Thank you glad someone said this. However... if your debt is charged at 5%, and you can invest your savings for a higher interest rate... don’t pay off your debt? I feel like Dave would never give that advice, but if you’ve got mountains of student loans at a low interest rate but have tens of thousands saved... you’re probably much better off investing than paying off debt with your savings.
@RKmndo4 жыл бұрын
@@noahmcdaniel4920 Right now you're probably best off working on a full emergency fund and ensuring that multiple income sources are solid. The economy and markets are volatile. If your e-fund and income are solid, I'd consider doing both loan payment and investing. If your debt rates can go up, I'd put more money towards paying them off ASAP. Rates aren't likely to get much lower. Investing early in life is also a good idea. If your employer matches a 401K, get at least the full match. It's an automatic 100% gain on your pre-tax contribution at that point in time. Putting in double their match is auto 50% gain. Triple their match is auto 33% gain. Quadruple their match is auto 25% gain. Pentuple their match is auto 20% gain. Put that money into a fund that typically makes good gains. Some people lose out by not putting their contributions to work. Live frugally, grow your income, and pay off your unsecured debt, especially high/variable interest debt on things that are not appreciating/cashflowing assets. Depreciating liabilities and high-interest debt are bad.

Assuming it was originally going to take a few years to pay off that $10k in CC debt, if they just avoid an HVAC issue for a year that's close to $2k in interest payments avoided. im in a similar position.... i want to pay off my car which right now is at $13k, i would be refinancing it to lower the interest rate and i have about $9k saved up.... i have student loans but im still going to school so no point in paying it off when the amount will continue to increase. i like having an emergency fund so i thought of paying a good less than half on my car and still have a good amount left..
@andrebrown26954 жыл бұрын
I understand Dave's logic when it comes to paying off debt and having the burden off your shoulders. But not having cash and something happening (like the AC) is more of a burden. $1000 emergency fund is not enough!!
@brianafranklin81644 жыл бұрын
Andre Brown I completely agree. I’m going to start the avalanche method while simultaneously saving. I’m on my own and if something happens I need way more than $1,000 in my account because when it rains it pours.
@mariohall26314 жыл бұрын
I totally agree. $1000 is not enough especially if it's going to take 2 years or more to pay off debt. I need at least 3 months expenses saved.
@kingbran9232 жыл бұрын
If it’s going to take over two years to pay off debt you might need a better income, a savings account will only do so much if you don’t have a good enough incomr

When I was working on my masters I had to take student loans out and was getting no help financially. I was making 13K a year at my job 4 years ago. The only way I saw to survive was to live off my credit cards. Now I’m 21k in with my ccs and 24k with my student loan (was 31k 3 years ago). Circumstances happen.

Breanna Burress Without asking for any increases in my limit , my credit card has a $25K limit! I’ve had the card for about 40 years. I don’t think banks should increase it if it’s not requested. For some folks it’s too tempting. I pay my card in full most of the time , except for a few times when I made large purchases , then I paid it off in 3 months. My credit score averages 845. I’m aiming for 850!

Most credit cards have an interest rate of 16-17% and that's for those with good credit! If the caller takes 3 years to pay off her $40,000 crdit card balance, which is pretty good for such a hefty balance and considering her household income, she would have spent $10,500 in interest payments. So even at a decent payment rate she in the end would still end up losing that $10,000 after 3 years. I would try and knock out those credit card debt as soon as possible. That's the true killer in her budget. I would also look for a way to transfer the balance to a lower rate credit card if possible so the interest doesn't kill me.

@kingbran9232 жыл бұрын
70K is probably the gross pay, it’s not that crazy. We really don’t know their tax situation so you can’t know for sure, but it’s probably a good assumption.

If I owe $1000 on credit cards and I have $1000 in savings it’s like I borrowed $1000 on a credit card to put in savings. Why does this make sense to anyone? A kindergartener could tell me the problem with that reasoning.

@John Lester thats exactly what it is. Its like those folk who dont want to sell a car they're upside down on. Selling it shows them how dumb of a decision it is. People dont feel the pain until its time to actually pay it back and lose the money they have.

A buddy of mine listened to his advice on his next car purchase. Instead of lease like he has been doing his entire life decided to purchase a used car with a 10k loan. Well problem after problem and then it got hit (not his fault) and now its nearly worthless but yet he owes 10k on it. Dave is ok for people who can't manage finances.
@kingbran9232 жыл бұрын
Dave has never told anyone to borrow money. If your friend was actually following Dave’s advice, he would have paid for the car with cash, then he wouldn’t owe anyone and the insurance payout would be his to keep for another vehicle.

It’s better to buy a new unit than pat hundreds to ‘fix’ it. Up front, it’s a lot, but a new unit will ‘repay’ itself over time.
