I used the Tube when I visited London last year. Very smooth and clean. Had no problems. Cheap too. I also noticed that there seemed to be security in most buildings in London, including fast food restaurants. I could not understand that, as nearly every business including banks don't have security guards where I live.
@lazrseagull5411 ай бұрын
It's anything but cheap! From the evening standard: "The Tube has the most expensive fares of any metro in the world, according to Transport for London's own research". In Germany, it costs €49/month to use all bus, tram, tube, monorail, as well as local and regional trains in the whole country. It's a shame that in 2023, only 4 British cities even have some kind of tube network, while France has 8, Spain has over 10 and Germany has over 20. The biggest European cities without a tube network are: 1: Belgrade (currently building their first 2 lines to open by the end of the decade) 2: Birmingham (no plans) 3: Manchester (no plans) 4: Leeds (no plans). Northern British cities are notoriously neglected by Westminster and deserve much better.
@John-s7s8s11 ай бұрын
I thought it was cheap for what we got. We used the oyster card and traveled all over without paying much. I have been to other metros in Europe. Paris, Berlin, Prague, Vienna, Budapest. All of them cheap in my book with Prague being the cheapest as it was free being over 65 years old. Budapest was very cheap. Here in Washington D.C. I found it to be the most expensive, but still a bargain as you don't have to hassle with parking, with parking being very expensive. @@lazrseagull54

'The City Of London' couldn't be taken by William The Conquerer. This is why it is an independent 'corporation' within the UK with its own police force, laws and even an anonymous 'rememberancer' person that sits in on parliament listening to the days goings on and then reporting back to the 'corporation' for any necessary lobbying. The 'City Of London' is the new 'British Empire' location primarily in the dodgy finance industry after all the overseas territories gained back their independence. It know deals with tax havens, eurodollars and shady financial instruments...apparently allegedly, so we must protect it at all costs.

@@Krispysquare Although I was wrong about it not being part of the UK (it is), The City of London / Square Mile is different to what most people consider to be London (everything within the M25) and the 32 boroughs that constitutes it. The City of London is its own county with more powers than a borough. Hence why it has a different police service. It's the City of London police not the Metropolitan Police and it has a different Mayor to the rest of London, called a Lord Mayor. (Not Sadiq Khan) Where as, Sadiq Khan is technically a leader of a combined authority of the 32 boroughs, the Lord Mayor of the City of London is in charge of the City of London only.

From Wikipedia….. The City of London Corporation, officially and legally the Mayor and Commonalty and Citizens of the City of London, is the municipal governing body of the City of London, the historic centre of London and the location of much of the United Kingdom's financial sector. In 2006, the name was changed from Corporation of London as the corporate body needed to be distinguished from the geographical area to avoid confusion with the wider London local government, the Greater London Authority.[4] Both businesses and residents of the City, or "Square Mile", are entitled to vote in City elections, and in addition to its functions as the local authority-analogous to those undertaken by the 32 boroughs that administer the rest of the Greater London region-it takes responsibility for supporting the financial services industry and representing its interests.[5] The corporation's structure includes the Lord Mayor, the Court of Aldermen, the Court of Common Council, and the Freemen and Livery of the City. The "Liberties and Customs" of the City of London are guaranteed in Magna Carta's clause IX, which remains in statute
