Real leather doesn’t peel. The high-quality new vegan leathers like mushroom, corn, and apple, also do not peel. The only bags I have ever had in my life that did peel were inexpensive PVC beach bags, and those took longer than 20 minutes before they peeled. This is disgraceful. It’s time to find a new fashion house to love. You can still love Coco and the history of the house, but this isn’t Chanel anymore.

@@ryeofoatmeal Not every luxury house has poor quality. Ferragamo uses beautiful leather, so does Fendi and Hermes. Even LV has nice leather products, their canvas items can be hit or miss. Disgraceful that Chanel is taking people for a ride, they've gotten beyond greedy.

Hi Dacob, I work with leather. It's not the leather that is peeling, it's whatever they used to color the leather. A dye doesn't peel but a leather paint will. Paints are used to give vibrant colors.

@@SuperDacob It's hard to tell from a macro image but I would think that Chanel only uses genuine leather. Leather like human skin has pores, so I assume that's what you are seeing, Leather needs to be treated with some type of acetone solution before painting to make the paint stick. If it's not done properly you will see peeling. (Been there done that.) I hope this helps.

Hi Dacob. You’re so well informed and a huge Chanel fan, I’m so surprised you bought this bag in this style with a metallic sheen. Before I go on, I’m shocked Chanel would even make this style bag with metallic anything. It’s why so many people are having quality issues with this particular style. Maybe they were very hopeful. Firstly, Chanel bags with metallic colors are EXTREMELY sensitive, even when they’re structured. It’s the nature of the paint/color/ whatever the process they use to create the metallic layer/leather on top. I personally would never buy metallic colored bags from Chanel for that reason. The 22 Bag has no business having this type of coating because of the hobo, slouchy wrinkled shape. I would go back to Chanel because this is unacceptable. I’ve been a huge Chanel fan and buying their bags for several years now. I admit I’ve seen plenty of quality issues with their bags (crooked flaps, cc’s) which is why I’d always search for a perfect version of whatever bag it was I wanted. And I’ve never had issues with any of the bags I have because of that. However, with the exception of the 22 Bag in metallic colors, I will say that I, along with many other Chanel lovers and SA’s, have noticed that the quality of the bags has definitely increased noticeably the past year or two. The bags I’ve purchased in the past couple years are particularly outstanding in quality. The leather is so thick and supple, I haven’t noticed crooked flaps, etc.

7 years ago Dacob did an excellent video explaining all the ways that this industry is manipulative, exploitative, abusive and greedy, and that he was going to boycott it. Now, all these years later he continues to buy these purses from Chanel despite knowing about the huge quality fails that come with them. Despite the decline in quality Chanel sales are up 50% this year. This has become an abusive relationship.

With the widely publicized complaints of product quality, I wonder if the company's latest business practices will soon be publicized. Did they outsource to reduce production costs? Genuine leather today is not what it used to be. ANY leather marked Genuine leather is to be low quality. There are a few videos on YT going in detail on this very subject. BTW, Happy Birthday, sorry this happened to you. You deserve better than Chanel. I have been enjoying my full grain cowhide vintage Coach bags thats close to 50 years old and as fresh as the day they were purchased, I swear Dacob if you find one of those gems you would rant and rave about it! This is why vintage Chanel bags are highly sought after. The leather and workmanship we're so much better. I have a vintage Chanel backpack that I bought in the 90's and paid just over a $1000 (possibly less, don't remember) That same backpack is selling on designer resale sites for $6000. If I knew then what I know now I would've bought several as investments.

27:27 yes, Hermes clearly states in their website that ALL of their leathers are full grain leather , You will get veins and stretch marks that make the object unique. If this 22 was an Hermes bag, it would be made in swift leather, with suade interior. That's a leather bag.

There is a new 'Pilo' line at Hermès. It is super soft to the touch, has 2 D rings to attach any bag strap. It is made of Milo lambskin inside and outside with leather drawstrings. It is a fantastic bag/pouch in my opinion but time will tell on the durability.

Nowhere in the universe of Chanel is stated that their leather is full grain. We just expect that to be the reality, since we want to excuse ourselves for paying the prices. This is a type of leather coated with pvc. Caviar leather is a highly treated leather . There is no way to know what level of leather was used before stamping the grains on it. Chanel is ver vague on its website. Chanel does give refunds if the item is purchased on a department store.

Y i k e s. I think my head would actually explode if I spent that much on a bag that started falling apart this fast. The more I watch, the more I'm inclined to never buy Chanel. That said- I've done leatherwork for many years and I HAVE seen painted leather peel like this. Your bag does look like real leather, but for it to start peeling this quickly they had to have used a poor quality paint + application technique. Absolutely unacceptable for the price, I would definitely take it back.

My YSL bag has been used so much over 3 years and I still do not have even one scratch. I love the Chanel reissue, it’s on my wish list but Chanel has become a huge joke. Sorry.

Absolutely dynamite and the colour is fabulous. Honestly the second fail at Chanel would be enough for me to say, goodbye. For the money that is unacceptable. I am not sure why they are placing synthetic materials on their bags. Friction would produce a wearing down of leather not flaking or peeling. How has quality control not tested the material out for durability? I think Chanel is at a point in which they believe their customers are willing to buy anything from them so they produce low grade items for the general public and anything worth having is kept for a specific clientele. If you want to match the likes of Hermes stay in one lane and stop pumping out bags. Stick to what you know as a brand and stop trying to clutter the environment with broken down jalopies and remain true to the art of Chanel. This company needs a new direction and fast.

I recently found a full leather bag for $150 at nordstroms and its absolutely stunning and I love it. I had a Saint Laurent Lou camera bag in that same color and same finish, and when I went to sell it, Rebag thought it had been painted. It’s the same type of finish. I don’t know how it was colored but it’s different than traditional dye. It’s like a coating over the top of the leather.

I have a Channel tomato red bag from the 1980's and I never looked after it and travelled with it all the time. It's still fine on the outside though the interior is not so good. The quality now is terrible. Also a lot of "luxury" bags used to be made in HK and China though I'm not sure if this still happens. Years ago when they were made in China I was told by someone in the industry that very few designer bags were really well made. Bottega and Hermes were exceptions as they were only made respectively in Italy and France and really were beautifully made and of course handmade.

I don't think it is full-grain leather, what's peeled was probably the color coating on the leather. The vibrant color didn't come from its tanning process.

I have a replica Gabrielle Hobo, and it’s much higher quality than the original. I wear it every day, it gets put on the ground, I stuff it full, and I just basically don’t baby it- and it has no scratches or other signs of wear. After comparing the authentic vs replicas, I won’t be buying authentic Chanel until they fix the quality issues.

The tortoiseshell accented Chanel bag you should’ve got that that is gorgeous one-of-a-kind also the hombre Dior bag that is right up your alley! They had really good prices on all their Chanel bags I could not believe it! America up charges everything! 😢

I think that in some countries, you would be entitled to a full refund, as the bag is faulty.... It's not like you want to refund it because you changed your mind: Chanel have put you in a position where you HAVE TO bring it back to them.

Happy Birthday Dacob! So sorry about this! Maybe have it authenticated? I have heard that some people are returning replicas in the store and then the store resells the bag thinking it is real. It is a long shot but who knows. I would definitely return it for a full refund and buy another beautiful bag but a different brand. I just bought a beige Fendi baguette and I love it. The quality of the leather is awesome!

i heard at least 20 different stories on the bad quality of the 22bag wich is a shame considering that they want it to br the new it bag, even calling it 22 bag-if a bag is called by the year it came out you know its meant to stay for a while so its a shame that they dont put more effort in the quality of it. i have seen the lettering fall of because its attachted porly, i have seen massive cracking on the piping from open and closing etc but this is next level bad quality!! they problably used a very bad dye to coloring the leather and coated it with some synthetik stuff to make it „robust“ but all those mixtures seem to chemically react to each other making it peel that easily and heavily, like the leather dont want to connect with the dye at all :( very unacceptable! at that point chanel isnt top notch for me anymore. i mean i love it and will still care for the brand and collect pieces but when im honest i have to say that other houses like saint laurent or givenchy have waaaaaaay better quality making the bags feel and look more luxurious than chanel and you dont have nearly as much quality issues with them-millions of chanel horror stories out there, but barely 1 or 2 about givenchy…

There are some helpful, constructive comments on here. But also some unnecessarily judgmental ones like 'told you so'. (Although I may be mistaken in the tone I am reading into them). Could we remember that Dacob has an eye for design and a time honoured love of this brand. So it is understandable that this bag would appeal. He loved it when he first wore it. I'm prob too emotional, but when you buy a luxury bag, there is also a certain je ne sais quoi about how it feels on you. Yes the quality should be better but I can understand the appeal and the dilemma he now faces

I would be absolutely PISSED. All of my bags are leather, other than a couple of canvas bags and NONE of my leather bags have ever done this. My ysl and Bvlgari bags don't have not even 1 imperfection on them after 2 years. There's no way this bag is real leather. If you really want to still buy chanel, id recommend buying vintage.

I think this is a special glazing effect and it will peel off in time but it is actually full grain leather inside the bag if somebody has enough money to cut one open and see that’s the only way we would find out other than that you have to go with what Chanel is saying and they are saying it is full grain leather!

Hi, Dacob! Happy birthday!! Sorry that happened with your bag. Between full grain leather and composite leather there are few levels. For instance the majority YSL bags are plein corrigee pigmentee (sorry for mistakes in French), at the same time YSL lou puffer made of lambskin is full grain aniline. I have 22 bronze color, worn it for 4-5 times to work, so far no wear, but your videos make me scared.

I have a leather bag with a similar coating. I've had it for nearly 10 years with no issues. However, I would imagine that rubbing a metal chain on the bag would destroy it in short order. Definitely a design flaw if actual use was not taken into account.

Shame you cant get it tested. I dont think its just Chanel. I had a Saint Laurent tote I got from Harrods in London & one of the carry straps cracked & snapped in half only a couple of months of me having it. I was very careful with it too. It looked like there was leather coating over some white material stuff. It was advertised as a leather bag too, but it clearly wasn’t 100% leather. Harrods gave me a full refund in the end but it was shocking to find it was a leather coated strap. It was about 2 yrs ago. Ive got a few pics of it on my insta.

Sorry to hear that. I think it is leather though. But I think it is heavily coated with dyes. That can make it peel off. People says it don't happened to Coach but it does too. Majority of my Coach doesn't but I have 3 from their store that rubbed off. I noticed it on my very light or dark colors of my bags. It has warranty or return it. Good luck

If it really is leather, then I presume that it is not the leather that is peeling, but whatever paint/plastic like coating that has been applied on it to give it that color. It seems that Chanel did not even bother to test this before making it.

I wouldn't give $20 for that bag. Luxury bags have gone to shit the last couple years. I only buy Vintage!! The companies got greedy and let quality go out the door. All the price increases don't equal the work they are putting in the bags. LV is another brand I quit buying new a few years ago. I purchased the bags for 30 years and watched them go down the last few years. Just because it has a good name doesn't make a bag quality. I would demand my money back for that bag!!!!!!! It’s like patent leather. It has a synthetic rubber coating to give it that glossy look.. The edges of the flat part of the chain will inevitably rub & carve that coating off. If they use a heavier coating then it won’t have the soft subtle supple look & feel. It just comes with the territory,so to speak.
