Those games still felt like SF, the core mechanics where left in the game Air dashing a deep combo system, gatlings, robust comeback mechanics have been GG staples since the late 1990's. Strive has either gimped these options or canned them entirely . because of this the game is a watered down GG experience made worse by the complete lack of damage scaling. By the way XRD suffered from similar issues catering to brain dead setplay characters like LEO and ELF but this game is nothing but the braindead shit mainly because the game systems actually work hard to limit the players creativity.

I'd put Xrd in S Tier personally but I def understand JM's gripes. My biggest gripe is how rewarding corner trapping is. It is extremely rewarding AND easy. One time I took a stop watch and timed how often people were trapped in a corner in XRD tournaments vids and nearly half of all rounds were someone in a corner. That turns people off, Arcsys clearly noticed this also considering Strive's wall break mechanic.

Pokken is actually a surprisingly great game worth looking into more, IMO. I can understand why the FGC mostly ignored it - FGC is primarily PS4, Pokemon still mostly catering to kids, game originally being on the Wii U, etc - but it deserves more attention than it got. Given that it's the Tekken dev, no huge surprise, but the sheer level of presentation and mechanical polish is hard to overstate. The only complaint I have is that the combos are fairly short, but even within those fairly short combos, you have a tremendous amount of choices that you can make, and there's some fairly difficult execution on some characters if you want there to be. You have a tremendous amount of ability for expression as a player with pretty much every character in every situation and combo.

Capcom vs SNK 2 is the best fighter i've ever played. Good flow, great art and sound fx, felt like it had impact and the roster was extremely good. Fun as hell to destroy with my team of Ken, Terry and Rock.

Capcom vs snk 2 is my favorite fighting game of all time, it has so much in it where you can choose between 6 meters and the roster had a lot of characters, the game just has a lot of variety and I wish it can come out in modern consoles.

I think Fighterz should have been S tier, even with the issues he mentioned. It just has this meta appeal. It has beautiful animations, and it's IP is super popular, making it fun to watch for people who have no idea what's actually going on. It seems to have a wider audience than most fighting games, and I'm finally playing fighting games again (horribly I might add), after a 20 year hiatus.

Jojo's heritage for the future is something you might not play for long, but should definitely check out. The games so broken it makes mvc2 look like an honest game of karate champ. There's characters that just have flight. There's a fireball that crosses up at full screen. Theres a universal move that lets you record any moves you want and then your stand does them and your able to move and attack at the same time. And that's inly the tip of the iceberg, seriously it's insane

DBFZ is a good balanced game the only real outlier is UI Goku and he’s got like a shit ton of options and GODLY normals but ever since his nerf recently he hasn’t been as bad a lot of his cheap ass moves and options were toned down but only noobs used them really. One thing that was ass was his DP He didn’t ever need one being the on character with the most defensive options in the game lol. But again his DP was nerfed and Bardock was just the fucking PRIME Rushdown character of DBFZ and probably still is but with the roster just about doubled a lot of strong characters are and or were balanced along the way. And what’s funny is everyone talks about UI Goku but Kid Buu is literally the fucking Jesus of DBFZ he’s been nerfed constantly and is still easily a top character yet I NEVER see him in or on online play but I see just about 80 Billion UI Gokus.

You should try Soul Calibur 2 if you haven't yet! It is a blast to play. I've played through the single-player adventure mode more times than I can count. The gameplay is easy to jump into but has a lot of depth for competitive players.

The first Marvel vs Capcom is probably one of most well crafted fighting game ever. As much as I like the second one, I think the entirety of the first game is a masterpiece. The graphics/music/gameplay is polished to basically perfection. The second one introduced so many characters that the balance is totally whack and I also didn't like the 3D backgrounds compared to the hand-drawn pixel art of the first game, as well as the music was really lame, like Jazzy weird generic crap. Where the music in MvC1 not only was amazing, each character had their own song that would play for their stage and whatnot, or like if you knocked a person out and a new character jumped in, their music would start playing. MVC1 is a masterpiece, I behoove anyone to try the arcade version.

It's not really mysterious how MvCI has better rollback than SFV. It came out later and wasn't their first experiment with rollback. MvCI had a ton of issues but they were more art direction issues and roster choices than basic functionality, even the game play is allegedly good if you can find a team to play and want to look at the game.

This is extremely bias, but you should give Melty Blood a try. Tons of viable characters, lots of play style variety, it's free, very open combo system, your moon choice effects system mechanics and really how you approach the game, great training mode, great sound track, great rollback netcode. I'm not going to say online is great because it has no match making except discord. Though the discord match making bot works very well. With it being free and having rollback it's worth checking out. Plus you can have some clickbait title like, "The game that made fighting game legend GO1 what he is today", or maybe, " Lewd rollback doujinshi fighting game that made GO1 buff" Then put some like lewd Melty Blood waifu as the thumbnail.

It's pretty interesting how strong and starkly different people's opinions are on what makes a good fighting game. Like I've only really seen this tier list and LordKnight's and even the approaches to the lists are so different. Obviously there are some similarities like Vampire and CVS2 being S/A tier but it happens. And if someone like Sajam made a list it would likely be vastly different from both.

You should play some Brawlhalla, it's got jts fair share of issues but it's got a great community overall, the competitive is thriving and 2021 has $1M in prize pools for the year, not to mention there's a group called Brawl League that offers free coaching. It has a good online experience, lots of community tournaments and events, you get into games really soon, its pretty rare to have to wait a long time assuming you're not somewhere in the higher tiers diamond (the highest rank) because there's isn't as many people there obviously. Its really easy to get into, free to play, and available on all devices, one of if not the biggest fighting game in the world. Not to mention it doesn't take up much space Definitely worth a try

If you weren't so damn wholesome and upbeat I'd be roasting you for putting GGXrd and TFH as low as they are. You can take your opinions and...have a nice day. If you have any interest at all in platform fighters, you might want to check out SSBM with its new rollback, or Rushdown Revolt now that it is in open alpha. Rushdown Revolt is building in a lot of interesting mechanics (wavedashing, move cancels, burst) that might appeal to some traditional fighting game players, and I'd like to see these indie games get shouted out by content creators.

Mortal kombat 9 was a great fighting game and it was fun. Mk11 definitely seems like a downgrade compared to other nrs games in the past. I just don't like some of the mk11 mechanics (wake up role) which made it noob friendly and the limited combo creativity in that game that made it boring to play.

Funny that you prefer TFH's combo system to Skullgirls for the exact reason I prefer Skullgirls's combo system to TFH. The binary burst means that I know if I'm doing move X, it will always combo into move Y, whereas stun decay or juggle decay in games like FighterZ, Battle for the Grid, or TFH means that if you didn't lab out that entire combo beforehand, you can never know for sure if your next hit will work. It's the difference between memorizing the rules that combos operate on compared to memorizing the combos themselves. As for games I think you should definitely put more time into, I'm a huge fan of Smash, especially Ultimate, but it's hard for me to say you need to put more time into it when the online is garbage.
