and Billie eillish but I feel like it’s my own favorite memories of the teen age memories I have had been thinking about today. She is just a little bit more rocking in her own music now she is definitely still intense but she is almost intense. It’s been a weird thing to say I was extremely intense in the past few days having my feelings and over obsession with the i am not a woman but a God song.

What makes me happy is this is the album that a lot of alternative fans just dreamed Halsey would make especially if their favorite album is Halsey's first, Badlands. The fact that it takes it a step beyond that is really satisfying. It's the most rock sound we've heard from her. My only critique is the production on the rockier songs. It sounds like all instruments are amplified in a box. It's very condensed but loud. There's other pop artists making similar distorted choices when they play with rock in their songs. If it's a trend at all, I hope it doesn't continue personally. I like when instruments are more clean and clear sounding even if they are heavy.

Yes, I love Easier Than Lying and that chorus is phenomenal, but the production makes it almost unlistenable unfortunately :( I don't feel this is as much of an issue with Honey though?

I love badlands, and I agree that the production isn't the best here. but I may think that they wanted to sound more synth/industrial with a low fi production. I definetely prefer the badlands production.

@@FabrizioChiruzziChannel I feel they could've achieved a more lo-fi sound without making some portions sound completely compressed and without depth, though. Just some poor decisions on Trent/Atticus' parts, which is unfortunate seeing as they were the main appeal for a lot of new fans.
@iximusic
@iximusic 3 жыл бұрын
I noticed that the mixing seemed to work against the song in Easier Than Lying and maybe a few others. In Easier Than Lying, the contrast between the very present, clear drum groove with the rimclicks and the full on smashy part, which was I don't know....muddy, soft, low energy? maybe wasn't the strongest choice. I would put this responsibility on the recording and mixing engineers more than the producers and Halsey.

I'm assuming Honey was with Dave Grohl and the country song was Lyndsay Buckingham. I really like the songs but I hear what you mean. They probably sounded too quite next to the Reznor Ross tracks so they compressed them.

Thank you for making my little pophead brain happy with this tonight. Also, as someone who was already a Halsey fan from her first album (and a lifelong NIN fan), this is a departure, yes. Of course as a huge Reznor fan I have a severe bias.

Love the comment about Halsey with NIN as her backing band 😂 This is by far my favorite work from Halsey, so after listening to this album twelve times I went back through previous releases to check if the NIN DNA was always there waiting to be brought out... And sure enough, it does feel like this album is where her music was always beautifully destined to evolve. She's an artist who's willing to take chances. That's very exciting.

From a production standpoint, I called this out as a reference album for all future work. It's just so solidly and evenly mixed, everything has it's place and it sounds amazing. I'm a big fan of the synth heavy tracks (Bells, 1121, Woman/God) but I agree that the ending of the Lighthouse is just transcendental, and I think Trent is doing backing vocals there. Easier than Lying is interesting because those power chords on guitar during the chorus are a rarely used progression, but they're so much fun to play (the final chord uses the A string as the base, but the low-E can be sloppily strummed and it still works). You called out a bunch of things that are very NIN-esque, but after the promotion, I think it's the little touches that really make this album. Not using drums on a bunch of songs. That little synth riff on the second half of the ending bridge for Woman/God (F# G# / F# G# G# F#). That Lighthouse outro with the laconically plucked acoustic guitar and the dreamy, oceanic vocals... yeah, it's a masterpiece.

As such a huge NIN fan and passing casual Halsey fan I loved this. Her track on the birds of prey soundtrack (margot robbie harley quinn movie) was great called experiment on me. This is another level though. NIN isnt what it was 20 years ago but the evolution Trent has taken through Ghosts and scoring films (Oscar winner for a Pixar movie lol) and now producing pop artists is so much fun and diverse. I loved the 3 eps as well but it's been 8 years since hesitation marks. I have a feeling the next NIN lp is gonna be epic. Fingers crossed for a year zero sequel called year 1

I've always liked Halsey, she wrote all of the lyrics and melodies, and then sent the vocal stems to Trent and Atticus so they could build all of the music around it. I love this album.

Obviously, I don’t know you, but I’ve watched (in admiration and awe) enough of your videos to have a sense; so that as soon as this popped up on my recommends just now, I was super keen to listen to your response - I thought you’d probably love it! Likewise, I’d never even heard of Halsey even just a few days ago, but on first listen to ‘I’m not a woman, I’m a God’ it blew my socks off harder than anything since I first heard the Fragile, what, 22 years ago!? The driving beat echoes ‘In Motion’ from the Social Network soundtrack for me. The Tradition (opener) is also phenomenal. Did anyone spot the Jungian archetypes in the (incredible) video? I’ve been studying and deciphering this all weekend (as well as ‘True’ - the guitar motive is totally mid-90s Bowie, I digress). As I commented on the main NIN faceache post to promote the album: “This coupled with the stuff TR/AR produced with Elfman, HEALTH and even Mike Garson at the beginning of the year (yes it was a live cut but hey) coupled with the (Soul & Mank) soundtracks - the walls of ‘NIN’ have become so vicious it’s just evolved into something incredible. Reznor et al and certainly Halsey (who I’d never even heard of a few days ago but exploring rapidly) are at an all-time peak of creativity imo - with Bowie Blackstar as the unifying guiding light”. p.s. nice plants!

I feel like I do love it, glad you loved it too! There are 4 tracks that have been in my head all day since I woke up, and I welcome their takeover of my brain!

@@iximusic it’s certainly got a lot more depth than I anticipated. Which 4 tracks? Tbh I’ve been looping joining the dots between I’m not a woman, I’m a God, True and the live take of Fantastic Voyage (W/ Mike Garson) as though it’s all flavours of a higher body of work/album - that may or may not make sense. Equally a very welcome takeover of my bonce, ha!

@@iximusic Been listening more today and it’s such grower - all of it. Which surprised me as on first glance it’s really not my usual cuppa! Pop!? I REALLY like Lilith (daang) and Whispers too. Regarding the descending/cascading scale on ‘I’m not a woman …’ I might be completely barking up the wrong tree, but objectively it sounds VERY similar (dif key) to that used by Trent in ‘I Can't Give Everything Away’ - which may subjectively tie together some of the thematic references, DNA of influences around life and death, maybe. All of this is temporary and open to interpretation ofc;) Probably just me over thinking it!

Halsey seems to be in love with dark sounds since badlands. The partnership with Trent is awesome, not all the tracks are catchy like as in badlands but there are at least 4 songs that I adore. Hope to hear Halsey more on a dark new wave sound with a bit of rock guitars and industrial.

i’ve been a fan of halsey and nine inch nails for a long time so this album was a very unexpected dream come true. that being said, i was underwhelmed by a little less than half of the album. my favorite tracks on the album are my favorite songs of theirs though. I do think they mixed in a very odd, unsettling, but beautiful way. but yes, i completely agree with everything you said, especially honey and you asked for this. doesn’t seem like they took as weird of risks as they said they would??

As a Halsey longtime listener, it’s definitely a new sound but overall it’s feels very much on brand for them. It still has Halsey’s lyrics and story telling and the sound is just new and fun to get used to.

I think what puts me off about pop music nowadays - and has been for more than a decade - is it often lacks creativity, daring and honesty. Thus I like it when pop artists embrace those things and work with other people who can help them in those areas.

The descending pattern in "I'm not a Woman I'm a God" sounds like it's micro tuned or not tempered. Or the chords synth are perfectly tuned and the descending pattern is tempered. I would love your feedback on this. 🖤
