George needs a big lesson in how to speak with humility. I’m a coach. I would have told her buy food first, keep lights on, keep car going, keep clothes. THEN pay what you can towards credit cards. Stop using them! If you can’t afford to pay them then don’t! Let them sue you if they want but you’re on a fixed income. Good luck getting anything. Have some kindness in your voice George. I wish Dave took this call.

Stop telling her to go back to work at 86 years old. She could rent out a room or rooms to a college or undergrad student. This is what a lady up in Massachusetts did and she is just fine. Her house was so big she could not afford the repairs and rented three rooms out to Grad students. The students really like her and checks in on her.

This was painful to watch. You don’t give advice to 86 year old woman to go back to work, so she can pay off 30K in credit cards. Her annual income is about $12,000! She clearly needs help from a social worker or someone with compassion and expertise, not a finance guy telling her to get rid of her dog. Sickening.

@@m3932213 Probably because the Ramsey show is very right wing, pull yourself up by your bootstraps and don't rely on the government for anything. I don't think that's necessary bad to hear for young folks as they need to work and take care of themselves. But by the time someone is 86 years old, the horses have left the barn. Time to either die in debt or seek assistance from God, children, the government or anyone who is listening.

I disagree with George's suggestion that she get a job. She is 86 and clearly is not able to work due to her health. What she needs is a social worker who can provide her resources. Also there are food pantries that she could use. She should also go to the local Humane Society for free dog food. He did not mention Aging and Disability Resource Centers (ADRCs) or calling 211 which would provide resources for utilities, food and healthcare. George definitely was out of touch with this call.

This was difficult to watch. Not only because she is in a really sad situation, but also because George spoke to her with such little empathy. There were no practical solutions given for this kind of unique situation. Like for one, just default on your credit card debt. Let them come for it when you've passed and take it from your estate. Also, she could qualify for some other government assistance potentially or maybe some local charity solutions like Meals on Wheels to ensure she has food regularly. And its far from ideal, but even a reverse mortgage might be beneficial to someone in her dire situation. When you told her to go out and get a job I wanted to slap you through the screen.

This is so wrong George, she is 86 years old and you sending her back to work. She worked until she was 80 years old. She said “ I was a single mom all my life with no help.” This goes back to men who abandoned their children and leave all the burden on the women. You should recommend her to a non profit or food shelter to subsidize her income. She worked all her life. She never abused taxpayers. Never lived on welfare. She should be getting food stamps. Help with utilities. The system is so unfair to people who get up and go to work everyday. She went to Pharmacy technician school. She did not sit home and abused taxpayers to say she was taking to care of her children. She worked.

The advice here is INSANE. It’s totally inappropriate for an 86 year-old woman. That existing credit card debt doesn’t matter. It just doesn’t. She doesn’t need to sell her house to pay it off. She needs to hold onto her house for dear life, as it’s protected under Florida law as her homestead. If she can get some help from her daughter, she can survive without increasing it. She should talk to a lawyer. Florida is full of lawyers who specialize in issues that impact seniors, and full of lawyers who will provide her with free legal services and help her develop an actual plan. Selling her house, moving into an apartment and getting a job are NOT the best options. And Ramsey Solutions should pull this video or add on to it to recommend that she seek professional help.

I don't get health insurance through Medicaid, but I am on another program where they pay my medication co-pay and other things. The problem is these two think about retirement from the vantage point of having a chunk of money in the bank for retirement while some of us never managed that. Although I do have some now. Her situation isn't totally known, so she doesn't need judgement. She needs help surviving. She needs help getting connected to her local Senior Services through her county. She likely qualifies for many services at her age and with her health concerns. Services such as food stamps, home energy assistance, legal rights services, meals on wheels, homestead water rate discount, etc. There are senior housing programs too. Maybe she could be paired with a vetted roommate who will not only pay rent, but help around the house too. Before my mom passed, she qualified for many services through our local counsel on aging. It's one thing to tell a person having money trouble to not acquire another pet. It's another to tell someone to get rid of a pet they already have. Did you even listen George? She said the dog cost $180 for ONE month. She even clarified it was just one month. Not every month. She's 30k in debt. You think this dog is her biggest problem? For many seniors a pet gives them purpose, a companion and a reason to get out of bed in the morning. George may as well have told her to unalive the dog and herself for as much empathy he showed. 🤨

None of these people have been dirt poor, like scrape the bottom of the barrel poor. They don't understand and are heartless. They have a scripted answer and can't think outside the box. Ask the poor woman if she attends a church that can help, can she rent out a room, set her up with food stamps or disability, can she sell her sweet voice for birthday calls! @@lmason3001 Great! I have no issues with the individualistic mindset of many Americans but when it becomes too extreme and it is all about ME ME ME, I take issue with it. There is nothing wrong with having strong family ties that I was told used to be the case in the past (I remember those LIttle House on the Prairie episodes). The Bible has always talked about taking care of your family and even your relatives when needed. This doesn't mean one should condone irresponsible behavior. The reason many Asian-Americans from different Asian nations are rich or at least middle class in the US is because of strong family ties. There is power in numbers and pooling resources together. No person is an island (which is another biblical principle). I don't believe in the so-called self-made man/woman. We don't live in a vacuum and we achieve our success with the help of other people directly or indirectly, even though for those without wealth or good connections/network, there will more hard work, perseverance, tenacity, patience, and courage involved. And this channel is supposed to be Christian.

Who is EVER going to hire an 86 year old even if she was physically able to work? This mean man asked her if she could sell her home for $250,000 and then go buy another home for $200,000. The realtor commissions and all of the other costs to SELL her home plus all of the costs of BUYING a new home will eat up the $50,000 "profit" before she even makes a CC payment. Tax money is for these people. USA is so dystopian, here in Sweden no one would dare tell a dying or ill woman to hustle! Jeez Louise. Yeah, work until those bones break. the house will be sold and pay off those debts, she needs to enjoy the life she has left. She’s 86 with leukaemia, she may not have much time left! she lives alone… isolation will kill her quicker than the stress of having a furry companion. Agree. And I have seen a lot of other good advice suitable to her circumstances from other commenters. Answers should be tailored to the needs of the caller and not a one size fits all. Even a reverse mortgage might be helpful since with leukemia, she is nearing her end (even though I know reverse mortgage schemes are rip-offs and a big no no for Ramsey and his cohorts like CC). However, this guy host and some heartless commenters here prefer that advice be given with put downs because a caller should not be thin-skinned or a snowflake, according to them. What good will shaming her do her now? She knew that life sucks and no one is making excuses for her mistakes. It is what it is. And I don't buy the excuses of the shills here that this was done to warn us about not saving for our future (as if we don't know that already if we follow this show LOL). The old lady was explaining her expenses but they did not want to hear her out. Had they listened they could have told her what to cut (aside from the dog, but she needs it for companionship since people are not robots), what to sell (not just the house), etc. But they just stuck to their usual script without any nuance. She has issues with her daughter, so now is the time to tell her to make amends since at her age, she should try to create good memories with her daughter. This is supposed a Christian-leaning show, right?
