Business scams are a real thing. Sometimes intentional and sometimes not. Con artists are out there and disguised in plain sight as friends. That's what happened to me. I was scammed out of over $22,700 by a con man and his wife pretending to be my friend. This is the short version of my story (yes I know it's a long video LOL) and some red flags you can watch out for if you are ever considering doing business with anyone.

Business relationships are akin to a marriage... those that work well are awesome, those that don't end in a nasty divorce... with mortal enemies. I have a couple business partners that we've shared multiple ventures with over the last 40 years, as well as a couple I would never enter a business relationship with again. Being honest, understanding each other's roles, strengths and weaknesses, ability, and TIME INVESTMENTS are vital to longevity. Not each and every business venture CAN WORK well, but most good ones CAN WITH EFFORT.

Yep, my husband has a business partner who was one of his good friends that he now hates. And they’re totally enmeshed together in this business, so he can’t get away from him. He comes home stressed out every single evening telling me all of the horrible and passive aggressive things this guy said and did all day. I’ve wondered what this guy goes home and tells his loved ones about what my husband is doing to him. If this were any other kind of relationship I’d beg him to just get rid of this guy from his life and never look back. But he can’t in this situation because the guy and he are completely financially tied together, and neither can afford to buy the other off. Be very careful who you go into business with, even more so than who you dare.

YES! I’m always leery of people that are 30+ years old, but don’t have ANY long term friends. I can see if they’re new in town, but they should have friends from back home or from a previous place that they lived. If they don’t then they have either picked bad friends in the past (they have bad judgement) or they were the bad friend. Some people aren’t very outgoing and keep to themselves, but you can easily see that and they probably won’t be trying to befriend you anyway.

As Robert Ringer taught in his books, there are three kinds of people you deal with in business: the ones who tell you they're going to screw you, the ones who lie and say they're NOT going to screw you (but do), and the people who never mean to screw you but do. The last category is always the one that screws you the worst.

I disagree with the split arrangement because in this situation you are to principal they are the agent. Thats split is not fair on your end because as the principal you still have your overhead cost and storage cost. You would of treated them as wholesalers and given them the 40% discount and have them run their business off that. But those items would be been sold by your direct local customers that would increase local brand loyalty and awaerness on deals. They took from the Lions share without participating in the actual merchandise sourcing, or paying to keep the lights on.

Not all Mom’s are created equal. My Mom had zero people radar, and pushed me and my other siblings into weird situations with her bad advice. She herself got all Stockholm Syndromy with a very unscrupulous extended relative who took over her life and convinced her to make a lot of bad choices, such as getting a reverse mortgage. Nobody could tell my Mom anything to dissuade her from not worshiping this person who she saw as “so competent.” Competent = large ego. I could go on, but I just wanted to put my two cents in. Almost every time I allowed myself to be pushed into taking my Moms advice it went very badly.

60/40 cut is not the problem. The problem is skimming the best from your inventory. If you were selecting what to show them, then no matter how the profits or losses came out, I would not call it a scam. You lost the ability to shift goods you bought into different hopefully profitable streams.

Ya know the other maddening thing it's not just the dollars lost here - how many hours did you spend ruminating, thinking, crying, talking it through w/ others, and worrying over how to reconcile this matter? How many sleepless nights? Those are lost hours that could have been spent making money, growing the business, or being with family. And that stuff really messes up our nervous system, affecting our physical & mental health. I do believe there is always a reason or bigger purpose that we go through this stuff. Sharing it was very brave & will absolutely help others. And you're right. bragging is a sure sign of insecurity - confidence is silent.

Contracts are always key to an endeavor like this and in the future when you write such contract make sure to have a "personal guarantee clause" - basically it protects against them claiming bankruptcy and walking away from a business deal scott free, they are personally guaranteeing the money owed despite any claim of bankruptcy or loss of business.

So sad that has happened, they took advantage of your goodwill and good intentions. Their method of doing business will get them in the long run. What many do not understand is that overhead is a big factor, also having employees. You can have money rolling in, but with all of those factors, the money shrinks quickly. Buying a new car while in debt speaks volumes about their mode of operation, mindset and it won't bode well in the long run.
