I have advice for the OP: 1. Lay low 2. Have a bf or friend around. The pounding on the door and the keys jangling is a bit alarming and while they haven’t threatened you physically I would try to steer clear as you never know what the neighbors might be capable of 3. A simple rubber door stop (the triangle wedge) pushed under your door from the inside when it is closed and you are on the inside can buy you a few seconds to get to a phone or baseball bat if they keep trying your door. Coming to the door with keys served multiple purposes including seeing if OP was home, checking to see if the key to the other unit would work on OP’s door, and giving a plausible excuse of “sorry, wrong apartment” if caught. The power drill worries me because if they didn’t use it to screw the couch to the patio to avoid suspicion as I can come up with many nefarious reasons to use it instead. On an even stranger note if OP can get a sample of the dirt/soil I would check to see if it is really soil or if not (read as could it be waste from a drug making operation or possibly cremated remains). Most high schools and colleges have microscopes which could be used to get a bit more information. Most far fetched explanation I have considered so far: did these people pull up floor boards using the power drill/screwdriver to bury those who received a compassionate death from them, then put the boards back down and hosted the excited dancing parties so people would literally be dancing on their grave? No matter the answer I hope OP is able to have peace in the near future.

OP is doing work for the attorney, landlord, and management. It’s great that they are documenting so much. Amongst other things, this is considered a “constructive eviction” and likely violates the lease terms. OP has a right to peaceful accommodations and a safe environment. Asking them to write a letter to the tenant was NOT the right advice. That is their job. IF that ceiling is compromised, the owners will be liable. If OP is in fear of their safety and well-being, the landlord/owners/manager have a duty to provide reasonable accommodations. OP needs to consult an attorney, and ask for temporary lodging, until the matter is resolved. If the owner is wise, they should have some kind of insurance (liability, property, and riders) to cover these kind of expenses.

At this point, they should also look at their local laws. Hopefully, there is a self-defense law in their area, and if so, buy a firearm. That recording reminds me of the time the couple who lived below my family at the start playing really loud music around 10 at night (we often could hardly hear ourselves think over their music). My mum had enough that day got my 8 year old self out of bed (was awake anyway due to music) we went in the living room with my aunt and cousins, turned the music up loud and jumped around for 10 minutes to piss off the couple. Their music went down and didn't get load again after 9 pm ever again. My mum did go to all other joining flats (apartments) the next day to apologise for the noise. They all found it funny because everyone was sick of the couple and thought it was a brilliant idea and said make sure you do it again if they take the piss. The happy birthday was just creepy.

Several Points of Advice for OP (long read): I have a cult in my town, and I participate in estatic dance. At the very least, in my experience, estatic dance is usually just... dancing. Like, having fun to music. When it gets "spiritual" is when I suspect drugs are involved which is a good reason to avoid your neighbor. She might be under the influence of something, and could be unpredictable. Not all drugs cause people to be violent or anything, but you have no idea what she could be on. Best to avoid confrontations and, really, conversations. Secondly, in regards to the cult-aspect, you need to stop engaging with them. At all. Stop texting them. Stop talking to them. But don't antagonize them, do not be rude, but try to use some tools from the Grey Rock method if you can. You may need to bite your tongue for things that are annoying you, but the alternative is to put yourself at risk. Additionally, it might not be a bad idea to invest in some basic recording devices in your house that you can use while away. One for audio, and a few for video. This way, you can still collect evidence while not putting yourself at risk for engaging with the neighbors. Ask your landlord if they would help you install them or if they would be okay with it in the first place. Thirdly, it sounds like they may have keys or were fiddling with your lock towards the end of the post. That is very scary. Put a door stopper- a rubber one or a heavier brick, in front of your door when you are inside. Always lock your door. This will give you more time to prepare if someone is at your door. While generally I would advice not staying in a place that is at risk of being broken into, if you don't have someone else to stay with, I would suggest making several hiding places. Try to make them comfortable for yourself- a pillow or a blanket and a bottle of water. This can be a bathroom, a closet, or a large cabinet if you are frightened. _Always_ have your phone on you and charged. If you do hear someone at the door who is not knocking or may be fiddling with your door: - Do not engage if you hear anything suspicious and _find one of your places to hide._ - _Use your phone to call for help_ the second you feel unsafe. - _Turn the phone volume down as much as you can (your ringer too), and speak quietly into it._ Explain your concerns without playing the situation down- that someone may be trying to get into your house or is testing your keys and you feel unsafe. Your choice whether you call the police or your landlord. - Begin recording if you have a phone that can both call and record at the same time. Your eyewitness testimony definitely is useful, but what is more rock-solid is a recording of someone trying to get into your house or people trying to crack your ceiling. If someone does make it into your house or the ceiling gets much worse, you should ask a friend or a family member to stay at their place temporarily if you can. With your recordings and an explanation, I don't see why they'd turn you down. Heck, I'd even say to do that preemptively, but it all depends on your situation. Have a small bag of essentials to take with you at a moments' notice. Google Go Bag for a basic list. Make sure you have any medications and an extra phone charger in there in case you need to leave quickly. Good luck OP, stay safe and stay away from your neighbors.

If I may add, don't use disposable water bottles like what you buy full at gas stations. Those are LOUD. Get one or two cheap reusable ones, maybe whatever dollar store equivalent you have in your area, that you can open almost soundlessly if you need to. Have at least 2 hiding spots if possible, maybe see if you can put up a nondescript false wall in the closet or fake cupboards under your bed and get a small light you can use if you're sure you're alone and have to be in there until whoever you called as back up arrives. Don't use the light if you think someone is still in the apartment, and a red light would help avoid blinding you if you had to use it. If possible, stash a portable charger and power pack for your phone so you don't need to worry about the battery life. Good luck and be safe!

@@SilverStar985 Very smart advice regarding the water bottle. Not everyone has the resources for a false wall, nor might they have permission of the landlord. This is an apartment, after all. Honestly, I think it's best for Op to look for new living arrangements or staying with a friend for awhile because I don't think it will be safe for her to be around for when everything comes to a head. I don't want to scare her or anything, but it's incredibly concerning how from the very start they purposefully stalk her out until they can talk to her alone. My advice to her: 1. Like many others said, lay low. If possible, keep friends, boyfriend, and family in the loop and stay with them if possible. 2. Do not, under any circumstances, engage with them more than you already have. If you come home and notice them pulling the same creepy move of waiting for you outside of the apartment, turn around and leave. Sit in your car if you have to but I think it's best to call someone to walk you to your apartment. It's worrying how she seemed to wait until you had your door opened. 3. If you are in the financial situation that will allow it, I think it's just best to start look for a new apartment altogether. This doesn't sound worth it to stick around even after they've been kicked if that's the path that the management is aiming to take. They could potentially retaliate out of anger since they already know you're involved. I really hope things go smoothly and without any further issues out of these two, but please, stay safe and take care.

I recommend calling the police, and taking copies of the police report to the landlord. If the landlord objects to letting op out of the lease, get a lawyer to write a letter to the landlord, using the police reports as evidence to push the issue. The part where OP says how the couple followed her to her door and waited as she unlocked it. Please, please do not do that again. They could wait for you to unlock door and go in after you. At least in the hallway people might better here if you shouted for help. Stay safe.

This story reminds me a lot about my mother's former upstairs neighbor. He used to bang bongos every night from 8-10pm. They were loud but not overly disturbing. They were a bit annoying but my mother never complained. Finally one day, the man came up to her and apologized then asked if the noise bothered her. She told him it didn't but he agreed to keep it down. That's what a sane, rational person does when this situation arises. By the way, he was true to his word and after that, they weren't as loud. He sadly moved away and now my mother has a group of girls who live above her and who jump around like its the Olympics.

Advise: check with your mgt group and get them to move you. You may need a lawyer to help get this done, but that ceiling looks to have structural damage. Possibly suggest that if that ceiling comes down on you, they may be looking at a whole other legal problem. That alone should get you to a safer apt away from the crazies. Then mgt can put recording devices in your old apt and get their own evidence instead of involving you.

I only have one question, why haven’t she called the police? They would have made reports to back her up so she could sue the neighbors or at least had a paper trail and a few complaint numbers to follow up with her paperwork for management. Wishing you all the best.

Honestly this sounds like a 'make sure contractors deal with the damage/eviction is in-progress and hide in a hotel or with friends for the meantime' situation. Between the stalking and the threat of ceiling collapse, OP's place isn't safe. Also carry pepper spray/an easily pressed alarm horn for a bit.

They've got to be breaking rules in the lease, and if they are, that's terms for eviction. Unfortunately, it can take a long time to legally evict a tenant. The building manager/owners have to get their ducks in a row. It helps to give them really good evidence, times, dates, length of time of each infraction. Write it all like a journal with video and audio evidence to back up anything you write about. Living in an apartment can be the worst sometimes. I don't know how these people can move into an apartment, do these crazy rituals and events and think no one is going to complain about it. This is something you do way out in the country some where, where you're not bothering neighbors. I've had some nutters living above me some times too, one of them were particularly bad! Some have been no real problem at all.

As for advice, I guaran-damn-tee you these parties have a cover charge. Get ahold of a friend who has not visited you and they won't know to "infiltrate" and prove these folks upstairs are essentially running a business your apartment isn't zoned for, then tell your landlord you plan to get the city involved.

I reeeeeeeeeally wish this had updates Also OP needs to look into what kind of weapons civilians are allowed to own in their area, then get at least 3 and start carrying them everywhere/in their bag/have one by the door Some kind of security camera watching the front door (from the inside, so if the neighbor ambushes her again) might also be a good idea >>;;;
@BitterSimplicity
@BitterSimplicity Жыл бұрын
Temporary deadbolt, some kind of security camera, and suggest getting the dirt and sludge forensically tested. This is freaky. Also see if you can get the complex to swing you a hotel room until the ceiling is fixed, this seems like a major hazard waiting to happen. Also, get an airtag or something similar. Keep it on you and give someone you trust access to the location, just in case. Don't outright ignore texts from the neighbor, but don't initiate conversation and gray rock in your responses to avoid antagonizing her directly.

I honestly hope the OP is doing their best to stay safe. Would the management be okay with ring door bells being installed after this incident as well as security camera's? It's a way to ensure not only the safety of the tenants but also ensure they have evidence of any damages that these peanut factory rejects are causing. I also hope that OP is being accomendated on with their rent/ living arrangements. It's absolutely horrid to have people doing this kind of stuff and blantantly not care for the damage. I also hope the OP's being allowed people to stay with them for the time being to ensure they feel safe. I'd reccomend dash cams both front and rear ones perferrable ones with audio as well as indoor recording for security and safety. Stay on top of the documentation and if you don't feel safe call a friend/Bf over so you have more than your own point of view on this. Finally I feel so sorry for the OP having to go through this. Here's to there being a wonderful update in the future.

I don't know any legal things but for physical safety. 1. Look into hotel door locks and window alarms. The hotel types of door lock will be inside the house and make you feel safer in your home. Extra window locks/alarms will do the same. 2. Think about storing valubles and id elsewhere just in case possibly in a safe if it has to be in house put a tracker in the safe if its one they can just pick up and walk away with. 3. Lock down socials never tell them where you work 4. Inform your workplace of a possible stalker so they don't give any info out about you 5. When going into/leaving the house have a friend/partner on the line but not talking listen to your surroundings maybe say something here and there so they know your talking to someone 6. Look at stalking forms they will have better info and more suited for you specifically I know this is scary but do your best to protect yourself and keep your sanity. Cults are fucking terrifing and the more that they are focused on your landlord the safer you are. Also turn off Bluetooth on everything they can use that to see if you are home or not.

Please tell me they have a ring doorbell! That will capture activity outside their door so they’re not caught unaware & any harassment-like the door pounding. Also, if you can’t get someone to stay home with you, please try to stay somewhere else for at least a few days (preferably with your ring installed).

The fact that they keep lying, trying to cover up whatever their doing is very suspicious. They even kept doing whatever their doing and pretty sure they've been trying to intimidate and get her to stop when THEIR causing all this investigation in the first place. They have no one to blame but themselves once they get evicted.

Holly molly that is a wild story! I can't believe that these people started a cult in an apartment. There's not much advice I can give besides don't act overly hostile or rude to your neighbor. Cult members and leaders are not sane people. She may be trying to convert you as well. Avoid her as much as you can. She is a dangerous person and I'd hate to see OP get hurt. Best of luck to you and stay strong. Don't be afraid to leave for a few days if you get scared. Stay safe!

OP shouldn’t have had to do all the legwork and confront her neighbor. The best part of renting is being able to make management deal with it; so you don’t have to directly confront neighbors and fear escalation or retaliation or just plain awkwardness of having to see those people after confronting them.

OP needs to get security cameras to record everything that is happening in the apartment, keep a record of when the loud music and dancing and how long it goes on for. Document the stalking tricks to report to the police. If the building manager doesn't do anything send the photo evidence to whoever enforces building codes. If there's danger of the ceiling collapsing code enforcement should know about it.

No advice OP, just empathy. My upstairs neighbor is nowhere near as bad, but he slams his bed or smth on the floor randomly in the middle of the night, sometimes multiple times and for days in a row (once causing the ceiling light cover to shatter over me and my 7 month old during morning snuggles), screamed at my husband for a phone convo he was having, and stomped above my sons crib when he was an infant. Plus we can hear him pee. Hopefully we both get better upstairs neighbors soon
