I needed to get the lvl straight and true so I put up the roof rafters very 8'. This helped but then the rain came. I worked until I couldn't work anymore.

I just bought my ‘Red Poppy’ .... in the UK the Royal British Legion a Veterans charity sell poppy badges to ‘remember’ the fallen of the two great wars and all conflicts. All proceeds go to help war Veterans. It coincides with Armistice Day the 11th November - which was the day the ‘guns stopped’ in The Great War of 1914-18. The Poppy was the chosen emblem, as in the blood soaked ‘fields of Flanders’ on the Northern France/Belgium borders - the Poppy was the very first signs of life, amongst all the destruction. Great Job.... with the workshop. Hope you get ’wind & watertight’ soon 👍🤠

45 years ago in a small town in Arizona my dad built our home much the same way you are. He built everything by him self, you can still see the shovel marks on the basements walls... yes he even dug the basement out by hand with a shovel and wheel barrow! I love the history and hard work he did for us and just as you are doing for your family! I hope Your cute wife appreciates all your hard work, it is becoming a lost art, not many men can do this stuff anymore. Fantastic job and be safe!!

Get your son up there to help! I know he is young but so much is sped up with just a little help, not heavy lifting for him but more guiding things and not making you be in 2 places at once of having to horse things. It is also passing the skill sets and knowledge. Yes I understand the safety issues and somethings you will not let him do or help with but having him there working with you has so many benefits for you, him and the family

I was a little critical on installing of the lvl beam video. It was all talk and no play. I became a subscriber on your digging for a well video and you bent the pole. Even though you weren't able to find water. That was me or some other person in the world trying to do something solo. Yes there is a struggle completing things at time, but that what makes the finished work more rewarding. Thanks for what your doing.

Great job. Only thing you might want to consider is adding at least 1 post in the middle of that ridge because it will sag with no support because a 14 inch lvl cannot even come close to spanning 40 ft. At least check it before you deck the roof. Just measure off the floor on each end and then check in the middle and then make an informed decision.

Great job. Sure wish you had a helper. Have you thought about a tarp draped on one end in case the weather gets bad, you could at least be cutting the rafters out of that cold weather. You are going to need some heat to keep you from freezing. I agree with one of the other post, some scaffolding would be worth the rental costs vs the time you are spending climbing that ladder. Prayers for your safety and some good weather so you can get it dried in.

Love the tails.Gonna be honest here. You need to work a plate to plate collar tie or ridge post every ten feet into your design or your roof is gonna be as swaybacked as an old nag.Apologies if you planned on it but your process is out of order if you did and you are working against yourself on several levels.You got a very neatly done framing job there but the walls will bow out if that ridge drops and you will not like how it looks inside when the Sheetrock pulls apart at the top of the walls.Stay the course, it's looking great.Don't move in till its 99% done...... Ask me how I know:)
@Natedoc808
@Natedoc808 2 жыл бұрын
We always put 2x6 diagonal braces into the top plates of the corners, around 5 ft mark which lands between the truss or rafter. Diagonal bracing in the gable end wall also decreases the bowing effect of the roof to the walls. The roof is t that heavy and the steeper your roof the less lateral pressure to bow the wall occurs.

One other thought. As you are going through the inspection route (To which I fully agree with that decision ) Not sure if the area of the double doors will be classified as a garage, but will you have to have a fire rated separation from the living quarters with a self closing 2 hour fire rated door and 5/8" FR gypsum board on the ceiling and divider walls? Also you should have separation from any wood to concrete connection on the interior walls, ground floor, PLUS, vapor barrier between the interior divider wall top plate and any ceiling joists they come in contact with on the second floor. You should finish up with a seamless 6 mi polly vapor barrier of the entire second floor finished ceiling and exterior walls.

No putting my nose in your business... But since you don't have any ceiling rafters tieing your outer walls together..(as of yet) You might consider running string line down both walls.. To make sure the ridge beam and roof joists haven't bowed the outer walls out... Just a thought.. (I'm thinking if not yet... With more load that ridge beam will sag, unless the walls are tied together.. Or at least the roof joists are tied together maybe half way down...) Again this is just food for thought... Looks like pretty soon.. She'll be weather tight....

About to remodel an ugly duckling ranch with some big beams and rafters for cathedrals, followed by building a new one with likely same but may do some post and beam work for the mezzanine but all with exposed finish beams and rafters. Big thing I learned early on, more nails doesn’t always mean stronger as the wood begins to get compromised as it’s fibers are split by the nails. The strength is in the hardware, tico nails of the hangers or using structural screws.

If you not going to install ceiling joists or rafter ties to counter the outward thrust once that roof is loaded,...then that LVL is gonna have to carry that entire 40' clear span. ... I have never seen a single ply LVL carry anywhere near that load...Who sized that for you? An engineer?I admire your work ethic, great job.
@brucewayne2984
@brucewayne2984 6 жыл бұрын
Eric Brown There is no way anybody sized that for him, that ridge is extremely undersized. This is the first thing I noticed when I clicked on the video. Unless he has a wall that he is using to transfer the load to the footings, which I doubt seeing the floor plan. No way this will pass an inspection!

Collar ties
@SkilledEddie
@SkilledEddie 6 жыл бұрын
Red Poppy Ranch you still need rafter ties which can also be used as ceiling joists to serve both purposes. Collar ties are not required but rafter ties are. Like I said in your previous video that lvl is not serving as a beam in your situation it is basically an overkill ridge board because that is not sized properly for a 40' span to carry the load of the roof so it must be used as a board. A ridge board is simply a nailing surface to secure the rafters. The critical part of your roof system is the rafter ties/ ceiling joists. They keep the walls from spreading outward from the downward pressure on the roof and prevent the rafters from pulling apart at the ridge.
@SkilledEddie
@SkilledEddie 6 жыл бұрын
brad campbell that is a common mistake a lot of KZbinrs make. They think just make a pocket and slap a big beam in it and it's good. I've seen many videos from offgridders and diy small house builds do this because they don't know the difference between a ridge beam and a ridge board. Carpenters know that if you use a ridge board you can even use a piece of 1by because a ridge board is just a nailing surface and not a structural member.

No hurricane straps on the low end of each rafter? Do you nail the top hanger strap to the rafter, or just toe nail the rafter top to the ridge LDL beam. You won’t see a hurricane but could see a tornado in the area. Or even very violent thunder storms with straight line gusts that possibly reach 100 mph. Just curious. It’s now 7/2019 so the shop is probably done. Would have loved to see how you raised that ridge composite beam to the peaks and jiggled the ends into their slots. Wow, what an accomplishment. I am in awe of your solutions to your obstacles. JoeB
