You pick up on all the teeny tiny nuances that make all the difference: stronger headings that my brain can easily see, more contrast, ease of drag and drop, annnndddd things that are annoying like having to click to see what time a task is set for. You are very fair, you're not nitpicking, you're just pointing out all the little things that are actually big things (see what I did there? things..) I appreciate the way you teach and explain with your side-by-side visuals. Very informative. Keep up the good work.

Things3 definitely has a superior UI. They did a beautiful job with the design of the app. However, todoist has the functionality I really need. I will say that Todoist’s Ui on iOS and iPadOS has improved a lot, bringing it almost in like with Things3. But the thing I really can’t live without is Todoist’s natural language processing. It’s one of the things that brought me back to the app after using Things and then Apple Reminders for a couple of years

Things is awesome. I just switched from OmniFocus after 10 years. OmniFocus became much too complex, I needed to create separate perspectives to handle that complexity and those perspectives added additional complexity. Also, it crashed way too often. Things looks much cleaner, it gives you much better and more focused views, and the UI is 10 years ahead. What a joy!

Same here, my task management process is no longer an exercise in ambivalent frustration of custom perspectives and horrendously cluttered interfaces, full of icons, dots, lines, drop-down arrow’s and indentations etc as I used folders to imitate areas. I absolutely love things, it truly is a joy to use, Im still not used to the feeling of looking forward to organizing my life. I love areas and project headings 😌

Things 3 has both start and due dates, and uncompleted to dos are automatically rolled over to the next day. I'm kind of confused how you would work around having only one date characterizing each task.

Nice concise comparison. I just started using Todoist on Mac, they have some beta updates I’m using that look like they are cribbing some of the nice plusses from Things 3. I think I’ll stay with that for now and see where it goes, but this was useful information in deciding!

Interesting video! Do you always use the white theme or is that just for the video? Especially with the dark theme I find the differences even bigger and I like Things much better there. Btw. I miss the integration with Fantastical. This works great with Todoist (but also with Apple Reminders). However, there are different opinions whether you should have tasks also in the calendar ;) Therefore, this is not necessarily a missing feature for everyone. You missed the drag handle in Todoist ;) Its only visible if you hover over the task :P Oh... the native Things App has of course also the advantage that you can simply drag tasks into other apps! This is not possible with the Todoist web app.

The main reason I wouldn’t switch to Todoist: $50/year. Yes, I know they have a free tier and that’s great, but it’s just a little too limited for my needs. I despise suckscriptions. Things was expensive, but I bought it once and that’s it. Plus, it really is (for me) the best of breed. Like you, I get restless from time to time and try all the main alternatives, but invariably I come back to Things.

I've used both off and on for over a decade. If Things had attachments and smart lists I'd never leave. (My third request would be a web app which will never come :/ ) Todoist is best I think among web apps. It's gotten better but still needs aesthetic improvements and simplification, imo

It’s a good question. For me it’s very simple. No true due dates or start dates just reminders and no ability to recur on completion. In reminders there are no start or due dates. Just reminders as the name says. That’s an issue for me. The other functionality I use a lot is recurring tasks where the task recurs when I complete the last task. For example. The AC filter should be changed every 3 months but I may not complete that task actually on the day it’s due. So count the next 3 months from the day I actually change the filter. There are probably other nits but those are the main Issues for me.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts with this video and the last (where you did the switch to Todoist)! I used Todoist for years, then moved to Things which I’ve now been using for years… I’m considering trying Todoist again, mostly for the ability to complete recurring tasks early and the natural language parsing. We’ll see how that goes (if I actually try the switch)!

This app has a great, clean appearance, but it can be frustrating that it doesn't recognize date in inputs. Additionally, it's important to mention that the app doesn't allow for reminders based on location, which is a useful feature. Although I love the way the app looks, the better task input and location reminders is what's keeping me with Todoist so far.

What are you all talking about? drag & drop works in both the browser and the app, hover over a task and click on the 6 dots in front of it.... use the "upcoming" view and you can drag an item to today/tomorrow/etc and it updates the due date... and who uses widgets??????????

I like the setup here (Morning, Work and Home). I was wondering - how do you handle priorities in Things? That is something I use often in Todoist (p1, p2 , p3). Also, with your work area - what if you have different clients? How would you go about setting something like that up? Great video! 👍🏻

I made a series of tags in Things that I use to denote task priority (Priority low, medium, high). It’s not quite as elegant as Todoist, but it gets the job done.

Note the reason why you can’t drag when you were in today’s view in Todoist…because you had a grouping. Very poor feature. Same thing when in a filter view. This is the type of missing feature where Todoist can’t beat Things 3. Also, it worth to say in Todoist for example if you check two tasks, the undo will just works for the latest. In Todoist when grouping, even if the group header appears, there is the group beside each task. Same thing for today indication when in today view. Sum up, the only thing Todoist beat Things is cross plateform, sharing, attachments and filter. I can live without those features and experience the cartartic effect of Things.

I’m searching for the perfect I-Phone Compatible Project Management/Tasks Management Software focused on repetitive events. It would offer a template option(s) with automated sequential sub tasks to “X” number of days/hours before and/or after. A task example “Post Agenda” 3 days before meeting. Is there anything out there?

Interesting. But it is clearly subjective topics. What about the Collaboration feature (missing in Things, and clearly you may live alone or work solo, but I need to share projects with my wife or my coworkers) or the Natural Language (missing in Things) or the Filter feature? Those are killer-feature for me. The integration in Fantastical also is an amazing plus for Todoist imho.

4:14 I respectfully disagree. It is the worst thing in the world at that exact moment :) it takes me away from the task at hand and the context-switching annoys me. Processing an inbox with 100 things in Todoist takes so long even with shortcuts. This is why I went back to Things 3 as well. It is so much more keyboard friendly :)

I think that u copied your stuff from things3 into todoist, and that is a mistake because they both have different philosophies. You can drag and drop in todoist but you need to be in a project. The projects in todoist are like the areas in things so it is not the same thing. I like both apps and now im using things3 for my personal task but the main complain i have is that if you dont have a mac u cant use them in others computers, and you can`t set multiples reminders for the same tasks so i wish they change that

I want to like Things but it feels so… closed. Like, I want to merge my todos between Obsidian and things, so I can have all the tasks I’ve accomplished for that day when I revisit my notes. Well I can’t do that with Things, it feels separated and sandboxed. I decided to Switch to Todoist today to try, because they have an Obsidian plugin. So yeah if Things have integrations in Things 4 I’d happily rebuy it.

going to try Things & Todoist together. been using Todoist (paid version) for 4 months and I love it, but i don't like how i can't keep Upcoming dates separated from everyday things to big projects. that might be a problem on my end that no app can solve, hence i want to try Things for everyday things 😂 and Todoist for big project todos (things for daily things and todoist for project todos is a nice way for me to think about it too 😂)

Sorry to say Things is beautiful and awesome and I wish I could use it but... the developers do not care about real people. They refuse to develop for any platform but Apple. They even refuse to allow any online webpage access. Technology needs to be flexible and meet people where they are. I use Apple products most of the time, but often on the road I need to use some other computer via the Web. I do not think adding a web interface is difficult, I think the developers simply do not care.
