My 2004 Honda CRV is a stealth camper. Because it's also something of a family car, I had to ensure it could still carry passengers so I took half of the rear seats out and built a raised platform from 2x4s, wide enough to fit a narrow twin mattress on top. It can still carry two passengers that way. I also secured a solar panel to the roof connected to a small battery bank, and a fresh water tank and gray water tank connected to a crude sink that I can access by flipping the mattress up. I use a 12V rice cooker and freeze dried food for when I don't feel like going out to eat. Diesel heater for when it gets very cold, although most of the time a winter sleeping bag is all you need. Have had this set up for 3 years now, I have no regrets. the car has 250k miles on it, even if it breaks down tomorrow it will have still been worth it, I can't count the number of times I've visited friends or relatives with tiny shoebox apartments with no room for guests, or been posted to remote locations for my job, or even when I just want to visit a nice campground and don't want to haul a tent with me. I've never been bothered by anyone while camping, simply because I've never met anyone who could even tell that the car was modified without me telling them.

Scotty is right that most people wouldn't expect to see somebody living in a small car. Although these days it might be more common. Tips for being stealthy; Don't park in front of somebody's house unless there is no other option. Don't park in the same place two nights in a row unless it is some public area by a parking lot. Park near apartment complexes. Cars change a lot in such areas. Yours won't stand out if you remain inside with the windows blacked out. Don't make noise and don't dump things on the ground. Move to your sleeping spot late in the evening after most people are indoors for the evening.

Owner here, I just use it for solo trips long distance. But I did still have it in in July. I was going to meet my dad in another town. I got to his friend's house too late and slept in the street. Neighbors blasting big fireworks right outside the car. 3 am. I'm undressed under the blankets. Cop kept driving by. I flashed my lights to try help him out if I could get him to stop by me , but I still couldn't get his attention.

Well, that is definitely something you don't see every day. Because of the size I never would have thought about turning a Honda Civic into an RV. Most people get vans or pick-up trucks for their custom camping builds. This is a great concept for someone who travels solo though.
@censored4christ162

I was traveling and when you do the math of hotel cost vs gas it saves a lot of money to sleep in ypur car and you can travel to farther places for less money. So i saw these certain older generation prius that were really ugly happdned to have seats that folded pretyy darn flat and people were putting beds and microwaves back in there. I just think we dont have many vehicles that look like those old vw vans becsuse that shape wpould cater well for traveling compared to a civic. The nice thing about car camping is its easier to blend in. Sedans are also common vehicles. Not that many people buy a camper van in comparison and they dont make many. Most people seem to be saving money car camping or buildimg their own. I see people will go with trucks and those bed campers. Thats interesting ifes to me too because if you have land you could drop your camper and still use your truck. Problem is also they are inefficient. People who want a bed in a vehicle want it because they intend on traveling.

Scotty! I have a 2006 chevy aveo hatchback, I want to share with you the list of parts I've been able to replace by living out of a similar setup with a solar panel on top: New alternator New starter New power steering pump/serp belt New water pump New timing belt Two new catalytic converters New thermostat Various hoses and seals New tie rods New wheel bearings New steering knuckles New axles New tires New windshield This car has been my little project for the past two years, it has been a good horse. I'm sitting at 216k miles currently, there's a rough idle and after long drives on the hotter days it's puking up a little coolant but otherwise I'd say it's going strong. Plus with the solar connected to my aux power units I haven't paid for electricity for two years, I've actually jumped my car off my solar battery when I forgot the keys in once. Any recommendations what I should replace next? Love seeing you supportive of this kind of stuff , a lot of people are judgemental but also more and more people are having no place to go, and as you pointed out a regular car is very discreet and convenient.

50k miles nomading around the U.S. & I've never been "ticketed" at a Walmart. It's Ridiculous. It's a private company & property, they have no authority to hand out tickets! Only once, at 1am, did I get a little knock on my window by a flunky Walmart security guard who said that that particular Walmart didn't allow overnight parking. It's tricky now with Walmart, most locations have the "no overnight parking" signs up in their lots, but in actuality some still overlook ppl quietly stealth camping overnight. ***Don't abuse this privilege!!! Otherwise Walmart will REALLY crack down & have a ZERO parking overnight policy.

Scotty and followers.. what are your thoughts on a 23 Forester with the naturally aspirated 2.5? My wifes 2012 Sonata hybrid has been an absolute mess of a car. Finally junked it this weekend and really dont want another piece of junk. Are subaru CVTs reliable? We went thru 2 engines, 2 transmissions and 2 hybrid batteries (if not more) within 120k...

Hey Scotty, would you be able to share the specs on the mattress and support? Also where did the windshield shade come from?
@joek9542
@joek9542 7 ай бұрын
Hello, the owner here. I can't remember what the website was when I ordered it. It's a rigid foldable type. Easy to to put back in the case and still holds up good 7 years later. The support I just cut a couple pieces of 1x3 boards off an old bed across the floor. Bolted them down, measured for the nextfew pieces and assemble a little at a time. 2 beams vertical across the top and plywood over that going around the rear of the center console a little. 3 in. High density foam on the wood frame. 2 pieces of foam glued togather and sculpted to fit over the gas tank (rear seat cushion removed), and a small piece in the trunk to level it across. I cut a piece of cardboard the exact size I needed for the top layer. Its not square by any means to fit around the console and around the seat pillar. I took it to a mattress store. Beds by design in fargo,ND. They sent it to Soiux Falls SD. Sent back a synthetic foam of some kind , I can't remember what it was called, already apalstured. Slides in through the trunk. The side windows are just cardboard wrapped in fabric with a spray glue. It's like silk or something like that. Expensive but I was looking for the darkest material to look like tinted out windows.

I know that you don’t like the keyless start, but let me tell you why I love it. Living here in Phoenix Arizona, it’s wonderful to be able to start the car by pressing a button on my key fob, while standing in my bedroom, or while coming out of a store or the gym. It also allows me to leave the car running and locked with my dog inside and the air conditioning blasting

@@richsweeney1115 Definitely true and it has its advantages. I still prefer the keys, at least the ones with the transponder chips inside like my 99' Accord. They're harder to steal because you can't start the car without it

@@mikelarry2602 There we’re swamp coolers. And before that, the reason that everybody has a rock metal screen door on the front of the house, is to take a wet bedsheet and hang it over the top and close the door. This was the practice prior to electricity

I love my civic 💙 I had a beat up Accord before my civic and despite all the problems due to the previous owners neglect, the car kept ticking lol it would stall and I would just pull over, turn it back on and it kept driving. 😭 the throttle body was dirty. Cleaned that and it stopped stalling. Still had problems but it kept going at 250,000 miles 😭
