The time has come, I'm splitting my carbon fiber cowling! I'm also working to adding in lights, a night vision camera, and a NACA duct for airflow. The cowling has been one of the most labor intensive projects of Scrappy, but we are making progress!

There is hardly a thing in that plane that hasn't had a lot of thought put into it. The thoughts have everything to do with solving or avoiding some problem. I think Scrappy is going to work well, be easy to work on, and perform extremely well. A world class machine built as one man's toy. Because he can. Hey Mike! I've been following along for the last few years now, and I have to say your technical breakdowns and live demonstrations are invaluable. It just goes to show that you don't need multi million dollar auto-claves and pre-preg to make quality parts. Everything you've shown us over the years has helped me go from making small parts, to replicating almost every body panel on my race car in CF. I wanted to say thank you for all the time and effort it takes to make these videos, and to say thank you to your family as well. When properly implemented, a NACA duct allows air to flow into an internal duct, often for cooling purposes, with a minimal disturbance to the flow. The design was originally called a submerged inlet, since it consists of a shallow ramp with curved walls recessed into the exposed surface of a streamlined body, such as an aircraft. This type of flush inlet generally cannot achieve the larger ram pressures and flow volumes of an external design, and so is rarely used for the jet engine intake application for which it was originally designed, such as the North American YF-93 and Short SB.4 Sherpa. It is, however, common for piston engine and ventilation intakes.

Mike, I now have a tip to drill eggs instead of cracking them.. 🤣lol the tape idea sure does work so you don't have index marks directly on part, & the soft tape allows the point of the handheld drill to center w/out slipping & skipping.. I have done this before, of course used width of tape to measure spacing too, using a strip of tape as a template to properly phase drill holes, then tape strips perpendicular.. looked like railroad tracks### (or plaid sometimes)but gave me absolute "visual security" in the process.. what I call "I see what I'm doing before I cut insurance" 🤠👍

16:09 i usually put a thin stainless washer around the screw holes which has been thinned out at the edges (think donut saucer). It's extremely robust. I even crashed my bike twice, and the screw holes didn't rip as they usually do when you have factory or aftermarket CF. TIP: on the multitool, you can get an old (or new) blade, and cut it, centered, to a thinner profile, then if you twist it in the lock at 90 degrees from the tool, you can use your palm as a rest on the part you cut, and you get extremely precise control over the cut. I mean, surgery grade control. Source: as we all know, these machines came the medical grade bone saws. I actually used a bone saw before i had a multi tool and it worked best in that orientation (because of the half moon blade, look like a saw tooth scythe, i think it's for cutting between ribs or something) so i figured i should try it with the multitool as well, and it does.

Just that cowling is a masterpiece, but what makes this so, so great is your passion about what you do and to share it with us! I am super stoked (...) to watch the rest, keep'e'em comin', please! I wouldn''t mind more time lapses of work being done but whatever you do it's so much fun and inspiring to watch so that's the main thing!

I appreciate the way you explain your techniques more than once and in more than one way. A few videos back you explained how you marked the bolt locations with Torque Seal. I didn't quite get what you were doing or why, but this time around it makes perfect sense. Thank you. Not only is the project fascinating, but the sharing of tricks of the trade really does advance the whole world.

This will probably set a new standard for cowling designs! The Comanche I flew sure didn't have that kind of thought go into the design of its cowl. You've obviously put in a lot of computer time into getting the most out of the airflow! 👍🇺🇸🌬

Another great video Mike! Just laying it out there for when Scrappy is up and running. How about you set sights on setting a speed record for electric powered flight? Should fall right into your wheel house with slippery light weight aircraft construction and battery power. Would make a great project and video series and broaden your reach of viewers. Who knows, may lead to a whole new class of aircraft at Reno Races. Love your work and hope to see more of it.

I've been watching this build since the first piece of metal was cut from the factory Cub frame. It's hard to believe at this point that there is any factory parts left in this build. Very excited to see this get off the ground for the first time.

Man i know im not the only one looking impatiently forward to scrappy rotation. And being able to observe the thought process as mike establishes the envelope rather explores and fine tunes scrappy capabilities .

If you have a forward looking night vision camera, you could fit two infra red spotlights under your aircraft, one at the back, one at the front, which could be angled such that they would shine ahead of your aircraft and the two lights would coincide (overlap) only when you reach, Say 50 feet AGL. A line on your screen could then show 30,20,10 feet to contact.

Sure Glad you are documenting all this. I used to build fiberglass race car bodies back in the 60's and 70's pretty much the same way. (Carbon Fiber came later.) I''ve been trying to teach my Son, the Drag Racer, some body building tricks. I have bought him a lot of tools and tricky stuff, Clecoes, Camlocks, panel clamps, bead rollers... ECT to help him with his latest 1800 HP, 200 MPG Drag Car. Your videos help me explain the processes to him. And I'm an airplane nut as well, so I'm like the guy said, "Watching this as my Saurtday Morning Cartoon/ Entertainment. You ever need to land that thing in North Central Texas come see us. 7TS0 airport is in my back yard. We have a big talent pool of Experimental Plane Builder as Neighbors.

I’m really interested in your controlled pressure/airflow in the cowling, a variable compressible fluid flow analysis. Excellent video as usual Mike.

Your videos are awesome. I worked in the aviation industry for 46 years 22 1/2 in the AF the rest as GSE supervisor at an aircraft modification facility in Texas. I am seeing one engineer do the work of 20 when watching your videos. I could tell you some stories of engineers some just made me wonder only two of the many made the grade in my book. Like you they set the bar at a super high level. God bless you and your family. Have a wonderful week.
