This movie was exceptionally well written and intelligent. Not only are Harley and Arthur Fleck a Folie a Deux, but so are the audience/film. I think people are over-exaggerating about this movie being "so bad" because of the ending. I feel like the foreshadowing is so obvious and its baffling to me that people didn't see it coming.

Yeah I agree, I kind of expected the ending personally because of some of the stuff Todd Phillips has said, but also it felt like the only natural conclusion for this character.

Folie à Deux's ending was inevitable. His fate was sealed the moment he stepped into the spotlight on Murray Franklin's show. Because a man like Arthur Fleck might call himself Joker but he could never truly be the Joker. He provided the canvas upon which a movement could project its views but he could never be the leader of that movement. In a way, I think he’s very similar to V from V for Vendetta. It’s not the man beneath the mask (or rather, the makeup) that matters; it’s the ideas that hold the true power.

I mean...they went out of their way to try to get you to have some sympathy for the character and basic uunderstanding about the background in the first film, then rug pulled you and wagged their finger at you in the second film, and ultimately kinda sided with the abusers throughout the film. All of this to reveal that the joker title I. And of itself was more of an unaware self reference in line with how lady gagas attachment with this property was used (in. To lure in fans but ultimately sideline and relegate her presence to an afterthought). The bottom line is the name Joker was used to tease and lure in people only to get them in theaters for a drawn out guilt trip over...what? If your goal was for us to see arthur and not want the joker don't name the film "Joker". All this equated too was luring people to go watch a film that added up to the torture porn of a mentally ill man who lost what little support network he had in the first movie, then try to cover your tracks by guilting the audience for expecting a movie named "Joker" to be about the titles subject matter. "Subverting expectations" has rapidly become a nice buzz phrase for just misunderstanding the property, despising the base viewer that would pay to see it to begin with, and ultimately just being a shitty filmmaker.

@HaveYouMetDawson When people are morally indignant about the *direction the director took their own movie*, you know it's tugging on some unacknowledged personal BS... Like, criticise the movie all you want, but criticise it for what it is... did it succeed in doing what it set out to? People forget they are not owed their personal preference for the plot! The point of movies is not to please or placate the whims of the audience. Honestly I think people genuinely feel these days that the main task of a director is to people please on a mass scale

Also, i find it interesting how when Joker, both the character of Arther Fleck and the movie itself, were no longer what the fans expected how quickly they turned, both in the story and in real life. I swear to god Joker 2 has such a great premise, Arthur has to decide if he wants to become the Joker this deranged person with fans and a lover or return to be just Arthur, the loser with the childhood trauma. In the end Arthur decides to face reality and receive the consequences of his actions but is too late, the joker has already gain a life of its own, and same as in the cartoon at the beginning of the film just one can stand, Arthur or The joker, and we already know how it ends. That in theory because the movie decides to shot itself in the foot by been 1/3 remembering the first movie, 1/3 imaginary sequences, and 1/3 plot that goes nowhere. The joker 2 is such a nothing burger that is frustrating to watch specially with such an amazing premise. But maybe the worse as a fan of musicals is that it is mostly a jukebox musical. Musical numbers are such an easy way to gain access to the deep emotions of a character it would have been specially interesting to see the depths of such a complex character as Arthur Fleck but nooo... we have to sing another cover of a song that kind of fits but not exactly so you don't really know how to interpret it. I love the movie conceptually but they really ruin the execution of it.
@HaveYouMetDawson
@HaveYouMetDawson 3 ай бұрын
@@StillCisTho42 I completely get all of what you’re saying! And while I do agree that an all original musical could’ve been really cool to see I think a jukebox musical makes the most sense for Arthur. We see how he sees his life through the media he consumes throughout both movies, like in the first when he compared his life to a tragedy movie then later a comedy. I think of the juke box musical being Arthur trying to decipher his own feelings and delusions and the best way he can do that is through songs he knows. Idk if he knows enough about his own feelings to have original songs with his own thoughts. Idk that’s just how I kind of interpreted it
@StillCisTho42
@StillCisTho42 3 ай бұрын
@@HaveYouMetDawson Honestly that is a pretty interesting way to see the movie, media could be the only way Arthur has to handle his feelings right now, but I doubt that is the intented interpretation of the movie because Arthur isn't the only one signing covers. Lee and Joker also sing covers, and yeah maybe Lee is also insane and need this coping mechanism (I don't think so) but Joker definetly doesn't need no covers to explain his emotions. If there was a moment to leave the jukebox behind and sing an original number that would be the courtroom scene when Arthur decides to be the Joker. He is finally taking a stance and is strong willed enough to show real emotions so why would he sing a cover of "The Joker is me". If the joker sang only originals to symbolize his strenth of character then I would believe the Media as coping mechanism theory. But as is now jukebox seems to be only the decision the team made and not anything deeper than that.

That’s all he got in his education bag and artistry bag. That’s why is often shown in these movies the movies he watches. I mean there could be nothing original only rehashed things. I came into both movies without worrying about the connection to the source material With that said, i loved the first one but found the 2nd to be very dull and without any substance. The story wasn’t executed as well as i hoped and the musical elements cut off before they actually delivered. For me, i look at the 2nd as a metaphor for obsession. The characters, the music cutting off, the expectation that the audience had etc I found it to be a reality check for those who obsess with ideas or feelings and the consequences of idolising people.

It would have been so easy for them to make a gratifying, violent revenge film of Arthur as the joker causing mayhem in Gotham City. That would have been guaranteed box office mega profit, but I believe this is one of the few examples of a massive high budget movie that wasn't out to be an entertainment product but a piece of thought provoking art. Arthur Fleck represents art, the joker is the entertainment product ("That's Entertainment"). They (being Todd Phillips, and Jaoquin Pheonix) wanted to make a film about their character, Arthur. I think they intenionally brought Harlequin into the story to give fans a bit of a bait and switch, which is a little bit cheap, I don't think Harlequin really needed to be in this film as that's a character that's part of the actual joker storyline, which we learn is not Arthur. Gaga's character could have been someone else. Oh and Pheonix sang the best songs in the movie imo. I personally loved this film as a piece of art, but I don't blame people for not liking it, because it's depressing af.

People are angry that Arthur isn’t The Joker. It’s called “joker”, he is A joker. If you removed the “Arkham” sign and any reference to Gotham, there’s nothing that makes this the DC Joker. He’s an abused kid grown up into a mentally ill man in a terrible city. Anything else is projecting our expectation of The Joker onto him. (Har)Lee’s reaction to him later in the film is the audiences’ misunderstanding of the movie and the character. She wanted the Joker and he was only ever Arthur (just like the critics) Speaking of the music… the reason for the music? He first saw Lee in music therapy and she sang to him. If it was art therapy, Arthur would have been dancing through paintings to woo her in his hallucinations. Lee’s love language is music. She was a privileged upper East sider. She probably had music, voice, dance lessons as the girl of rich parents. This isn’t a musical, it’s the fever dream of a lovestruck, obsessive mental patient. He’s mentally ill, not a mastermind anarchist. Can anyone honestly say that you could see Arthur from Joker1 planning the downfall of Gotham? Outsmarting any of the batmans we’ve seen (Pattinson’s?!). Do you see him making penguin or the riddler bend the knee? Would Bane freeze at the sight of him?See him walk into a room full of mob bosses and walk out unscathed? Manufacture timed explosives, p0is0n gas, fight Batman hand to hand? He was full of swagger as joker, but he wasn’t smarter; he didn’t demonstrate any greater competency, he had no skills other than a good strut. Even his court skills were true to the story; his defense was so incompetent.. exactly what an uneducated person would be able to do. It’s like the arguments you hear in traffic court by people defending themselves. Heck, this was even shown in the 1st movie. Joker’s super moment on the stairs is shown as him just dancing like an idiot (lots of pelvic thrusts) hearing his own music. He was never The Joker. Even at the end of Joker1 we see him in police custody with no sign of a fight. He probably just sat down on the couch and waited for the police. Remember his plan was self h@rm, not murd3r. He didn’t know what to do next. Then he gets rescued by his followers and he stands on top of the car (again, just a strut) Then we see him hunched over, laughing his painful Arthur laugh smoking a cigarette with another counselor in Arkham. He was caught again. The audience wanted to see him powerful, so it did, but he was still Arthur just playing more roles for atttention and love. They wanted Hannibal Lechter but he was always Buffalo Bill

I actually find myself really happy that I feel I got the message they were trying to convey in this movie. I've seen it now two times the first time I loved it so much I thought my mom would love it and she saw it with me as well and was even able to talk to me more about the meanings behind the songs they chose to sing in the movie. Each song used in the movie is not of my generation and a lot of them are very old songs that people may not be familiar with. Learning this the second time watching it even made me love the movie even more. I loved that they did not take this movie to the typical action packed superhero or super villain vibe. They collectively chose to take a path that was extremely more artistic one that you had to really pay attention to and read every word on the screen to interpret and understand. I think there are a lot of euphemisms used in this film that really even make you question if Harley Quinn was real here. I really appreciate what this movie brought to the table and I do understand why a lot of people do not connect with it because typically when we're talking about the joker or Batman or the penguin we are talking about drugs and violence and riots and gangs. There was a reason this movie had two very simple settings so they could really tell a much different story than all of the movies in this gene have told. I think personally they shouldn't have billed it as a musical because even Lady Gaga talked deeply about when she was acting and singing in this movie she wanted to purposely change her vocals to sound as if she was not a real singer. She admitted this was very difficult for her to achieve and that she had to go to months of lessons of practising to make her voice sound this way. They wanted you to feel just a lot of Rawness from the characters but didn't want to be very direct with you with what the characters were thinking and feeling. This is the reason why they use a lot of these older songs in the movie and probably why a lot of the audience did not understand. A lot of the songs she used in the movie have a meeting all on their own when they were created and written and performed. I do believe that each song comes from a certain time period for music and I believe that no song used in the movie was from the same period. Again it was interesting to watch this movie with my 65-year-old mother who really doesn't like action movies but was a social worker for 15 years. My mom really connected with the first film coming from a social workers perspective because the first film really identifies mental health crisis in America and the lack of support that most people get or are not getting. The ending in this movie did not surprise me at all in fact it actually made more sense especially in the beginning when they use the cartoon about the shadow. Learning that he is really not the joker was I believe the entire shocking reveal to the audience. It's like when somebody gets diagnosed as being bipolar, they start getting on MEDS, they go to therapy and maybe several years later they've changed their whole lifestyle are no longer on medication and living a very happy life. Even though you've been diagnosis bipolar you are not the diagnosis. The diagnosis to simply help you understand maybe the reason why you are doing the behaviour doing and it's not an excuse for that behaviour in anyway. In this particular storyline with Arthur Fleck we see all of the Incredibles horrific traumatic events that he has had to endure throughout his life how he has survived and then what he comes to believe is his identity. This movie only amplify how someone suffering from a mental illness really has to go on a path to finding themselves again. I related to it a lot actually as someone who came out as gay and trying to discover myself and who I was without being the label of "gay". Harley Quinn in this movie I think has a very interesting character because her point is to just simply show even more when a person goes through when they idolise someone or something. We can look at this as idolising the stars of Hollywood and how really as it said in many different religions that we are worshipping false idols. When we do this we get disconnected from our true sounds, our higher selves and even God. Harley wanted so badly just to simply breathe the same air as the joker putting all her identity in what he would offer her in the world while not having any spotlight on who she was as an individual. I believe that's why in the end she ultimately leaves him in again I still kind of toy back-and-forth whether the character was really real. So much of the movie is fantasy and I'm sure everyone has their interpretation. I just think it was a movie that exceeded my expectations something that I had talked about for so many days afterward and analysed. I know everyone has their own taste but this movie really makes you dive deep in without it being so direct.

I saw it for the first time on Saturday, loved it, saw it again last night, and loved it even more the second time. It has its flaws, sure, but the sheer amount of hate that's currently getting hurled at it is absurd (and if we're being completely honest, I think a lot of the criticism is being offered in bad faith). I wish I could help people see the same movie I see when I watch Folie à Deux, especially the entire "The Joker Is Me" sequence which I thought was simply stunning. This is the hill I've chosen to die on, I guess. Joker: Folie à Deux is an incredible film and its ending was the only possible ending there was for Arthur Fleck. I can only hope that it gets a serious critical reevaluation in the future or at least becomes a cult classic. And until it does, I'll proudly keep championing it.

Terrific review man, finally somebody agrees with me how masterful and truly underrated Folie A Deux is. There are far worse movies this year, Mufasa The Lion King, Kraven The Hunter, Kung Fu Panda 4, Venom The Last Dance and Despicable Me 4 for example. To me this film is just as strong as Joker 2019 and took risks, it's so unique being a musical too and the Joker is my favourite musical number in the movie. And the acting from the entire cast is some of the finest acting of 2024!

I feel like this film is actually better than Joker (2019) and Joaquin Phoenix's performance is also somehow better. He manages to find new things to do with this character and goes even further into his dark emotions.

I am in the camp of people that did not like it whatsoever. I just felt this film completely undid what I loved about the first! But I will give them credit for going for broke in terms of creativity. They definitely changed it up big time. I just wasn’t a fan of those changes. I’ll just stick with the first movie. But I’m glad you loved it and were able to find plenty of qualities in it that justified your reasons for loving it! Maybe down the line I’ll give it another shot and see if my opinion still feels the same but as of now, to me, it was not a good film and didn’t need to be made. It was only made because the first film was such a success. I don’t think sequels should be made that way unless it’s been the plan all along. And this definitely wasn’t the plan. But again, I’ll revisit it at some point. Maybe lol but again I’m glad you enjoyed it

I am not shocked by the audience review bombing, they were expecting something different as you said, even though it was announced years ago the movie was a musical with Gaga in it. I am angrier at the critics' low reviews. Are they supposed to understand art house movies or are they all idiots paid by Disney? Critics used to be professional back in the Roger Ebert days. I love the first movie, I understood its message right, not like those brainwashed toxic DC fanboys. The first Joker was not a comic book movie, just a drama with some names and references taken from DC comics. I liked the musical aspects because I like musicals, Joker 2 musical sequences reminded me of Chicago or Cabaret. I would have preferred they hired original song writers, it would have cost less in copyright too. This was an 8 out 10 with one viewing. The first one was an 9 out of 10, then after seeing a second time I changed to a 10 out of 10. This is a very expensive arthouse film, not for wide audiences. WB should have given Todd less budget but now it's too late, the review bombing plot worked and there won't be any more Joker movies in this universe. James Gunn got what he wanted. Now, he must be meddling with Matt Reeves script so there's no DCU that's not Gunn's DCU.

Joker 2 is great, defo no masterpiece like the first,but it was really good 👍🏻💯 the music is in Arthur's head, its his way of coping. It made sense. I don't get the hate. It wasn't overwhelming, gaga was alright as well. I don't care,j never did care what people said about a film, joker 2 8 stars out of 10. I've seen it twice and third forth time on mannic streaming (app) ..free excellent copy

Finally, a person that doesn't overly exaggerates this film as the worst thing they ever seen! People git been capitalizing on the downfall of this film with the most lack luster copy and paste content by trashing on this film to make a quick buck. People know this film wasn't that bad just a few weird decisions but won't appreciate the good qualities, society now would rather have another multiversal over-stimulating big crossover brain rot movie than to enjoy anything anymore and wonder why movies now are becoming flops. The only thing I will want with this film is a Re-Cut and thats better than most people trying to bring this film and these studios down... 🃏

Maybe not the worst movie ever made but pretty bad. The first movie had its issues, but at least there was something to like about the main character. This was just a sad, slow, boring movie about a sad, weak, pathetic person with really no redeeming qualities, except maybe we feel sorry for all the abuse he’s been through. But I guess some people are into that.
