Really sorry that you are going through this right now William. One thing I’ve learned in the last 9 years is that you can’t “out improve” these sorts of comments and the sorts of people making them. When I started Kurzgesagt I was alone and it was also just fun and exciting to just upload stuff. But a small percentage of people were mean, waved off all the work put into them and pointed directly at all my insecurities. “They are probably right” I thought (and to be fair, some of them were!). So I tried to do better and put even more time into the videos, did more research, worked harder. As time went on I began to hire people, improved our processes further, did even more research. We started to talk to experts for every video, began documenting the sources, put hundreds of hours into our research process. Thousands of hours into each video. And what did it do on the negativity front? Nothing. It changed nothing. The amount and tone of mean comments that just wave away all of our effort is still the same. Constructive criticism is important of course and we learn from it - but often it is not constructive but judgy and nitpicky or mean or waving away all our work from their armchairs. It took me a long time to accept that there is nothing I can do to change that but doing so made KZbin fun again. It is much easier to focus on the 98% that love what we do, nowadays. Your content is great and you are such a genuine creator, its sad to see you are having such a bad time. I have no smart thing to end this comment on. Just: It is possible to get back to a point where it is fun again and you can focus on what you want to do. - Philipp (edit: words and formating)

Yup. Same thing on my channel -- even 99% good... there's still 1% bad that you can't just not notice. After reading half a million comments on my channel... well that's still 5,000 negative ones (a full length novel worth!). I thought it'd get better when I grew a team, and wouldn't care so much about comments on my teams videos that I'm not even in... nope, now that negativity hits twice as hard because it's like attacking my family. It's certainly not weak. We're just human. Thank you for making this video, Will. Not many people get it, but I think this video helps explain the reality that faces most youtubers.

The people that view the world as a negative until it becomes a positive instead of seeing the world as a positive until it becomes a negative are the people that act this way. It's sad, but most of them don't feel they get their share of attention, and so they act out in this way. The only negative criticism I have is you made me laugh so hard with the phone case video that I embarrassed myself in front of my family Christmas Eve, laughing like a maniac at a man in a dress, hitting himself in the groin with an automated wooden pole. Edit; On a more serious note, I greatly value the contributions you have made and will hopefully continue to make. I'm struggling, like many, and to have a genuine laugh in a terrible time is incredibly invaluable. The negative comments are probably from broken people, beat down by life or butts for brains, and I hope they don't continue to live rent free in your head. But I value your sanity and peace more than my laughs, and hope that whatever you choose to do, it continues to make you smile along with the people around you!

I appreciate this video a lot. I think one reason that negative comments bother me so much is that I can't really imagine a situation where I would leave a negative comment on a video. I think I often make the mistake of thinking that other people on the internet share similar values in that regard, so knowing that, whenever I get a negative comment, it feels like whatever I made must have pushed that person to such an extreme place or that I am just so annoying that listening to me talk got them upset. IF I were to leave a negative comment, it'd be on a video that is hateful and harmful (but even then I probably wouldn't as I wouldn't wanna give it engagement), so when I get them, I think a part of my brain assumes that whoever making the comment is a rational person that I pushed over the edge. And obviously most people who say shitty things don't give it a second thought, but still it sticks.
@owentwo9823 жыл бұрын
I completely feel that. I always try to ignore negative comments and arguments, but it can hurt so deeply that someone would take the time to write out something hateful about me, or other people, considering I could never bring myself to do the same. I feel a lot for other people, so I have a habit of taking on other's anger, too, and blaming myself. I guess the best thing to do is remember that, those people that are hurting you, are doing it because they've been hurt, too. It's not about you, it's about them, and their inner struggle. It helps me understand it a bit, and get by and not internalize it so much.

Hey man I don't comment on your channel but I am subed, anyway, you aren't wrong to feel the way you do, you are fine man, it's them that's in the wrong, most people in life you meet aren't really people, sure they look like them, sound like them, but they are fake, hallow, and most things about them aren't real, they live fake lives, needing to take constant pictures of themselves to share to validate themselves through what another person feels, these people arent worth anything, they are like a rock in the road you trip over, nothing more and should never be validated with attention, because what they have become isn't real, they even know it, and when they catch even the slightest sense that someone sees who they really are, they lash out like animals, because of how ashamed they are of themselves and what they have become. So never change you, always be you, never try to be anything else, the real you is far more interesting, talented, kind, happy, and the best part it's real. It isn't just "full time KZbinrs". When my son was 6 he found Mario Maker 2. It quickly became his favorite game. He enjoyed making levels and he was surprisingly quick at grasping the concepts...but he made levels you'd kind of expect from a 6 year old who also just found out they can make levels and worlds themselves. A week or so after I bought it, I walked back in to the living room from the kitchen and caught him reading comments for one of his levels (I didn't even know there *were* comments). What I saw hurt me to my core. My 6 year old son had put his whole heart into this thing and the first comment he ever read on any thing he'd ever created and put into the world was "this level sucks and so do you"....and he was just staring at it trying to comprehend it all. He asked me why people were mean and I didn't really have a good response other than to say that not everyone he meets will care about him and that he needs to understand that some of them will say mean things just to hurt his feelings. Then we talked about how to deal with it and ended up banning the social aspect of games until he was a little older. He was fine obviously and he still loves to make levels and he's even moved on to Game Builder Garage now lol I guess that moment just stuck with me....and probably way more than it did him. I'd never experienced it from that perspective before. Since that moment, I've tried really hard to not be that hateful person to anyone online or in real life. I think we're losing our humanity in the increasingly detached nature of our methods of communication. For most of our history, if you said something to hurt someone you had to physically watch it happen. Watching someone hurt is painful in and of itself so most people would quickly learn why they shouldn't do it...and the ones who didn't learn caught a fist and learned the hard way lol I don't know what the answer is but I do know it's a problem....and I wouldn't have thought so 2 years ago.

Cant tell you how much all the negative comments and nostalgia-chasing viewers I’ve had that affect me mentally every single day of my life. As a kid who suddenly built an audience to then “give it all up” it takes its toll. I’m not a “KZbinr” so I can’t relate to the grind of trying to please the audience as much now, but I can agree that being a content creator on the internet is a unique and still unknown field that really challenges your mental state after a while. Thank you for sharing this. In a way, I found this video comforting - because I kind of assumed that bigger KZbinrs than me had already solved this problem and it was just me that was failing to brush off the tiny proportion of tiny-minded critics. I'm not saying that I relish your discomfort; far from it. I wish you weren't going through this, but to hear you talk about this makes me realise where the hater criticism is coming from, and what it's really about. It's not happening because of you; it's happening because of *them*. Your critics want drag you down because it's all they know how to do; all they are motivated to do; they don't know how to succeed, so they must try to make you fail. Your critics don't know how to do the creative things you can achieve as a natural function of your creative soul. I suppose it's jealousy really. And it affects you because you're smart enough to think about stuff, and human enough to care about stuff. One of the most dangerous things you can do is believe someone else's opinion about you. Now, having preached this message to you, I need to go and learn it myself.

It's always hard to filter overwhelmingly negative comments out, especially if you run the risk of people calling you our for dismissing "constructive feedback" in a smaller community, but unfortunately it's also something that you probably can't avoid as a content creator - while also trying to actually find what makes people potentially react in negative was to some parts of your content. Game Devs struggle with this greatly as well, with situations like where Path of Exile's subreddit was so overwhelmingly negative a few months back that it felt to me like they held the game's developer hostage to implement certain changes. Hope you don't get discouraged Shrimp, me and my gf love your content, and we both think it's amazingly unique and educative :). Have a nice day!

@@AtomicShrimp "To donate is to willingly lose control of how a sum of money will be spent." Exactly man. You dont donate to a victim of natural catastrophe and then get mad when they spend some of your bucks at disneyland to have a good time (which they didnt even do lmao). Also I agree very much with your above comment. This video felt so insightful and so human - I could relate to it completely without ever having "made it big" anywhere. Its a very human issue I believe and I think its one of distancing. You need to put emotional distance between you and the people you interact with online. That is obviously true for negative comments, but sadly also for the positive ones. If youre that close to other peoples opinions and motives you will always be dependent on them, for better or worse.

This video was amazing because of the giant cohones it took to make it, because of the smooth flow of the personal story combined with the interviews in the end and because it was genuine. Its so hard... I have a problem where I respond to them. I wish I didn't. I feel embarrassed after but at the moment it rockets my blood pressure... if its about my wife its just pure anger, like enraging. This had to be a wildly hard video to make but A LOT of creators go though this without ever saying anything. The craziest thing I've experienced was I just went on my honeymoon... it was the first time in 3 years I took a real vacation. I didnt take my computer, I deleted KZbin from my phone and I didnt see any comments for about 2 weeks. I never felt better. I felt like a weight was lifted off my shoulders. It felt confusing and strange to not live with stress and anxiety for 2 weeks. When we got back and I went to KZbin studio and read some comments almost immediately the stress came back. The other thing that really resonated is when you said there was a hate video about you. That is one of the hardest things to deal with. Another creator about the same size of me made a video about me and the thumbnail was my face that said "fat disgusting pig" its still on KZbin, KZbin hasn't done anything about it. That day I woke up to hundreds and hundreds of hate comments about me, my videos, my wife, my life... its just awful. anyway I can keep going on and on... but thank you for making this video!

There is so much about this constant tension that people who only view videos will have a hard time relating too. I know that’s the case for my own experience. My comments on channels I liked changed massively 10 years ago when I started creating myself. It’s so hard to know if a video is connecting with people without checking comments, and yet herein lies the dilemma. If you learn any helpful lessons through this let me know. There is such a connection to the work as well. There's a deep focus on the negative comments that's amplified when greater effort is put into the product being critiqued. It's a feedback loop in that way. Regardless of how many hours you continue to pour into a project, there will always be someone there to say it wasn't good enough. In some ways that may be why Will has indicated he was less stressed when he put in less effort. Negative feedback on something you feel isn't representative of your best effort is often much easier to tolerate than criticism of that which you poured your heart and soul into. That criticism, as he said, leads you to put more time into each successive video. Eventually it's not sustainable as there is not more time or energy which can be devoted to addressing all areas of potential criticism on every project. I can only imagine how this feels on projects as large as yours! I wish you and Will the best.

Duuuuude : , ( I’m 25 and feel like someone with the potential for something but no follow through. So I find people who share interests with me who actually do something about it and it makes me feel more capable of life and completeness. I teared up watching the squid games video because it reminded me of healthier sober fun from high school. I was amazed by your ability to memelord but also make science??? Hey! My son found your channel, so we've been watching your videos, and I just watched this one. (This will be a positive comment.) 1. You're not weak. The people who are, remember, deliberately trying to hurt you, know exactly what they're doing, and are doing it on purpose. Usually this isn't the first time they've done this, which means they're not a beginner at it. You're not weak for feeling bad when someone who literally practices making people feel bad makes you feel bad. 2. I really like this video. Because I've never seen anyone else on KZbin say exactly what you're saying here, that even though most of your comments are positive, the ones that aren't are biting and affect you in a very outsized way. I'm not a successful KZbinr, and there's no way I would know this if you didn't just say it, and it really should be something everyone who wants to release videos to the public learns BEFORE they start doing that. 3. Having other KZbinrs answer this question is one of the most brilliant ideas I've ever seen. And I bet it's even one of the most important bits of the video for you--you can remind yourself from now on that this stuff affects everyone who creates videos like this, that it's absolutely not just you. So, thank you so much for this video. It's amazing. I'm now subscribed, with the bell on, and I'll keep watching your stuff, because this video is this good and this important. What are you going to do in the future? There's no fucking telling because you can't predict what genius will do next. :) Thank you so much for making this, and for making all your videos. You've affected who knows how many people positively, and that's going to keep happening as long as your videos stay up and people see them, even if you never make another video. Thank you so much for everything you've already done and for being so unbelievably brave enough to do even more.

Hey bud, burnout is a normal part of having a large channel. Don't worry about it, you aren't a horrible person for feeling human. We aren't evolved to handle connecting to so many people and being subject to their judgement/feelings. Totalbiscuit went through this as well and had to disable his comments long ago (Rest in peace, big guy) to cope. Another coping mechanism is making a second channel as your new creativity outlet while keeping your main channel as a containment zone and for large projects (look at InternetHistorian or Jerma985). Either way, the best option is usually to find a way to distance yourself from the negativity, in a way where you still feel like you are in control of your content. At the end of the day, you are a smart guy, and you will do well in anything you pursue. This channel is a great resume for all sorts of other venues, so don't worry so much about keeping yourself stable financially just off of this channel. What I personally like is you being goofy you while working on creative stuff. At the end of the day, YOU make your audience, not the other way around. The content YOU want to make will attract the people you want watching. Thanks for being open, bud. You and caretaker are going to be alright :)

Being a KZbinr is an oddly isolating job. It's like you said, spending 12 hours a day every day of the week sitting at home on a computer is normal. Most people have classmates or coworkers but a lot of our daily human interaction instead comes from comments, social media, reddit etc. It's hard to cut that out entirely; positive feedback is rewarding and popularity is addicting. It's also impossible to avoid shitty individuals when reaching millions of people but finding the right perspective can help make them less hurtful. I'd recommend figuring out what it is you want from being a KZbinr and determine whether or not reading the comments to the point of frustrating yourself helps achieve those goals. For me, I earn just as much money, create just as passionately and entertain just as many people regardless of whether or not I expose myself to hurtful people. When I do come across their worthless opinions, I remind myself they've changed none of my goals. There will be a day where William Osman the KZbinr is long gone and William Osman the person carries on his life. Those online opinions will be long forgotten but the result of achieving those goals will last a lifetime. You and your family are beautiful people and you're respected among your peers. Hope to see more great videos from you soon.

This seems like a new phenomenon for us creators, as movie and TV stars in the past didn’t have the comments section and weren’t so inextricably tied up with their audience. The old media stars had to be accepted by the gatekeepers and the gatekeepers paid the bills and put demands on stars. They were chosen, so they were entitled to feel special and leave behind the hoi polloi. We crawled out of the muck ourselves and built our channels ourselves and it was the masses that chose us. We still live normal lives and see ourselves as normal people. But we know fame is fleeting and the next big thing is right around the corner. When we see a negative comment it always feels like the tide is turning and that the same crowd that picked us up on their shoulders a month ago is making its way to balcony to toss us over.

Dude, I really needed that right now you can`t even imagine. I know exactly what you mean by the "feel like you`re complaining" Part. I think a lot of people are also enraged by that simple fact of relatability. The fact that you are a human just like them, but are doing seemingly well with doing what you love, makes their urge to find something wrong with you, your situation or the video they are watching grow. I think for me it hits so hard because of the effort of it. Positive Comments are almost effortless. But that someone actively goes out of their way to get angry at you and thus has changed their own mental state to feeling angry instead of happy by choice makes it so much more impactful. especially because in my case I sometimes get rage-filled comments that are 5000 symbols long. PARAGRAPHS of ANger. That's so much effort. But in the end, I guess it is just as they do not know us - we also do not know their situation and what is going on with them. That's not meant to defend them, just to be clear - I just find peace of mind when I just write off the angry stuff as someone who has had a REALLY bad day and I presented myself as an easy way to vent. But I guess that's not hitting the mark fully as well - some people are just jackasses and feel good about that. :/ And it's interesting to see that in the end part of the video or even in these comments here there are so many different KZbinrs from different parts of the world who live through this EXACT thing and all seem to be opened up just by YOUR willingness to open up about this. Thank you some much for this, Will - this feels like influencers therapy.

I won't read all of that but all I'm saying is I can understand what y'all go through, I can relate to the negativity as well cuz I was a bright in my class and the way people hated me used to make me question myself if there's something wrong with me, years passed, I'm about to be 18 and I've got no friends and the one's I still had from that school don't want to see me progress in life so it's better to neglect the negative or just adapt it
@TheGrumbliestPuppy3 жыл бұрын
Don’t read the comments, except for those on patreon. Some people are lucky enough to have real thick skin, but for the rest of y’all there’s zero benefit to it when it effects your mental state this badly. Unfortunately it’s part of the territory, if you’re even slightly famous you’re going to get more negative comments than you have seconds in the day. Nothin y’all do will stop it, and positive fans rarely leave comments. Cause yknow, most normal people are happy to enjoy your content, give it a like and move on. Partially because we know the comment section of any website is a septic tank, especially KZbin’s. Think of it this way: instead of focusing on the hundreds of thousands or millions of people who love what you make, y’all are directing all of your focus on the much smaller number of loud haters. You’re not missing out on community reading the comments, cause if they effect you this negatively then you’re missing out on community even if you do read em.
