Re. "Love Hypothesis", as another female biologist - OMG, when Cindy (of 'with Cindy') reviewed this book, I was HORRIFIED at what the premise actually was (DO NOT consider sitting on anyone's lap at a seminar. And don't real- or fake-date a student if you are a professor. EVER. Even if they are a grad student who is only like 2 years younger than you). And the behavior of the love interest you mention (being the "makes students cry" guy) makes it even worse.

YES! because from what I've seen men who act like that (being an ass) is actually a diversity problem in academia and STEM specifically. (It's already really exclusive and creating an emotionally hazardous school/work environment means even more people can't participate. And the book definitely doesn't denounce that behavior as much as it needs to

@alexadevillez995 well idk about all that, but what I do know is in ANY competitive environment people are gonna be tough onnyou. It is what it is. The work they do can save or end lives, they needed to be precise and detail oriented.

As a woman in STEM (fresh grad agri. biotechnology) who wants to get my Masters and PhD I decided not to pick up The Love Hypothesis after watching Cindy (withcindy) review. The level of unprofessionalism that is in this book, and the way the heroine acts like a teenager despite being a PhD student is just something else.

as someone who is interested in STEM, i read the book and was disappointed. The book never really covered the STEM topic in detail which was disappointing. Also i didn’t like the romance, it felt very forced. I thought the characters were bland “even if the writer added the main characters mother is dead to add character ‘depth’”. The main characters best friend (i completely forgot her name) was not a good friend at all, even if she didn’t know they were fake dating what she asked them to do was weird. Also i feel like the writer casually added assault without treating the topic with the right amount of care.

I didnt like the book as much as everybody hyped it up. It was mid. Too preachy at times. just like the reviewer said “STEM 2HARD” but also “girls can do stem like men.” It was jarring. Im not stem but i am in combat support which is hyper masculine. So i didnt like the immature behavior. Combat support is also hard, but it aint impossible. And it didnt ruin my life (until i had kids and had to split my time) So i didnt like how childish the main character olive was.

Worth watching this for the David Attenborough impression. I loved the first Brown sister's book and I really want to read the second. As a grumpy old man I'm obviously not the target market for these types of book - which is a phrase I hate but it'll do for the moment - but I found it such a joy to read. I read Georgette Heyer's 'Venetia' at the same time, which is a regency romance novel and I liked as much but for different reasons. Thank you for the video. I've got two of these three books on my TBR. PS My brother worked as a fishmonger and getting rid of the smell of fish is incredibly difficult.

You know what... It kinda just fills me with exultation seeing people who are outside of the primary demographic for a particular style or genre[ or etc.] being fans of stuff, and I just love it! 💜 (it really just goes to show[ in my opinion] that, even though yes there are some merits to acknowledging that certain things will generally appeal to certain types moreso than it will appeal to other types OR than other sorts of things will appeal to those same certain types, that doesn't mean that you necessarily have to be that certain type or within that intended audience yourself to still pick something up and maybe not always totally or at all hate it too^^) You just keep being you and enjoying what you enjoy. ^-^ _(Although, I suppose it could maybe also be that if you are a romance reader in general, you could perhaps still consider yourself a part of the target demographic anyway .. at least if you want to get a little less stereotypical-generalizing and/or a little more technically-factual or whatever about it? The intended audience for any or at least most genre(s) is, generally speaking, fans specifically of that genre? idk 🤔🤷‍♀️😅 😹)_ Sorry .. I'm babbling-hope none of this comes off too weird or anything; but, I just wanted to say, I really appreciate people who aren't too afraid to either try and/or genuinely enjoy something even if they sometimes aren't the exactly intended target for it. 🙂 If any of that even makes any sense Loll

Well, I'm a PhD student, and I really enjoyed The Love Hypothesis. I also could laugh at all the inside jokes pertaining to academia, so this was nice. But I guess I loved the setting more than the story itself. I thought it was an extremely realistic setting. It's hard to complete a Ph.D., and there are many problematic aspects of academia that need to be addressed. When completing a Ph.D., we always talk about the negative aspects of our studies with our student colleagues (the timeline, the grants, the impostor syndrome, the pressure to fill our CV with scientific presentations, etc).... yet.... we love that we do and we don't give up, despite everything. That's how I see Olive: she perseveres despite all the crap because she ultimately loves science and she wants to answer her research question! As for the mean side of Adam, well... I kinda agree with him. Academia is mean. As students, we often internalise criticism when someone criticizes our work, but we need to learn to not take it personally. I have a hard time doing this, I take everything personally, even when reviewers don't have a clue about my identity and they destroy my article with comments. So, we do have to learn the lesson that our work is going to be criticized throughout our whole career, but it never has to be about our personal worth and self-esteem. That being said... it is sad that advisors need to prepare us for the sharks out there. Academia in general shouldn't be too harsh. So, I thought it was realistic in this way. Problematic? YES. But realistic. Me and my colleagues we often talk about how we want to change the world (well, Ph.D. programs) once we become faculty members :P That being said, were there silly moments? Of course! When Olive sits in Adam's lap during a conference, well that simply is not done in real life. And yes, I rolled my eyes every time she said that he is soooo large and big. But all in all, I'm truly glad I didn't listen to other Booktubers who literally laughed at this book and even insulted readers who enjoyed it and read it myself. I liked it. Far from my favourite romance, but it made me smile. The smut was way too explicit for my taste though. I agree with your assessment of their chemistry and Olive's immaturity. She doesn't act like a 26-year old in my opinion. And her friend who forces their interactions is a very bad friend: if I knew my friend was dating a faculty member, I would respect their privacy and wouldn't force them into public displays of affection. I gave it 3,5 stars overall.

I really like your thoughts on The Love Hypothesis. Honestly, since I'm doing my PhD in a STEM field rn I actually sort of liked reading it because I felt like Olive understood my pain because a lot of it /is/ super tough and difficult and I'm extremely lucky enough to be in a supportive program that's very conscientious of diversity and supporting traditionally underrepresented student groups... but from other people I know at other institutions, especially "prestigious" U.S. ones like The Love Hypothesis takes place at, I think they tend to have a lot more toxic, competitive atmosphere and uphold a lot more traditional western values and standards than other places. So to me that felt like the grounding aspect of the book (unfortunately) that let me suspend my disbelief on some of the romance plot points and just enjoy myself overall while also feeling seen by what the students are experiencing. I also think it's completely valid to want more lighthearted and positive views of PhD environments though too, especially in fiction that is meant to be more escapist in nature like a romance.

As someone in academia pursuing a masters, I wasn't really upset with the negative connotation attached to being a graduate student that was presented in the Love Hypothesis. A lot of what was described is absolutely true and something I could relate to and felt comforted by. It was still apparent to me that the characters enjoy their field of study and what it means for them but acknowledged that it isn't sunshine and rainbows. A lot of the time, it's constant anxiety, and being underpaid as a TA and dealing with a lot of uncertainty. I personally didn't have an issue with the main love interest being a very strict teacher since it seemed like this was something that was quickly addressed - Olive didn't shy away from calling him out on it. Plus we later see Adam take this into account, so it's not like his demeanor and attitude was unwavering. If you wanna read another romance book which features women in stem, The Soulmate Equation and The Kiss Quotient are great. With that being said, I freaking hated "It Happened One Summer" - predictable storyline, one dimensional characters, contrived interaction between characters, inappropriate scenes/occurrences (who tf has sex in a hospital room full well knowing one of your colleagues is in the same hospital with a major life threatening injury ???). I felt like "Act Your Age, Eve Brown" was the perfect execution of the grumpy sunshine trope. Talia Hibbert has a wonderful way of conveying characters' vulnerabilities and making them fully fleshed out. I felt like it had the same idea that It Happened One Summer Had - both characters feel lost in life, are spiraling, and as a result are cut off from their privileges in order to " find themselves." The plotline and character progression in Act Your Age, Eve Brown felt way more realistic and gradual. You really got to see inside their heads and were made aware of just how three dimensional the characters were. The autism representation made me so happy. Also, the spicy scenes in this book??? Chefs kiss lmao

I loved your discussion around the love hypothesis! I haven't read it yet and I honestly thought Adam was also a PhD in the book, but him being a PI dating a PhD student .. not sure how to feel about that😀 Also, as someone who left stem after my master's mainly due to the environment and the intense pressure to be your best at all times, I think I'd feel the same about the love interest being one of those supervisors:/ There's a non fiction I still really want to read called The disordered cosmos by Chanda Prescod-Weinstein about the author's journey to becoming a cosmologist and the issues that are prevalent in academia but still aren't addressed often (more than only the gender imbalance).

I'm actually really mad about the love hypothesis (spoiler warning and TW for SA!!!) The sexual assault of Olive is used to bring the characters together which I thought was a bit weird but then also it would have been great to have Olive stand up for herself (like to show that as a sexual assault victim it's important to speak up even if it's hard) but in the book, the love interest (Adam? I already forgot his name, he's so boring ... but that's not essential for my point here) takes her evidence of the SA and handles the situation which made me really mad because pls let her handle the situation herself and not have the strong man do it for her like that's such bad representation and I feel like the author just used it to bring the characters together while handling the topic very poorly. Obviously, that's just my opinion on the topic, though!! Oh and I want to add that I agree that the sexual assault was handled well at first I just thought that Adam taking care of it and not her doing it herself wasn't the best way to conclude that issue.

Really fun to hear your book reviews! I've been reading more of them as well because I need something lighter. Favorite recent reads are "The Flatshare" by Beth O'Leary and also a collection of short stories by Rosamunde Pilcher called "A Place Like Home". Been nice to just read a short story and have some tea and just relax...

Pls read "The Charm Offensive", I absolutely died of cuteness. Major "Red, White and Royal Blue" vibes but a completely different setting.

I’ve only read two romances.. I didn’t love the hating game but I thought the unhoneymooners was a fun read! Loved the setting of it

Hm i was thinking of reading the unhoneymooners might give it a try as setting is always something i like! I also read Well Met by Jen Deluca and adored that book! I think its somewhat similar to the premise of the unhoneymooners so u might enjoy it too (it was a five star for me)!

Hey Leo! If you want suggestions for beautiful romance books, there is one by Abbie Emmons - 100 Days of Sunlight. It's the sunshine-grumpy hate to love, where the female character loses her eyesight in a car accident and the guy helps her see that there are other ways to experience the world than just sight. The CATCH being that he has no legs. And while he knows exactly how she feels and reaches out to help her, she has no idea he's an amputee, and the Third Act conflict is just

I haven't picked up The Love Hypothesis because I am a PhD student and I have concerns about the trope that you mentioned about PIs lol thank you for following up on that part. I love the mediocre women in STEM having fun lol Dani Brown was very exciting for me to read honestly. The quote that Dani's mentor gave her in the bathroom is on my notion page.
worst books i've read (and why i love some of them)
