YES! I’m always leery of people that are 30+ years old, but don’t have ANY long term friends. I can see if they’re new in town, but they should have friends from back home or from a previous place that they lived. If they don’t then they have either picked bad friends in the past (they have bad judgement) or they were the bad friend. Some people aren’t very outgoing and keep to themselves, but you can easily see that and they probably won’t be trying to befriend you anyway.

He comes home stressed out every single evening telling me all of the horrible and passive aggressive things this guy said and did all day. I’ve wondered what this guy goes home and tells his loved ones about what my husband is doing to him. If this were any other kind of relationship I’d beg him to just get rid of this guy from his life and never look back. But he can’t in this situation because the guy and he are completely financially tied together, and neither can afford to buy the other off. Be very careful who you go into business with, even more so than who you dare.

The last category is always the one that screws you the worst.

I saw the "con" immediately at the sale of that IPAD. NEVER mix friendships and business. Keep the two separate. So sorry you got baited and conned. Life's lessons are meant to teach us...unfortunately, it comes with either financial, mental and emotional anguish. These people who do this are predators and they will reap what they sow.

I honestly think that you should have never ever opened a storefront. No offense but from the Landlord to these people you were better off selling on EBay without the hassles of crap like this

Omg excellent story teller, at times looked like you were fighting back tears…😢 kept me intrigued throughout your ordeal, and trust me, I am not a business person at all. I am a pilot. Keep on keeping on. Kev.👍

Sorry this happened. I admire you being such an honest hard worker and business person. Working with others is always difficult! That’s why I like being antisocial. I wouldn’t have the courage to fight back like you have. Apparently they will never make it in life because they are not honest and manipulative. It’s probably not the first time they did something like this. Won’t be the last.

If you get a judgment against them, I believe you can file a lien against their house, car, or any other item that has value so if they sell it you get paid first. Truly a learning experience and a horrible learning experience. I hope you can get repaid but those two scumbags are the worse of humankind to do this to someone like you. I appreciate all the information you share and you have helped me greatly with my reselling adventure.

That's awful. But honestly, a red flag to me are people who want to be fast friends. Asking you to be in their wedding was weird. And I would have immediately cut ties when payments stopped being made.

Moms rock! My mom was only wrong once about a person she met. She was spot on about everyone else. I'm so sorry you had to go through this, but you seem to have a great attitude about what happened and that you have moved on in a positive manner. Congratulations to you, you are a much bigger and better person than most.

Unfortunately some of the best and biggest lessons in business and in life are the hardest ones to overcome. It seems like you've gained some clarity on the situation and are taking action to reclaim what's owed. I hope you at least get something back from them if not everything .

Contracts are always key to an endeavor like this and in the future when you write such contract make sure to have a "personal guarantee clause" - basically it protects against them claiming bankruptcy and walking away from a business deal scott free, they are personally guaranteeing the money owed despite any claim of bankruptcy or loss of business.

So sad that has happened, they took advantage of your goodwill and good intentions. Their method of doing business will get them in the long run. What many do not understand is that overhead is a big factor, also having employees. You can have money rolling in, but with all of those factors, the money shrinks quickly. Buying a new car while in debt speaks volumes about their mode of operation, mindset and it won't bode well in the long run.

Partners are the death of the dream. My husband’s best friend “partner” worked in our service business out on the road. My husband manned the office and bids, etc. Well, the partner decided to tell the customers how bad he was treated (not) and then made his own company. The customers went with him. He was a charmer. It took us so long to get back on our feet since he skimmed all the cream off the top. Had to remortgage our home to keep afloat. We never talked to him again and that was in the early 90s. Very hard lesson.

When they moved in the profit split should have gone to 60/40 in the other direction, since you have all the overhead. (among other things)

I think one of the weaknesses of being a female entrepreneur is that you can be emotionally persuaded to make bad financial and business decisions based how someone is making you feel through flattery and kindness, offen the critically thinking mind and ability to question situations and have foresight of people's motives....a trait that males have... are absent and as a result lead to financial ruin.

Sweetie it's not brilliant. That's called slimy. Should have been a huge red flag. There selling stuff they don't even own. What if you didn't sell it to them?
@getreadywithme-v3l10 ай бұрын
So sorry this happened to you Lindey. I agree with you 100%. They are narcissists and you were their target from the beginning. They come across as so attractive, successful and appealing at first. They love bomb and make you feel like you are so lucky to have them in your life as a friend or business partner. Things are going so well at first and you feel on top of the world. Then, the orchestrated drama starts unfolding and everything starts crashing. You wind up getting the short end of the stick and losing the most. They never even try to make it right and cast you aside when you no longer serve their purpose. That's OK though because they will never really gain much, especially after doing people so wrong. I know this from experience.

Were they paying you rent at your store? Otherwise, their whole business was based off of a free workspace and free product. They were paying their employees with your money, and keeping 100% of the profits as well as cost. Minus what they did pay you. That is very shitty! They are either con artists, or very bad friends, that are not disciplined enough to pay their bills, because they like to spend money.. I don’t know, sorry this happened to you though! My mom says the same thing about friends. She was very good at calling out who was going to cause trouble!

The exaggeraters... those are indeed red flags. When u get that lil intuitive nudge that tells u someone's words prolly dont align with reality... question it. Truth doesn't mind being questioned; lies hate to be challenged.

Business and friendships never go well with each other. Also late age friendships are only skin deep. But critically, business thrives because of daily tough decisions and friendships dilute that ability to be firm and decisive. I value the lessons on red flags at the end.

I think we're all learning more than we want to know about con-men. I could be wrong, but it seems like people who are "good with money" are also good at manipulating money and people to their own profit. And you're right-- it wouldn't have hurt THIS much, if you hadn't started to think of them as friends.

Take them to small claims court. You can’t get the full amount owed, but you can get a judgement up to the maximum limit without all the legal fees. And I wish everyone had your mom to play gatekeeper on human relationships.
