It bothered me the most that Alia didn’t kill the Baron, or really exist in the world. I also wish Sardaukar and the Emperor would have put up more of a fight during the last battle.
@jackredathewarp4 күн бұрын
@@ares106 a time jump would have helped. You get Leto II and Alia. But they probably hated having to use too old of an actress or a cgi version. Maybe a combo would have been convincing but too much work when a simpler solution was at hand.

I liked how they handled Alia. I just think it was too much to throw that concept in when u have the next movie to go more into it. I was never a fan of how the Baron died in the books, it just felt really cartoonish. But I do agree I wish the Sardukar put more of a fight. I wish we saw more of that whole battle, cuz we don’t even see Paul in it. I wish the throne room scene with the Emperor and the Baron was longer. My biggest gripe is the Emperor not saying “My dear Baron” in the movie lol

So much conformity on the web to praise these new Dune movies. Cudos to you for having the bravery and integrity to voice your critiques of these adaptations. I too wish the banquet scene made final cut. That would have been a true accomplishment. Great actors. Great visuals. Great sound, but the script is blah. Lynch was much more visionary by far. Especially in the spice dream sequences. Bottom line, after Jessica puked, I was done. The Chani ending was horrid. aGreat job! Great insights.

I enjoyed both movies, but they don't feel as two pars of a whole. The first is just a lot of takeoffs/flights/landings over story (visuals over dialogue, as you said) and the second suffers from weak characters (Emperor and Irulan are useless, Stilgar becomes a meme, the Baron is there just to prop up Feyd) and wasted plot points (no Leto II, the final scene without Alia or Thufir). I wish we could have had the 5 hour epic Lynch wanted but instead we got a lot of eyecandy.

I'm currently having fun with writing an accurate screenplay of Dune as a 10 episode season. Each episode would be at least an hour long. The episode list: 1. Gom Jabbar 2. A Traitor in your midst 3. Wormsign 4. Terrible Purpose 5. Into the Desert 6. Muad'dib 7. The Hand that holds the Poison 8. Sandrider 9. Gathering Storm 10. Kwisatz Haderach

Yeah, the emperor bothered me quite a bit. And also Stilgar. In the books he is a doubter that becomes an ally, then a friend and finally a believer and the last step he loses a part of himself. But in Dune 2, he is just a one-trick believer. Only seen the movie once, but I did not like it.

Stilgar is kinda comic relief character in dune 2, although really enjoyable.

One very clear difference between Lynch's Dune and Villeneuve's Dune is the lack of audible thought processes in the latter. Whenever I watch Lynch's Dune (as much as the Gen Xer in me loves it), many of the thoughts of the characters feels a lot like exposition for the uninitiated. Sometimes it's so much exposition it acts as a bit of a spoiler, like Jessica's thoughts in the examination room with Yueh when he mentions the Harkonnens and his wife: "They must have killed her. [looks at him grimace] He's holding something back... but there [looks at his forehead and sees the Suk School diamond tattoo] the Imperial Seal of Conditioning, the assurance of trust." How's the #foreshadowing on that last bit? So, Villeneuve does away with the thoughts, so with Paul's scene with Mohiam it's almost a no-brainer that he's also going through the litany of fear in his head. I thought they did a great job having Jessica recite it instead outside - that way we still get to hear it since it's mostly in Paul's head in the book, and this movie obviously isn't doing that. But the important thoughts (like this) they find way's to bring it to the audience. Similarly "He will know your ways as if born to them" is muttered by Kynes in Chakobsa.

I watched the first a few times. Tolerating 3 actors in it that do not work for me. I can't grasp the Stilgar madness in the second movie. The second half of the second movie I found rushed and not Dune. I have zero desire to watch either ever again. Visually interesting. Pacing, chouces and actors spoilled the illusion

I appreciate your analysis and certainly respect your opinion. I've read the original six books several times over the years and have a fondness of the Lynch film. I loved the new movies and felt the compromises that were made in the films made them more accessible to new audiences. I did not feel shortchanged and am glad we were able to see two movies from Frank Herbert's universe come to life. My wife is not a reader of the books and loved both films. Transmuting poisons without antidotes is a bit more challenging than morning sickness. In the book, she is caught in a cave in and manages to not breath for a loooong time while Paul digs her out. Her upchucking is absurd.

The book is about so much more than Paul, Jessica, and the Fremen. The great disappointment in these movies for me is that it is solely about this siingle arc. We learn nothing about the Spacing Guild, and the treatment of the Mentat is criminal. To me, Thufir is far more interesting and pivotal than Duncan or Gurney. The very notion of what a Mentat is is non-existent is these movies, and the Baron's scheme to obtain Thufir is vital in his character development. It is that creepy bastard at his finest.
