I'm a Little Bit Sad About Walmart and Casio in 2023

It's the year 2023. In fact, it's late in the year 2023 and although this is the 40th Anniversary year for the G-Shock Square, I'm just not feeling the excitement I was hoping to feel. Yes, there have been several new variations of the G-Shock Square released this year but very few of them have my two favorite features, namely, Tough Solar and Multiband 6. So I've more-or-less been sitting this year out when it comes to G-Shock Squares. That makes me sad. I have a few things on my "Wish List" and maybe I'll splurge around Christmastime but, honestly, the watches I'm considering are each more than $300 and I'm prone to drag my feet about buying watches which cost that much (even if they ARE good-looking G-Shocks or Oceanus watches). So, stay tuned and I might have some new watches to talk about in the not-too-distant future.
But the really sad thing I have to accept is that Walmart has basically given up on selling G-Shocks at the local stores in my area (northern Utah). Many of the Super Center stores which used to have "Fine Jewelry" counters have eliminated them within the last year or so. And those which still have the official "Fine Jewelry" cases have managed to make them look like sloppy, run-down garage sales. It's very sad. Watch my video to hear more about it.

Thank you for taking the time to share this little slice of reality. I have to admit, I have only ever been in a Walmart once in my life, but all the same, I appreciate this update to what is going on beyond my own little corner of this great nation. It really is sad that a once vital tool is now merely an "accessory" SMH. As for the 40th anniversary, you are so right. At the end of the day, they are a business in a doomed industry. How dare they not know who Greg Anderson is?!?!? Stay well and best regards, TGV

Greg - what is happening at Walmart, is exactly what happened to Target about 12 years ago. They, too had a fine jewelry counter, and sold some G-Shocks and a few other watch brands behind glass. Well that’s long gone and today their selection is relegated to one shelf of off-brand watches, a few Casios, and a few Timex.

Casio has been moving away from MB6 because it doesn't work for a large number of their customers, especially in Asian region. Bluetooth time sync works globally and keeps those customers happy. In addition to that, the radiowave apps are so slow that one is better off setting up the time manually than to go through all the hassle of messing up the home city and setting up your phone just to receive the atomic time signal. The original G-Shock square didn't have solar or MB6 so they are giving tribute to the ethos of that model by releasing basic squares in various colours while also marking the squares with all the bells and whistles as an upmarket product.

You're absolutely right about Casio policies. I should add that a more resistant display or a negative display which could be read in everry light condiions at higher prices could be interesting but wont pay more for the same watch with aonly a fancy chase but the same module. Her in Spain we dont have Walmart, but it seen to be the same policies in loc!al stores. Greetings Greg!

Heya Greg 🤠 . I absolutely agree. It's the same situation here in the Boise area. I spoke w/ a regional manager & they're closing the jewelery counters due to a rampant & obscene amount of theft that they can't stop so rather than continuing to lose $$ they were forced to close the department down all together. That's why they don't have any of the cool model cassio's or any of the G-Shocks & nothing over $42 casio's now. It's due to a large international gypsy style theft ring that moved into the area from Honduras that's working in a good portion of the 10 Western States primarily idaho, oregon, utah, montana, washington, nevada & arizona. They're buying and selling stolen goods across multiple state lines and they've hit Walmart hard. It's a large organization and very organized and they're not just into retail theft. They're running scams of all shapes and sizes and they're also running a bunch of straight up thuggery, smash & grabs, mugging people and stealing their cars too.

My local Walmarts have also started to downsize their watch inventory, but instead of clearance the item in a sale, they are simply removing the higher priced GShock models. I had my eye on MTG M900 but both of the Walmarts who were carrying this model locally removed them from their display cases.

I have enjoyed the MTG M900 a lot and still use the older MTG900 as a daily “beater” when I’m doing rough work with my hands. Maybe you won’t find a Walmart clearance deal but I hope you can at least get something like a Black Friday discount somewhere.

Those two models you mention, the 5610u and the round 100 are actually the two gshocks I recently own. Love the solar+mb6 combination. Got them both all black with negative display. Not as easy to see the numbers (specially on the 100) as normal ones but they look much better IMHO There are many other nice gshocks but they don't have solar and or mb6

The new LF-20W-8AEF looks very good from casio, the white one gives a very retro sf vibe, it fits better in the alien universe than the og alien casio watch. what I dislike stylistically about it is the representation of dst/alarm/ mute which in my opinion was designed in very lazy way so i use it without those lines being visible. and that it's a more expressive than the royale while it does the same thing.

This is the same setup at my 3 local Walmarts up here in Eastern Canada. It's been like it for a year or 2 and actually I see a lot of empty casio boxes. I guess some bad apples are taking the casio watches out of the box and putting them in the cheaper "george" branded ones. Pretty sad actually. Walmart up here has gone down hill in products and apparel and overall shopping experience. Feels like a glorified dollar store now. But I did get a AE-1500WHX for $35 CAD😊

Hi, Greg! If you're ever in the UK, Argos does a pretty decent selection of Casios at competitive prices. I, however, live in Moscow; the one big shop here has a good range, but the average price is much higher than in "the West" - you're looking at $450 or so for a ProTrek Multiband, and I'm not even sure that the radio control works in Russia (for some reason). Good hunting anyway. Cheers 🍻!

I purchased the 40th anniversary dw6640re and the dw6600pc directly from the Casio website because they offered the lowest prices available online; believe it or not! I too purchased the yellow Rangeman minus the carbon fiber strap. The clear display screen with the yellow tinted display wheel justified the purchase for me. Casio has released some new bioplastic Pro Trek models recently. I own a dozen or more Pro Trek versions, so I am not amused by the new gw9500 Mudman. It's a ProTrek module in a beefier case! I miss seeing the clearance stickers on Casio watches at Wally World! Gone the way of the Dodo bird have they.

I like the gw 5000U but I don't like the price. The gw b5600 is a watch I like but from where I live in Spain they only come with negative displays which is a no-no. Prepare to shell out.Its always as good as it gets for price and quality in the present as it will ever be for us with little to spend. The future for entry level offerings is on a downward trend in quality, offerings, and upward trend in pricing. With the yearly currency devaluation, this will only get worse despite the economy getting better or worse. I would imagine it's getting very hard for these companies. It's not so much their greed as it is the destruction of our money's value. And I don't see that continuing trend ever turning around. I am also a big fan of Casio and I have more Casio watches in my very conservative collection- watches are not popular with the younger generation, my high school son wears a watch and during gym time, he is the most popular guy because no one has their smart phone and he is the only student with a watch and outside in the field there is no clocks- everyone ask him for the time.

Yeah that sucks for you man... I don't have many watches (limited budget) so I have a lot of Casios to enjoy getting yet. Just this year I got a Waveceptor in stainless steel, and Monday I have a Duro coming. (I also have an AE1200 and a MRW-200H.) I think it's just a sign o' the times... as watches become less and less prevalent in society, less people want an affordable ones, and they decide only to cater to the well-heeled collectors who don't think anything of dropping $500 on a watch. Why produce millions of $20 watches if not enough people buy them? Economies of scale. Hope you find some cool watches to buy soon Greg!

Something is broken in the world. I used to be a big fan of movies. Today, it seems like the movies are either produced for over 100 million dollars each or they're put together for less than 10 million. There's nothing in between and that missing hole in the entertainment world REALLY shows. Is Casio's situation similar? Super expensive or super cheap without much to offer in the middle? Maybe not. I admit I have a blind spot when it comes to mid-priced watches if they DON'T have the features I like, including Tough Solar and Atomic Time setting.

@@GoodTimekeeper The middle is falling out, everything is dirt cheap or expensive. Globalization and Internet commerce I think has a big part to play. Even as an IT guy who was on the Internet in the early 90s, and spend a lot of time there... what it has become, I'm not entirely sure is good for humanity. As resources are spread thin around the globe, the gap between the rich and the poor (and their ability to be mobile within that spectrum) is worse and worse.

I see the way that smart phones have destroyed the standalone camera market. I should not be surprised that something like an Apple Watch can destroy Casio. But what happens when the Apple Watch’s battery gives up or the software can’t be updated anymore? I still have a G-Shock from 2006 running on its original rechargeable battery!

Greg if you see this comment please answer. Why do you buy watches that are slightly different? For example squares with different colors. I have noticed the color is not dramatically different on a few watches. What’s the point ? When are you going to wear it ? I am sure you barely wear all this watches because there are too many watches! The second question is why do you wear 2 watches at the same time ( on both hands ). What is the purpose? They show exactly the same time. Sorry for my English I am not native

I have a favorite jacket. It's available in different colors. I have more than one color of the same jacket. To me, the watches are similar to the jackets. I pick a favorite color and then, since I like the watch, I sometimes buy another one which is a different color. Often, a watch can look great in more than one color. I don't want to settle for just one. I also shop for good prices and I WAIT for deals, so I'm not careless about how I buy watches. I have a lot of watches and, when it's not too awkward, I like to wear two at a time. Also, in my work, I'm often carrying things and/or holding things and it's not always easy to look at the time on a specific wrist, so I like to make the time available on both of them.

It's a problem if you wear say a Gravitymaster GPW1000 or an MTG, then you hop down to a 5610 or a GD350, you feel you're wearing a cheap watch. What I'm saying is around the $100 to $150 equivalent £s (I live in the UK), you get a pretty cheap feeling Gshock. I remember when you could buy (around 2018) the MTGS1000 new, for less than the full metal Casioak or even a Gsteel nowadays. I guess all the traditional watch manufacturers are trying to battle the smartwatch onslaught. I think Gshock did ok for they're 40th, especially with the lauded 40th anniversary dw5040pg. I guess we're all just getting old Greg.

Feeling cheap doesn't mean cheap. This is your subjective feeling based on wrong assumption that every lighter thing is worse than heavier. Sometimes it is true. Sometimes it is not true.

You're right. I love my 5610, it's just the right watch for the many activities I use it for. I agree heavier doesn't mean better. Though I've noticed with age (50), bigger dials are better for older eyes .....

I noticed that about Walmart, too. Sad that they’ve lowered their standards (can you go lower than low?). The jewelry section is either gone, or they haven’t restocked. I think George is a made for Walmart brand (cheapo). I have George t-shirts and briefs from Walmart. 🤣

As far as Casio, they seem to be following Seiko's business model as of late (higher end models). As far as Walmart, the ones near me carried lots of Casio's (World time, F91, A158) and a few G-Shocks (Dw5600 and 6900) a couple of years ago. Now, they seem to only carry $10 Georges and $15 Armitrons. I think the trend in the good ole USA is that folks are wearing Smart devices or nothing at all. Young people unfortunately don't have the fascination with wrist watches like you and I do.

Japan's economy has been stagnant since 1992 ...yes that is 32 years and counting and in 2023 they even went into a recession, but since most the run of the mill Casios and G-Shocks are not even produced in Japan it is pretty irrelevant.
