This song is about bipolar dissorder where you go through manic episodes and depressive episodes. The dark amy vs light amy represents just that. Keep changing between manic and depressive. The song is called lithium because that is usually the medicine given to bipolar people because it help you feel numb. The former songwriter for evanescence Ben Moody suffered from bipolar so i think amy may have been inspired by him and his struggles when she wrote this song

I feel like this song is also about a bad relationship. She switches from light to dark constantly in the song, like a relationship that constantly shifts from being great to being terrible. One moment, you feel the partner is to blame ("Didn't drink enough to say you loved me"), and then start blaming yourself ("Wonder what's wrong with me"). Eventually, the fight for a healthy relationship becomes so much of a struggle that you give up the fight ("I forgive you after all"). Beautiful metaphor through the use of lithium in patients with bipolar disorder.
@courtneywhite84704 жыл бұрын
Ok. I basically agree with everything you said. Except your saying that lithium is a drug known for making whoever is on it, numb. I've been on lithium for God knows how many years, and never once did it make me feel numb. If it's being used correctly, it shouldn't! What it's supposed to do, is basically, even whoever is on it out. You know, whoever has bipolar disorder, and lithium works for them, you just feel back to normal

In addition to being "locked away" I had severely disturbing nightmares so realistic it took several hours to realize it WASN'T real. Lithium is used to treat depression, but (if you've been on anti-depressives) it has the ability to turn you into a zombie. The song is about conflict with her depression, one one side she needs to drug to function, but it suppresses her real state of mind. Lyrics like "Don't lock me up inside / don't want to forget how it feels / drown my will to fly / I want to stay in love with my sorrow, but god I want to let it go". The classic line, "wonder what's wrong with me" - I think if you've been there you'll understand these emotions and the sheer conflict. People often come off the drugs they are on in order to feel again "And in the end I guess I had to fall , always find my place among the ashes". I believe the lake is her entering that state when the drugs are drowning her. It's a beautiful song, tainted with the real agony of severe bi-polar / depression people genuinely suffer (note the razor blades in the opening scenes).
@AmyLeeForever5 жыл бұрын
Actually, it's a bit different how Amy explained to MTV Italy : It’s not literal about the drug for me, I’ve never taken lithium before. It’s sort of a metaphor about numbness and happiness and sort of like, it’s me looking at happiness in a negative way because I’ve always been kind of afraid to be happy. Like with the band and the art and everything else, it’s always like I’m never letting myself break through into the happiness it seems like, because it’s not cool or something. And describing happiness is lithium, it’s like saying ‘that’s numbness, I won’t be able to be an artist anymore if I’m happy,’ which is hilarious because that’s just not true, I’m happy. So it’s like this fight within the song of like ‘do I do this and get out of here and get happy or do I wallow in it like I always do?’ And it’s cool because at the end of the song I say ‘I’m going to let it go,’ like I am going to be happy.
@TheKansasfan15 жыл бұрын
The song isn't about her
@TheKansasfan15 жыл бұрын
@@AmyLeeForever I've heard amy say it is about lithium referring to somebody in her life. She's asking is it ok to remove the "mania, impulsivity, conquer the world" aspect that lithium addresses versus having those ups and downs like most. I've not taken it, but I would rather learn to manage the mania and depression and have them as human emotions even if not "normal ones" than be numb. That's just me. Zoloft did it to me amongst other bad things my girlfriend didnt like, lol! Not my president either!
@valeriea58544 жыл бұрын
So I always interpreted this song as like an unhealthy relationship with depression. Like you know it’s bad for you, you know you should try to get better but you’re comfortable in the darkness and that’s the only way you know yourself. You don’t want to forget how it feels without medication, you want to remember how depression feels because it’s who you are but god you just want to let it go so bad.

This song is about the effects of Lithium drugs taken for bipolar (and depression?). It makes you numb and unable to feel. Amy in the water is the one who has taken the lithium and feels numb and wants to get out, the Amy out in the snow is the one considering whether she would rather take the lithium or keep feeling so depressed. My family and friends have been on lithium before and it was heartbreaking to see them unable to feel. They felt like zombies: no pain, but no longer themselves and they couldn't even cry if they wanted.

I was on lithium and the experience was kind of like this song (apathy and emptiness). If I could have heard Amy Lee in my head the whole time I might have stayed on it.
@TheKansasfan15 жыл бұрын
See my explanation....exactly the same! I have not been on lithium but was placed on Zoloft and it numbed me....simplify your life, get out and excercise, meditate, and you'll be fine!
@jmwild15 жыл бұрын
@@TheKansasfan1 If only it was so simple. I've been dealing with MDD and anxiety for my whole life and have been in a slump for the last 2 years.

It's not so easy I know, the anxiety gets me more than anything. I wish you good health
@TheKansasfan15 жыл бұрын
@@jmwild1 just replied incorrectly, lol. I know it is hard. Anxiety gets me more than anything. If you try diet, exercise, meditation (a must, it changes the "wiring" in your brain), and of course therapy, you may find your symptoms may abate a bit. They did for me and others who suffer....its not perfect but I would say 50-70% better. Best of luck to you and good health. It's a short life make the most out of each day!

Whoops, the very next request (after yours) is also for Sweet Sacrifice, that makes 3 of them. Unfortunately Everybody's Fool is the frontrunner.

I personally think Alex trys to be fair about the different songs, and styles of music, and he does a pretty good job of it. IMO it was time for a song by Evanescence.

Amy is the ultimate goddess of rock music. The beautiful sweet & powerful quality of her voice, together with the hard rock music of her band make both a perfect match. Amy could sing a shopping list and it would sound just as amazing. She's just incredible.

This is my favourite song by Evanescence. It is so incredibly powerful in every single aspect - the music, the lyrics, the video, and of course Amy's vocals!! I can listen to this over and over and over again. For me, it will never get old. I don't understand at all, why anyone would dislike this song, how can you find fault in perfection?? Thank you Alex for doing this one!
