One of the main reasons why I subscribed to this KZbin channel is Pete shows the viewers the reality of small farms and how they operate. He also shows us how small farms helps local communities in their respective regions. Glad I found this channel two weeks ago on Thursday.

I read an article recently that stated farming was an occupation destined for elimination due to mechanization and AI. I hope and pray that is not the case. A better future would be one where family farms replace industrial farming all over the country and everyone can enjoy the benefits of locally grown food. It would be better for the environment, general health and the economy as well.

Greed and avarice, redundancy aside, is not the "American dream sold to everyone." The ability of the individual to pursue life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness is the American dream. The individual gets to determine what makes them happy, it isn't constrained by government. If hoarding material possessions is your goal, that's your right; if it isn't, that's your right too.

You nailed my view these days Pete. The human condition is such that we always want more and our whole society is based on consumption and the idea of continuous economic growth. @@JustaFewAcresFarm Pete do you milk any of the cows for personal use?
@JamesDedmon3 жыл бұрын
It makes sense on the beef. Years ago when we got raw milk from the uncles dairy, the cows were pastured more than today. So certain weeds, made the milk smell, and bad taste so it’s not a stretch on beef. Actually we purchased parts of cattle for beef then, so a common practice was to take the steer off pasture and for one month just grain feed him. This is how beef was raised for personal use, in my childhood

Back in the 80's I used a cattle oiler to help reduce the bothersome flies on the cattle. Easy maintainence and cost effective too. I only needed one oiler for my 26 cows. It was easy to move it to different pastures as I would hook a drag chain to it or lift it with the front end loader.

I was working on a job in Kentucky. We had to use walkie-talkies to communicate with the Crain operator because we were out of site for hand signals. Problem was the only channel we could use was being used by some local workers like a phone. We tried telling them we only needed the channel every once in a while but for safety reasons, we really needed the channel clear for those few moments. They ignored us. My coworker/ friend frustrated one day when we couldn't hear the crane operator 100 ft from us but could hear Billie Bob talking to Bobby Bill loud and clear My fiend tried getting the channel for 10 min but they refused. My friend ended up cursing one of them who mistook him for his friend. Friend "Hey, why don't you just goto hell?" Bb- "Is this Billy?" Fr- "yeah this is Billy & why don't u just fk yourself? Bb- "gee Billy. Just don't sound like you. I don't know why u would say something like that." Fr- "i said because I meant it. Truth Is I never did like u. I think ur a pos " Bb- "well gee bill. That's not very nice. I don't know what to say." Fr- "don't say nothing Bob! Just stfu. We can settle this when I see you later.. So for now you can stick it up your az, go fk yourself with it, most important; STFU AND GET OFF THE CHANNEL ! We'll settle this later!" He was so mad. He was looking at the walkie talkie he was yelling in like he wanted to reach through it and grab the guy on the other end. We were laughing so hard. He got the line cleared too. No offense , but you aren't from Louisville & your dad isn't named Billie Bob by any chance?

I have had amazing results with "the big stinko". You probably know about it, but just in case. It is a 2 1/2 gallon glass jar with a top that lets in flies. Hang raw bacon from the top and let it tough the water filled 1/2 way up with some dish soap. I have had to empty that once a day for 4 days filled to the brim with dead flies. At that point, forget the bacon, just leave 1/4 full of dead flies, add water to 1/2 and some soap and you are on your way. We had to keep it 20-30 feet away because it lived up to its name, but it must have cleared flies for at least 300 feet in all directions. No flies after a few days. We buried the dead flies in a small pit and covered with dear after each dumping. It would at least clear your barn area of flies. Amazing Rich

Hi Pete. Excellent upload, as usual. What you talked about is encompassed by the expression “the law of diminishing returns”. Here in Australia people don’t say “get your ducks in a row”, that’s more American but it describes you and your attitude to life to a T. Years ago (30 or 40) I saw written on the back of a truck “people buy things they don’t need with money they don’t have to impress people they don’t like” and said to myself “I’m never going that way”. Having a down to earth attitude to life as you do is the way to go.

A natural remedy for flies/biting flies, tics, and mosquitoes is the use of plain old powered sulfur. My Uncle Bob use to keep a sock filled with powdered sulfur near the door on his land in Conroe Texas. All you had to do is whack your legs and arms with the sulfur sock and insects would run the other direction. Powered sulfer is pretty cheap and a little goes a long way.. So why not try it on your cows and see if it helps with your fly issue. You could run the cows through a chute that lightly powders them in specific areas. It's just a suggestion...have a great day!
