I'm glad you speak the truth about everything. I have spent / lived 9 X 20 to 26 weeks or (9 X winters) in Thailand myself. When I saw the title of ; 20 Things I Hate About Thailand, I thought: "how can there be 20 things to hat?" So I watched it to see what can be so bad about Thailand to actually have 20 rants, well to my amazement all 20, even 21 things you brought up I agreed with from 80% to 100%. But all in all being there, and especially once you know the ropes, the scams, and know how to please the people it is a great place to be. Although I tend to just leave for surrounding countries for 6 to 15 days before I blow my top about the local annoyances, but no matter whether I go to Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Myanmar I find they all have things that just as annoying, but different. Then I want to go home (Thailand) again to forget my peeves for those other places. One thing that annoys me that might need some mentioning to your followers is all these weekly changes of rules, laws etc. It seems like their is always a reason that pops up without our knowing of it to bars are closed today, oh it's the king's birthday, so no alcohol anywhere, banks are closed, and you must wear yellow, or today is Buddha day (again?) so no booz. I even remember one day (I forget why) but that day I was leaving my apt. and care taker saw me leaving and ran up to me saying I could not wear that red T-shirt, nor a yellow one, that being farang I should wear white, because today was some political event that was confronting yellow shirts (king) & red shirts (government) and that by not being local, I should for my own safety not bee seen getting involved with local issues. I just wish visitors could get an English calendar with all these events listed it should include songkran, chinese new-year, etc. A description of thevteadition, what is expected of you on those days. In norther Thailand they have a smaller version of a teadidition I first saw in Vietnam, it is held in late October, it is a day where one is expected to offer a flower to every girl you know that come accros today. Any enough now. Love your channel, good luck, and hope to see more of your videos. Pierre, from Montreal.

Another annoying thing is the lack of garbage cans or trash bins on the streets. Many a time I find myself walking with an empty water bottle or empty plastic bag looking for somewhere to dispose of without just putting it under a street corner.

Thanks for the video Peter, I enjoyed it. The scams in Thailand annoy me too. A mate and I got done with a fast meter scam in bangkok going from Don Muang airport to Suvarnabhumi airport. When we got into the cab we confirmed that it was a meter taxi and then the driver wanted our ticket from the waiting area which was probably the evidence of which car we took. I gave it to him without thinking and then he must have flicked a switch to make the meter run fast. Ended up costing us 800 baht. Local Thai friends then later told us that the proper fare for that trip is 400 baht. Didn't leave us penniless or anything but I just felt annoyed that because I am a westerner it is fine to charge me double.
@ThailandBound4 жыл бұрын
We all live and learn, next time take my tip about getting your taxi from Departures on the upper level rather than arrivals and make sure you get a fixed price…400 baht sound OK but then you would be expected to pay the toll price around 50 to 100 baht. Thanks for your comments.

I've lived in Thailand 5 years and would note scammery is more prevalent in southern tourist cities. The more rural the area the goodheartedness of Thais really shines through. I was 75 miles west of Chiang Mai in the jungle mountains when I bent my front tire rim on road debris. I limped in to the only tire store within 50 miles. They gave me fresh strawberries and water while I waited. After the tire had been disassembled, the tire guy came to me and said his tools were not big enough to bend the rim so it would hold air. So, he takes my tire and rim and walks down the highway with it to the TOT shop. They fixed it, none of them would take any money, so we returned to the tire store where the tire guy remounted the tire. He wouldn't take any money, either.

When people ask you personal questions, which in Europe would make you think their social skill are non existent, just make it reciprocal by starting to ask them the same intimate questions back. You give and they give back, it's a great opportunity to get tho know everything you want about someone. If they don't want to answer you back, you're in an interview, not a conversation...

The 2 teir system for pricing at National parks isn't just a Thai thing. Cambodia also has the 2 teir system. I don't mind it because for me, the higher rates for "tourists" helps to maintain the cultural sites. I also see it as many foreigners don't really care about anything that isn't their place. I have seen so many people who don't care about the cultural and spiritual aspects of places like Anghkor Wat or Wat Phnom. Most locals respect their cultural centers.

Hi Peter, I have been to Thailand twice now and several other South East Asian countries. I did enjoy Thailand a great deal but I find Vietnam to be more welcoming and in general the people are not as ready to rip you off. However there are scammers there too but I found them to be fewer and farther between. I have to say I enjoy watching your videos so much. I really don't know why women would write you and preach. Your information and tips are very respectful. If a woman has been with thousands of men, your mentioning it is not disrespectful its just informing the viewer of her past and pointing out caution should be exercised. I have never seen you disparage a person for what they have done. Your presentation of situations and other peoples experiences are done in a very balanced and truthful way. You just point out the facts for the benefits of men who haven't been around the block as much as you. Thanks again for all your entertaining and useful information. I am convinced you have saved naive, or less worldy men from parting with a lot of their hard earned money. Congrats to you and to all those who take offence to your videos, watch something else. You bend over backwards to respect youtube guidlines to the point that is even quite funny. I'll bet they are just man haters and are pissed off that you are disseminating factual information that will reduce the eventuallity of men becoming victims of these scammers, we can't have that happening now can we!

bad things they have destroyed the real life of Thailand. changed the streets from great shopping and finds area til sterile clean nothingness. i love these small booths . thats real life not grey unbecoming concrete walls. so bring back the vendors on the sidewalks. so much for nr 1. nr2 is spot on. nr 3 well not that i have expirienced that. lucky yea. i often took some old guy recommended by the hotel and his car had no meter ;) 4. times has changed i never got that between 2000 and 2010 5. my thai friend in Bangkok tells me same. the old king was promoting a cleaner Thailand once but things has changed. 6. spot on i was actually a mailman once. now retired. not in Thailand. will he be talking abt marriage and that you dont marry a girl but ½ a village!! 7. dont know abt. that. taking your word 8. like this thing with the bad taste of getting ripped for the electricity 9. so true - thai 40 baht for looking at waterfall - falang 400. renting motorbike thai 50 - falang 250 i rented a guy for 100 baht to rent me a motorbike for 50. i got a different price next time i came :D 10. well maybe the dog has gone worse never seen it like that. on the other hand i have heard stories of people and rabies. 11. wow i never expirienced that. 12. often when the bottle is empty friends are gone - if you got my drift. i dont value "stonetable experts" 13. rollers are ok - as an allergy person i detest people smelling like a "brothel in springtime". 14. things has changed i didnt pay such 15. right banana 20 baht for the elephant. it had diarea all time embarrasing. 16. photo and photoshopping pictures - borroughing from other hotels yea yea. 17. not ok -but a tourist area fenomena not in the village out in isaan. 18. visa and visa runs are worse - and to me its state legalised con. 19. i knew a few places - my ex's sister worked in such- was too ugly to be in a girlybar :D 20. special tour de scam -end up in a dancing bar - wher they put funne stuf in the drink. i left such place when i discovered sodapop bubbles in my beer. the driver thought i vent to the toilet. but i sneaked out backdoor - couldnt tell local police- they porbly into it. but that is excisting be warned!!! Bonus: I dont take my local money with me. take 10 or 20k thaibaht and rest i get in the Allways Thai Money (ATM) machines. by using a credit card. A credit card that im not afraid of loosing. its so easy to get a new from your bank. or block it allwasy bring a laptop where you can transfer money to your secondary credit card. it will never hold more than 200 pound or less. bring 2 cards with you - use the card nr 2. keep nr 1. safe. and no you dint tell about marriage and irritating - but you are not marrying a girl but ½ a village. thats a no go. my ex has found a new sponsor - and im happy. sorry for my bad danish spelling ;) this was my corona time spending - tnx 4 the video.

I actually went to one of the Paragon gem stores outside of Chiang Mai, bought a small gold ring which promptly tarnished and left nice dark rings on my friends finger. Took it back, they said they would dip it again in gold, so I waited until that process was finished. Went back and within a day my friend's finger was again turning black. Learned on that one, lol. One of the things you didn't mention that I really hate in Thailand (and everywhere else they are) is mosquitos. At night I often work thicker socks, long pants, and sprayed Off all over, just to go home, fall asleep and hear that dreaded "whinnnnnnne" in my ear. Everyone one of these is spot on. Been there about a dozen times. I’m lucky enough to go to smaller neighborhoods outside of Bangkok. The massages are still good, the neighborhood markets are still decent. It’s funny because in the smaller neighborhoods the old ladies walk in the morning with long sticks to beat the dogs off. I can also verify the money exchange. They held every US bill up to the light making sure they were real. It took forever... Good video.

1. The state of sidewalks tends to be miserable even without all the peddlers on them. They're narrow, uneven and occasionally sunk in even in places with rather heavy pedestrian traffic. The corner of Thappraya Road and Thep Prasit Road in Jomtien comes to mind. And the only exception I can think of is Ao Nang Beach where most sidewalks seemed to be tiled, waxed and possibly shampooed. Ok, I'm being too harsh here, but you don't really register places where you can walk without being constantly wary of your next step. 3.-4. Taxis are among one of my annoyances as well. In my experience you can find a meter taxi in Bangkok, but literally nowhere else. Perhaps I'm too young and inexperienced. 5. Pollution. The last time I landed in Bangkok this January we started descent from clear skies, down through white clouds and then a pink mist. The same pink mist was prevalent looking inland in my Jomtien hotel and... there wasn't a single clear sunset during 2 weeks in Jomtien. Which was a first for me. 12. I don't mind daytime drinkers as long as they maintain their capacity to come through adequately and don't indulge in driving or using heavy machinery. 16. Wide angle cameras perform miracles on hotel rooms. I booked one that looked decent and cheap for a single overnight stay before moving on. Turned out the room didn't have space enough to store my suitcase and I had to step over it each time I went outside. 19. Proper Thai massage... I've been lucky 95% of the time. The best experience from Chiang Mai in a temple. Their ointment smelled like cow dung to me, but combined with the experience of the well built woman probably at least in her 40s, made me buy a 3-pack of the ointments still treasured by my wife. 21. I take my notes from an ATM back home and I've never had any problems in Thailand.

Hi Pete, I really enjoyed listening to this list and I can relate to them all. I remember this January standing on Sukhumvit Rd. with a big suitcase and I must have gone through at least 7 taxis before one would agree to go on the meter, I speak pretty good Thai and told them I lived there and was not a tourist but still no meter. I only needed to go 2 miles! And like you if they agree to go on the meter i usually tip well. One guy who finally did agree to go on the meter was full of jokes and great humour and so I naturally tipped him giving him way above what he asked before I persuaded him to go with the meter. A good tip for a quality massage is to go to the hospitals where they have very professional and talented masseuse. Thanks for a great post! Philip
@ThailandBound4 жыл бұрын
Hi Philip, 28 years of visiting and living in Thailand and I never knew you could get a massage in a hospital, but it kind of makes sense. I will try that the next time I am in Bangkok, maybe Soi 3. Yeah it kind of sucks when taxi drivers refuse to put the meter on just because of the colour of your skin.

@@ThailandBound Hi Pete, I just text my Thai step mum to get the heads up. She used to take us to this place in Pattaya which is fantastic. Its called Health Land and is on North Pattaya Rd. But they have branches all over Thailand i believe. She used to take us there with my dad and the service is super professional and just what you are looking for. No messing about and a quality service. My father sadly ended up in hospital for many months and im pretty sure we used to get a massage there too. Plus on occasion the massage girl from the hospital used to come out to my dads house in Chon Buri. There was also a famous cosmetic hospital on the other side of the river in Bangkok which she used to take us to for amazing proper massages. But it's too far really to travel from central Sukhumvit. Anyway...loved the list and i am like you. There are things that bug me but all round i love the country. I agree with your list and you tackled it sensitively! Philip

Just a comment about Thai and Foreigner price discrepancy on attractions. I live in Florida and there's a lot of attractions here (Disney, Universal studio, hotels), especially in the Orlando area that have two different prices...one for florida residents and out of state prices. So as a Florida resident I get significant discounts. I realize in Thailand it's a little more widespread as well with rentals. Anyways, just an observation.

I've been walking so much these days, that I no longer use the taxis. When I was living in Bangkok, I'd be taking the taxi for the shortest of distances. In my last visit, the only time I got on a taxi was to get to the airport.

@@ThailandBound that's why I love the quiet islands. Lipi is a long way down and enough night life for the wife and I, without all the noise. Kradan has no cars, no roads only trails, very quiet and relaxing. Normally spend a few days in Phuket before returning home to Aus. I enjoy the place and shopping (except their exchange rate being artificially high), but those bloody trucks p#ss me right off. You can hear them from Km's away, all bloody day. We go 3 to 4 times a year, we were there for 4 weeks in early January. Over the last few years we have found the Thai people becoming more rude and aggressive even in remote locations. The best part of our January trip was the lack if Chinese tourists that even the Thai people don't like. So bloody rude!

I'm not a tourist, so some of the items on your list never happen to me. I've also never had a problem getting my deposit back on a rental, but it takes a really long time...usually a month. Don't know what people do if they are leaving country, and I've often wondered about that. Other than that I share your opinion on all the other points. As for the trucks that drive around with load speakers advertising something I would expand that to noise pollution in general. One thing I really hate is the security guards with their bloody whistles. I know you don't like rural life in Thailand but one advantage is you can avoid a lot of the things on your list. Noise pollution, angry dogs and trying to get your way on things are not one of them. You just can't tell Thais anything. They simply don't care about our our advice, because we are not Thai. Prejudice goes way deeper than just double standard pricing. In my experiences Thais are some of the most prejudice people on the planet, and its not limited to foreigners. There is a reason why there are so many skin whitening products on the market in the land of smiles. :-)

Fair comments, not too harsh. I would add something regarding the loud advertising trucks, it's noise pollution in general. You go just about anywhere and the volume is at 11. It's very irritating in a shopping mall when your ears are ringing from someone hawking products 300 meters away. Upcountry you can add the modified motorbikes the boys ride, ear splitting. Another thing that peeves me is the availability and cost of sun block. You can buy 1,000 different skin whitening products but there's very little sun block on offer and what there is most likely is also skin whitening. When you can find a proper sun block lotion it cost 400 baht for a tiny bottle.

I've had dogs attack me when riding a scooter in Mae Rim. They are fast! I also had them get territorial on me when I walked along some dirt roads near my house. In reference to National parks and the price difference, I don't mind paying extra, but in terms of household goods it always pays to have a local with you as they will charge extra unless it is a big box store. If the massage lady is attractive and young, you wont get a real massage. I am in a small town in Australia and a young Thai lady has rented a small room and set up a massage business. She is 36 y/o and used to work in Hua Hin until she married an Aussie here. She is the best masseuse I have ever come across and she is mostly fully booked out 6 days a week here!

Trouble with the extra pricing in National Parks is that it can really mount up [especially if you are a regular visitor] e.g. going into Khao Yai wherre they will charge you extra for every person in a car and the car.....which can amount to over B2,000 for a visit....this is neither fair nor sustainable

I once, foolishly, transferred my money to a Thai bank - rather than risk carrying it. Unfortunately, when I went to withdraw it there had been a "Typo" made and the bank would not release the funds. What made it worse was, as I became more stressed, the bank managers smile became broader, this infuriated me! Now, I know better, the smile was one of embarrassment at me losing control, and not a derisory smirk. But, at the time, it took the shotgun armed security guard coming in to calm me down. Charging different price for foreigner s is not racism in my opinion... I live in California... As an example non state residents pay more for college tuition as opposed to state residents. Residents have paid for benefits that New arrivals get to enjoy at a higher price.
@drewrowland22794 жыл бұрын
In California -and all of the USA- universities have in-state and out-of state-rates. This is because most universities are all, or partly, funded through state revenue. So charging an out of state student more for the ability to go to that school without having ever paid into the state coffers that subsidize that university makes perfect sense. In Thailand the dual price system is only based on if you are Thai or not. In its application it is racist as it only targets those of different skin tone. Tens of thousands of us are long term, tax paying, business owning residents yet we are routinely charged x10 as much for the same service. -I won't even go into the percentage of the population that actually pays taxes here, but I do know that I am one of them. BIG difference.
