Thank you glad someone said this. However... if your debt is charged at 5%, and you can invest your savings for a higher interest rate... don’t pay off your debt? I feel like Dave would never give that advice, but if you’ve got mountains of student loans at a low interest rate but have tens of thousands saved... you’re probably much better off investing than paying off debt with your savings.
@RKmndo
@RKmndo 4 жыл бұрын
@@noahmcdaniel4920 Right now you're probably best off working on a full emergency fund and ensuring that multiple income sources are solid. The economy and markets are volatile. If your e-fund and income are solid, I'd consider doing both loan payment and investing. If your debt rates can go up, I'd put more money towards paying them off ASAP. Rates aren't likely to get much lower. Investing early in life is also a good idea. If your employer matches a 401K, get at least the full match. It's an automatic 100% gain on your pre-tax contribution at that point in time. Putting in double their match is auto 50% gain. Triple their match is auto 33% gain. Quadruple their match is auto 25% gain. Pentuple their match is auto 20% gain. Put that money into a fund that typically makes good gains. Some people lose out by not putting their contributions to work. Live frugally, grow your income, and pay off your unsecured debt, especially high/variable interest debt on things that are not appreciating/cashflowing assets. Depreciating liabilities and high-interest debt are bad.

Depending on the debt, you should use your savings to pay off the debt, then pay yourself back with interest at the rate you would have paid the bank. Two benefits, you're debt free and working on a repayment plan that makes you richer.

A 250 dollar motor was most likely either the blower in the house or the condenser fan outside. Replacing them is normal. That's like replacing your car because the battery went out. Now that motor will probably go another 7 to 10 years. I would rather spend 250 on the HVAC every few months than drop 7000 or more into a new one.

Exactly! That's bananas! Why are they worried about a "what-if" problem with an HVAC unit when they are likely paying 20% APR on $40k! Even if its super likely to happen in the next few years whats the worst thing they have to do? Put a few thousand back on a credit card when it does happen? Assuming it was originally going to take a few years to pay off that $10k in CC debt, if they just avoid an HVAC issue for a year that's close to $2k in interest payments avoided. They need to light a fire under their rears and get moooovvving scraping every penny.

Being in the industry, you can fix your own home a/c system. Most stuff that goes out is electrical parts, which can be bought on amazon. Outdoor fan motor will run you $160, change it yourself. Same with the start/run capacitor. Look this stuff up on youtube people. The only thing you would need to call a tech out on is if the unit has a leak or the compressor goes out. The rest you can do yourself with a little research. You will save a lot of money.

Try to get a 3 to 6 month emergency fund after you pay off the car. Dont stop funding your retirement or investing to do it. Just put some in it when you can. Make a separate place for it where you wont touch it. Dont touch it unless something BAD BAD happens. It will be there if you switch jobs and insurance doesn't start for 3 months, or you move out of state for a better job. It might take you several years to do this. In the end it gives you security. One day you might make it a years worth of expenses when your married have a family. Just think about. It's only a suggestion.

I would never take a large sum of savings to drop on debt unless I had the income to replace it quickly. Debt can be paid off over time and unless it is killing you with the minimum payments or whatever is due, I would say to pay large sums towards the debt and pay it off way quicker. I lost my job and needed my savings account to live on. Had I tried to drop all of that money on a bill, I would have been broke. Bills don't care about you when you're down with no money.

I have four window units in my house. If one of them craps out I know exactly how much the repair bill, $179 at walmart. Central air sucks. In the meantime I have five spare units out in the shed, so potentially that repair bill could be zero and just 30 minutes of time switching out a window unit and sealing it up again.

im in a similar position.... i want to pay off my car which right now is at $13k, i would be refinancing it to lower the interest rate and i have about $9k saved up.... i have student loans but im still going to school so no point in paying it off when the amount will continue to increase. i like having an emergency fund so i thought of paying a good less than half on my car and still have a good amount left..

Breanna Burress Without asking for any increases in my limit , my credit card has a $25K limit! I’ve had the card for about 40 years. I don’t think banks should increase it if it’s not requested. For some folks it’s too tempting. I pay my card in full most of the time , except for a few times when I made large purchases , then I paid it off in 3 months. My credit score averages 845. I’m aiming for 850!

Most credit cards have an interest rate of 16-17% and that's for those with good credit! If the caller takes 3 years to pay off her $40,000 crdit card balance, which is pretty good for such a hefty balance and considering her household income, she would have spent $10,500 in interest payments. So even at a decent payment rate she in the end would still end up losing that $10,000 after 3 years. I would try and knock out those credit card debt as soon as possible. That's the true killer in her budget. I would also look for a way to transfer the balance to a lower rate credit card if possible so the interest doesn't kill me.
