"Good dogs don't BITE!" "Don't worry, I don't bite." This was the first hint that Angel is a vampire. If the Three are the Dog's in this line, and Angel doesn't bite, then he is a "good dog" meaning he is a vampire. I love these subtle references that call back to lines said earlier in the series.

I love when Buffy puts down her crossbow, bares her neck, and says to Angel, "Go ahead." I love how successful the writers and actors have been at showing that these characters are thinking all the time. It never feels like the actors are standing around waiting to say their next line. I think Buffy's actions here are like saying to Angel, "You're telling me that you're bad. I acknowledge that, but I don't believe you. You are not as bad as you are telling me you are. And I'm going to prove it to you. I'm so sure that you are not a bad person, that I'm willing to bet my life on it."

Fun reaction. One disadvantage to a present day viewer is that you have a generation of “ supernatural “ entertainment with expectations and information to gather thoughts. But Buffy was brand new for us. Twilight, True Blood, Vampire Diaries, Supernatural…. They were all in the future. Buffy was the groundbreaking series that set the themes, tropes, and situations that shows followed. Your reaction was authentic and like ours back in 1997. Once again we learned that nothing is what it seems In Sunnydale.

BVS was ground-breaking, but they didn't define the genre or set the tropes. This stuff is old. Most of the vampire lore in BVS is stuff that's been part of the mythology since the mid-19th century, with some being satire/ spoof of those tropes. What BVS did was show the industry that a traditionally male-oriented action/ horror genre could be repurposed as a female-teen focused drama.

Quick lore drop: Joss Whedon, the creator/showrunner/main writer of Buffy wrote Avengers 1 & 2, so he wrote both of those Budapest references. Twilight started as Buffy fanfiction, and Vampire Diaries rips off an *INSANE* amount from Buffy. Tropes, character arcs, multi-episode and season arcs. Yeah. Buffy did it first and did it better on a lower budget. 🎤 drop

Darla saying to Buffy's moms "the War of Independence," rather than "the Revolutionary War," is a clue that she is old enough to have lived during the war. The Master then mentions that she was 400 years old at the end, so of course she was much, much older than the Revolutionary war.

So great you weren't spoiled for this! A perfect reaction of excitement (pre-kiss) and shock afterwards. They had about a dozen "Oh, no, Angel CAN'T be a…can he?" fakeouts leading up to this, starting from the whole bit where he MAY have triggered Buffy's vampire-sense by walking behind her, but she just shrugged and wrote it off as "intuition". I'll put the whole list up later. Yes, it was very well-directed. Scott Brazil had been a big success on the 1980s police drama "Hill Street Blues" and the show was lucky to get him here. (He died young, alas.) Yes, Willow is completely adorable! Pretty much full-time. Giles is lucky that he hasn't been (inappropriately) "getting lucky" with Buffy…he keeps getting spotted in places he really shouldn't be with her, lol. His visiting Buffy's mom at the hospital makes about as much sense as the imaginary barbecue fork, lol. One year, I went back home for Thanksgiving and brought my Season 1 DVDs to show my dad. (This was before streaming, so you had to commit to binge, lol.). When we got to that last scene, Dad asked "Should Buffy really be wearing that big cross around Angel?" and I just bit my lip and went "good point…" (RIP, Dad. Thanks for this house. Renting sucked.)

Eh, not just him. In Agent Carter, for example, Edwin talks about meeting his love while stationed in Budapest. It's basically a shortcut for a Europe-but-not-too-fancy.

@@migmit Maybe, but it's also a place that has had a lot of political turmoil over the past few centuries. "At the turn of the century" as Darla said here would have been pure chaos: industrialization, civilian unrest, population going up, ethnic Hungarians forcing out Germans and other groups, etc. Exactly the sort of thing vampires would love since people go missing all the time. As for the MCU, Hungary left the USSR and set up the 3rd Republic in 1989. Only the Baltic states left the Soviet Union earlier. So again: time of mass change with agents from multiple powers in the city. I agree it was probably just a throwaway Whedon joke, but it's one that makes a lot of sense historically.

However, Vampire Diaries was it's own separate work started about the same time as Buffy (kind of, the original movie for BtVS came out first, but no one was inspired by that).

I think the main point of this meme is that Buffy would never have tolerated being manipulated and subjugated the way Bella did with Edward. Edward secretly watched Bella sleep ("...just for the last few months...") without ever for a split second considering that maybe Bella would prefer that he didn't do that. That is a pretty big violation, in my opinion. It's not particularly harmful, perhaps, but it's very disrespectful. It means that it doesn't even occur to him to consider her preferences. Here we see Angel treating Buffy with far more respect than that.

Ah epsiode 7 "Angel" as a teenage boy when this first aired I also was heartbroken by this episode but not for the same reasons - R.I.P Darla a cool Vampire (played by a great actor in Julie Benz) At the time I could see the chemistry between Angel and Buffy but still felt it was very creepy that an older man was stalking a 16 year old even before we found he was a vampire and much much older 🤣🤣🤣

Like many people have said, Twilight and many other shows were without a doubt heavily inspired by Buffy. If you had seen those shows, you are going to see a lot of familiar ideas/themes/characters in Buffy, but Buffy was the o.g and in many cases, in my opinion, did them the best.

It is arguable as to whether Buffy gets “better”. It is not arguable as to whether Buffy gets richer. It clearly does. One of the reasons it does is because it builds on what came before which allows the show to develop character, mythological, and metaphorical arcs and, as a consequence, greater complexity. The tonal complexity, gender complexity, genre complexity, narrative complexity, all things Buffy is known for, is already in place in Buffy in the first episode. The problem here is that today’s “kiddies”, even those who actually went to colleges, colleges which are increasingly devolving to high schools, do not grasp how classic narrative, the narrative bedrock of classic books by Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky, for example, works and functions. The Buffyverse is the blueprint for all your modern day vampire books and live action series: Twilight, Vampire Diaries. Once you get further down the rabbit hole you'll see the reference. You already saw how Stefan is like Angel. Julie Plec, Caroline Dries, and the twilight writer Stephanie (whatever her last name is, Moyer or something) basically ripped off arcs and character personalities from this show. I am SOOO excited for you to get deep into the lore and major story arcs in other seasons. You're gonna wish it never ends when the time comes.

I'm curious how Angel was able to enter Buffy's house when the three were chasing them. He ran in right behind Buffy and she didn't verbally invite him. Is he different than other vampires because of his curse or did I miss something that better explains this. I don't think Buffy's attraction to him would be enough to allow him entry without express invitation, would it? And I wouldn't really care except they really make a big deal about Darla needing to be invited inside by Buffy's mother. Otherwise, I thought this was a really good episode and I am enjoying your reactions! Keep it up!

Absolutely no doubt that this was the episode that made Buffy a certain hit, but more than twenty-five years later, after I had finally started watching the show, I still find Angel as uninteresting as all but a couple of the male leads in kdramas. This first season is actually; against the tide, my second favourite season and, despite Angel, this is one of the best eps of the season. Two of my favourite Buffy characters; my second sexiest male character, and one of my favourite secondary characters has appeared, with two more to come this season. I think more than a dozen; maybe as many as twenty of my fanfics are set during this season - or inspired by it, but despite liking this episode, and loving this season I do not like Angel himself, and the whole Angel & Buffy thing was probably one of the reasons why it took me so long to start watching the show. kerk

There is a saying: Buffy ran, so that Twilight could crawl. Budapest (where I happen to live) is a pretty nice place. Europe that doesn't try too hard to be Western. I've heard (not confirmed) that Darla was supposed to be in the show longer. But Julie Benz pretty much antagonized everyone on the set, behaving like a total diva. So, they killed Darla and fired Benz. It helped her; she did a lot of soul searching, and came out of it a very nice person.

Sorry to disappoint, but Twilight aren't vampire, so weird Demon that drink blood and live long, but no vampire. Vampires are creature of the night, no some weird diamond creature that shine in the light.

The first great episode, IMO, and a real turning point in the tone of the show. We get the first real sense of how sadistically cruel vampires can be as opposed to just predatory...and that's revealed through a sympathetic character's backstory. The chemistry between SMG and Boreanz is something else, making their goodbye very bittersweet. Of course, later that night the Master, in his fury over the loss of Darla, and knowing where Buffy lives, sent all his minions to surround and set fire to her house, killing her and Joyce. So the next episode we get a new Slayer and a different series name...

Angel is one of the best episodes of S1. His back story and flashbacks are one of the great things about the Buffyverse. We now know Angel is a vampire, but of course a very different one as he has a soul, but is tortured by his past deeds. As I said before great to see you are so enthusiastic about this show, and is it just gets better and better. Great that you didn't know Angel was a Vampire until the reveal. The Seasons following have a much bigger budget, and incredible writers with better special effects and cinematography. Enjoy your further journey.

@phillipray4380 good point. But if someone hasn't seen the show, why would they watch a reaction to a mid-season episode of the show? And they wouldn't know anything about the characters until they actually started watching the show - and it isn't like the show itself doesn't present them as a possible love interest in the earlier episodes. I mean, don't most thumbnails provide some insight to a show that, in the very strictest sense could be considered a spoiler if someone wanted to watch the show completely blind? The main thing is not to spoil things for the reactor. Random people scrolling through YT have to take their chances.
