Flat affect is a symptom of schizophrenia where an individual is not able to express emotions in the same way other people might. I was experiencing flatter affect today and so I wanted to share what that was like for me.

I've had flat affect since early childhood. One of my earliest memories was my kindergarten music teacher pulling me out of class and not letting me back in until I smiled. I try to smile and emote to make people feel comfortable, but I still speak in a monotone.

Same, was just going to comment myself on how autistics also experience flat affect, and quite regularly so. It doesn’t personally bother me if I am because when it happens I’m typically just being myself, it just sometimes bothers those around me and makes them constantly ask if I’m okay. Most of the time I am okay when this happens, so it gets frustrating because people assume I’m upset while I’m not.

Thank you for sharing this and for making very enlightening content. I experienced something similar while on a certain anti-depressant medication and although my partner noticed it, it wasn't something I fully noticed until I came off the medication. It felt so weird to me that I was crying and laughing again which is something I wasn't really able to do for months. Sharing your experience really helps others because like you said this isn't something that is easy to notice in yourself and for those who may not have very attentive or emotionally attuned people in their lives it can go unnoticed for months or for years even and it really can impact social relationships and our overall ability to connect with others.

@@jmk1962 so sorry to hear that. That's why I feel that Schizophrenia is such a cruel disease. It can get inside the person and change their core. For example my cousin used to be a surf teacher, woke up early every day, fought his way to the top and never gave up. Now people call him lazy and a slob because of his disease. If only they knew. Meanwhile my sister really IS lazy and has no illness whatsoever. Breaks my heart to see him struggle and to see that young man trapped inside himself I understand it is very hard to fight/research, but I hope science can make strides in negative/cognitive symptoms. His positives are very well under control under medication.

@@persona-wo8bi that makes me happy you are there for them and taking into account what I said :) because I have been on the other end of ignorant assumptions thrown at me based on superficial observations and it isn't nice and is very isolating. we have to remember that everyone is actually acting 'normal' considering everything they're dealing with, and the reality in their body. It's hard to tell on the outside. And it's very easy to forget, but everyone is at all times actually doing the best they can

I didn’t know that was part of schizophrenia, most of the symptoms seem completely foreign to me and I just stumbled across your videos but I have been around a couple of people in my life with schizophrenia and it’s gave me a much better understanding of it and made me feel much more empathetic towards it. The only issue I’ve ever had was depression but this is something I actually have experienced with it, the inability to convey any outward emotion and it feels strange to try and force it but I usually have for those around me who I care about. With me it usually started before I went into a extended depression.

I feel this often and when I was on the “good” medicine i felt it all the time.. But thanks for reminding me of this, i just had a good friend who also suffers from schizophrenia who “broke up” our friendship 2 days ago, i know that they have shown signs on getting worse but I couldn’t tell them because they would get mad and deny it. They sounded so flat and had no emotions in their message where they told me we never had anything in common, but later told me it was a tough decision and they had been crying the whole day but it just read as they had copied something from a formal book. I know they could show a lot of emotion though texts as we wrote each other once a week keeping up with good and bad, so i have been very confused, but your video makes me think that they probably experience what you describe so well! Thank you for posting this video and all of your videos. We appreciate you. I experienced PMDD ( Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder) With varying intensity as I got older. PMDD was debilitating and one of the biggest symptoms was flat affect and depression. My cycles were intense emotionally, and physically painful leading up to my period. I had 1 week a month that I felt clear and stable. I knew I was experiencing flat affect, as I was a shell of myself, like a zombie. My voice had no inflection and I could not even smile, not even to force it. I was depressed, to the point of feeling suicidal at times. My husband was able to pin point when it was happening. He would help me recognize that my negative thoughts were not true and that it was going to pass. He would positively self talk. God, he was so amazing. I had a partial hysterectomy in 2017 due to fibroids which also helped the PMDD drastically. Mental health disorders come on so many different forms. Thank you for sharing yours. I think everyone experiences something like this to one degree or another. I know I do. Sometimes I feel irreparably isolated and unable to connect. It is a sharply painful feeling. Thank you for sharing so earnestly about your life. You will never know all the good you have done.

I totally understand this. I'm like this several times a week. I usually have a perception shift too. That's when things look more like through a first person view through a camera, my balance is off, and it gets harder to talk too.

Thank you for this. I was unaware of flat affect, until you explained it. My family and I used to watch home videos of when I was 5-7 years old, and I noticed that my voice was very flat, very monotone, even when I was playing around. Somebody I am working with to find work also told me that I should try to sound like I have more emotion for a job interview. I always noticed this "flat affect" in my voice and with my emotions. My niece told me I sound like the polar bear in the cartoon show "We Bare Bears". I thought that bear sounded cool though when I first heard him, but I have to admit that I wished a little bit to sound like I have more emotion. All I know is that I'm happy when I'm happy, even if I do have a monotone voice.

You might possibly be autistic as a lot of ASD people are like this. There is an online autism test. Takes about 10 minutes to do and it gives a score at the end which indicates whether you are likely to be autistic or not. Might be worth doing one?

Yesterday I was so excited about a good news story about a local business I like. I was going to share the news with my bf but he thought I was going to tell him bad news bc my affect was the opposite of happy/excited, he said. It's frustrating.

Dont compare the affects of depression to this disease. Its really ignorant.
@nnnaominicole
@nnnaominicole 2 жыл бұрын
@@ThornyRoseV Mental illness occurs on a spectrum. This is most definitely true for illnesses such as depression and schizophrenia. There may be some people with schizophrenia that do not experience flat affect often and people with depression that do experience it often. It happens to be a very strong symptom of major depressive disorder and treatment resistant depression. I am in no way saying that schizophrenia is not a very serious illness, but depression occurs on a spectrum and is sometimes serious enough to lead to symptoms even worse than flat affect.

@@ThornyRoseV ….. I’m not ignorant, Rose, and I’m not comparing anything. Perhaps you weren’t able to comprehend my comment. I said “similar”, NOT comparative! Since my precious granddaughter suffers from schizophrenia, I am fully aware of the difference. It’s you who are the ignorant one.

I have flat affect or even no affect at all very often and it's so hard and stressful to play "normal". At moments I feel like I can't move any muscle, I lay in my bed holding my phone, my hands and fingers go numb, my extremes are cold and numb, I breathe shallow, I forget to blink so my eyes start to water. In such moments I'm so blunt I won't go feed my animals. It feels like being hollow and deflating.

You're so brave to share; a truly heartfelt inspiration for the rest of us. Disregard if not helpful, but I notice your speech being held back - as if by a 'presence' other than you in your jaw muscles, as if your jaw is acting on its own, and your thoughts from your mind are being impeded by whose ever in your jaw. Odd I know, so don't listen if it makes no sense.

Interesting! Perfect description of flat affect and forcing your face to emote. Yes, I can see it in your face - it particularly takes expression away from the eyes. I have family with schizoaffective depression and have had bouts of flat affect myself; It's like your inner emotions aren't able to be reflected in your face, that connection becomes broken. But I doubt a person who doesn't watch you regularly would see anything particularly wrong... it's usually family and close friends that pick up on it.

I used to go through it at work and was constantly asked if I was feeling okay or if something was bothering me when I was feeling fine. Way back in my school days I had tried put for pom squad and was picked only as an alternate because I "didn't smile enough". I couldn't have been more excited during tryouts and never understood why that happened until I started getting help as an adult.
