Michline Al - I hear ya. What’s funny about my wife is provided she doesn’t see it delivered, she’ll never even notice it’s on my wrist. I’m lucky in a way because when we first got married, her parents had sadly passed away, so with her inheritance she wanted our finances to be separate. After about 20yrs of marriage she ‘suggested’ combining them and I politely declined...and told her she can order anything she pleases from amazon or wherever, and I can do the same. That said, she freaks if she knows I blow $$$ on watches or get a new car..go figure!

I work with someone who owns a Rolex . I seen him wearing it and I complimented him on it. He said, "I was young and stupid. I was in love with Rolex, and I wanted one in the worst way, and that's how I got one. In the worst way.' Someone was selling one. The owner said "I'm letting it go, because it was his father's. It had to many bad feelings with the watch. Sure, It needed a little work, but that wouldn't be hard. So he was going to let it go cheap." So, he buys it, and it stopped working the next day. He took it to a watch maker, and he said, "You were cheated." He got it running, but it lost twenty minutes everyday. After six months, he noticed how bad the watch was. It was constantly in the shop. He went to better watch maker, and he said it's not fixable, well not fixable by him." He put a Seikio movement in it, and it's fine now.

Satoshi Nakamoto I just wanted a durable watch to replace my Omega Seamaster that took a very serious hit in 1971. My choice was a 1680 (red letter) that set me back a whopping $136.00. Yes! It’s still original, with box, anchor, sticker, everything it shipped with. Since new it’s endured ALL of my dirt bike AND road racing, 12+ years of jetsking, auto racing, all while I worked 2 separate careers, one involving all aspects of the motorcycle/power products industry followed by 27 years of government service as a stationary engineer. The watch has probably spent more time in both fresh and seawater than 90% of all the subs ever made, not to mention various oils, cleaners and other chemicals that I found myself around or covered with. Yep, I still wear and enjoy it everyday! It’s coming up on its 50th birthday very soon. My dilemma is to whom is it going to next? All I can say, “Satoshi”, is mine has always been a working watch, will continue to be a working watch, it’s just never been anything else. And don’t forget, YMMV!

Cool, I wear my watches and if they get scratched that is the way it goes. Even though I'm somewhat younger I still wear my Sea Dweller doing yard work, working on my cars etc. I still believe in the old school Rolex. But with that said I purchased two brand new 16610 LV 50th anniversary watches in 03 through a friend who worked at an AD I paid under 10K for both now the list price for a new sub is about that. I gave one of the LV's to my father and I have mine in the safe deposit and we both agreed that the all black is way better than the LV. Point is at this rate of price increases a sub will be 20K in 15-20 years and I don't see people paying that kind of money turning a new sub into a beater.

They are tool watches (and damn good ones), but somewhere along the way, people started paying high end horology prices from them. It's basically wrong. And now Rolex are playing artificial scarcity games to further inflate the price bubble. Good that you're seeing through the hype.

Richard Northwood there is no evidence that Rolex is involved in artificial scarcity games. And Rolex pre-owned prices were very good even 3-4 years ago when sports models were relatively plentiful. If it were a price bubble we’d have seen a correction over the years, which hasn’t happened.

Rolexs predicament has been known for many years. Just because a correction hasn't happened, it doesn't mean that people aren't paying excessive amounts for something. @@sirbuftontufton5846 I think this is a perfect storm - the luxury watch market went through a mini recession after the Chinese anti-corruption push. I have a 1983 Rolex Sea Dweller that was $1100. new. Now 36 years later it has only required servicing twice. Once for $500 and more recently for $1500. Back from that last service, it looks brand new, case polished, new bezel, crystal, crown, tube, stem, etc, guts cleaned and lubed, self winding fixed and reregulated to -1 sec per day. I'm in love again. So not a bad investment over 36 years.

I agree with everything in this video. Being in the 99%, I wonder how long it would take for me get over the fact that I spent so much ($10k here in the U.S. on the grey market) on a single watch. True, it is a brilliant watch. I guess I'd be spend many nights wondering about that decision. Even if I made more money, I couldn't justify pulling the trigger on one. And, I can justify a lot of things in my mind.

Listen, everything is relative. If you are someone who would have to lie awake at night pondering the decision, then the answer is that it is not the watch for you. Having spent my career owning businesses, I rode the roller coaster my whole life. During periods when money is rolling in nicely, you don't lose one wink of sleep over the coming or going of 10 or 20 grand. THAT is when you are the target market for Rolex. Conversely, during lean times...you have a lot better uses for 10 or 20 grand and then...you are NOT Rolex' target market. Some people spend their entire lives on one side or the other. I was not one of those people, so I understand both sides. This is why I can report that the old adage is true: "If you have to ask..." That is no insult, as I have had to tell myself "no" during lean times, throughout my career.

I am really into watches but so glad that I have never been impressed with Rolex watches. I know they are great watches, have good resale value, etc. but personally find their new models uninspiring they don’t wow me at all. Plus as mentioned in the video the older models are just as expensive and i am not into vintage watches as it’s tough to know what you are getting or if they have been properly serviced, not for me at all. I was shocked to see how plain the back of the watch was, I would have expected a double dome sapphire display back or at a very minimum some intricately etched Rolex crown and logo but nope. Looking at the plain case back my first impression would be is this even real? Overall IMO the cost is just way too high for such a plain watch. Plus I agree the slab design is not appealing. I have an Orient Ray II automatic diver that looks so much like this watch but IMO actually looks nicer. My Orient has a better looking dark shiny blue face, a nicer looking bracelet, a nicer looking bezel, and the crown is better protected. Plus it has a day/date complication. Sure the movement and materials are not as good as the Rolex but they are still very nice especially considering the Orient Ray II comes in under $200 and I got it right from the Orient website no waiting list. So why would i pay several thousands more for a more boring, no day/date diver watch that i would probably need to insure and pay more to have serviced.

To be fair, Rolex makes the plain back so it can be gift-engraved, but at the price point I really feel they should have a decorative back and include a matching serialized plain back for engraving, probably costs them $5 to make even in 904L. I think you can get aftermarket rear sapphire case backs to show off that 3135, the catch is AD service won't reseal the case with them- shrug.

Jody, I finally wanted to address the clasp issue. Professionally I am a machinist and mechanical designer. I also on the side make my own watches. Your bias against the folded stainless steel clasp is somewhat valid yet not full understood, I believe. As a machinist, I appreciate the machining it takes to get that precise and intricate Rolex clasp. The problem is the metal they use. A machined clasp is most likely softer than a folded clasp base on the hardness of sheet. My basis for this is from a former older machinist who was machining a block of stainless, probable 304, plenty of chromium. I asked him why I was always having problems with stainless. He asked me what I was cutting. I replied that it was sheet. His response was that rolled sheet is work hardened in the manufacturing. Once the sheet is formed to shape it is once again work hardened. I know this for a fact as the sheet will test a normal high speed steel bit. I also like the minimalism that a folded clasp gives.

If you like the Explorer or Air King - take a look at the Oyster Perpetual. Especially in the 36mm version it is for me nearly the perfect watch... That said, I couldn’t justify the price upgrade to a Sinn 556 . So I could say I would never buy any Rolex - not why I don’t like them, but because I couldn’t justify the Rolex price tag. Maybe I go some day for a vintage Oyster Precision which is still an underrated model...

Besides the obvious price issue, there are three points: 1) if there is a rotating bezel, it must be fully marked, otherwise it's next to useless; 2) Rolex, Shmolex or whatever - if it's a dive or field style watch, both of its second *and* minute hands must reach minute markers; 3) good modern automatic movements (like Orient's F6 platform, for instance) can be regulated to hold the same ±2 spd and even better accuracy even in the 24/7 wearing mode, moreover, it can (relatively) easily be done at home even with a software timegrapher. Although, if I had some money to throw away on a Rolex, I'd rather buy one of the new Citizen Chronomasters or Casio MRG. Or even both of them. In titanium, of course.

Good video. Bought my Date Sub in Cannes, France in 1994 for $2,700 USD and it is still on my wrist and worth over $7,000 now. No scratches and the bracelet is functioning, if a bit looser then original. FYI: I have also owned a couple of Omega Seamasters as well and found them to be far less hardy. Nothing beats the Submariner.

Couldn’t agree more Jody. A few years back before things went nuts in the market I went into a dealer to buy a 114060 Sub. I walked out with a 14060M instead. The Glidelock is nice buuuut otherwise I find the older Subs much more elegant (even the aluminum bezel, the ceramic bezel is simply too shiny to my eyes-another page Rolex could stand to take out of Omega’s book IMO).

Love my Sub - a 2003 16610. While I understand the case proportions of the newer models aren't everyone's cup of tea, my biggest complaint about them is the dial lettering. The font of the old lettering looks so much better to my mind. The new style - whisper it - looks clunky and unrefined; almost like a fake.
