Personal and professional opinion (I'm a retired veterinarian and goat farmer): Get a used microscope and learn how to do fecal checks to make sure your worm load doesn't skyrocket. Goats are extremely sensitive to parasites (intestinal worms & coccidia), especially in the South. If that wether is infested, he is pooping out worm eggs all over your pasture. You can fecal checks for your cows, goats, pigs, poultry, dogs & cats. You can find used textbooks online for veterinary parasitology that can help you learn how to use the microscope and ID the parasite eggs.

And THAT is EXACTLY WHY, our neighbors used a cow hobble to milk their cow. It’s like handcuffs for a cow….prevents them from kicking the milk can and taking off. Our neighbor allowed us when we were five-years-old, to put the hobble on their cow….really simple.

When I started milking my cow instead of my goats, I kept my goats because I feel they really help with maintaining my pastures along with the cows, alpacas, and chickens. Plus, I just plain love them! I don't breed anymore though. Hope your back is healing.

Time for a milk stantion, if she had of side stepped the other way she would have mowed you down, stepped on you. It's only smart to be as safe as possible when dealing with large animals. It's not worth the risk. No matter how gentle a cow is, you always want to be safe from just this sort of thing.

I was growing up in Hungary that means Christmas tree comes on the 24th December about 6pm. Kids are out of the house so when they come home and the bell rings in the family room means the Angel bought the tree with all the presents so you can go in the room and start opening the them. It was magical time. I wish I can go back and revisit those times.

Just a note on the Christmas tree comment. The room our Christmas tree goes in is never used (except at Christmas) so we never take it down (we have an artificial tree due to allergies) is has been up for about 10 years now, still decorated from when the grandkids last did it. 😂

Dr Pol recommends rotating livestock between pastures to cut down on the possibility of parasites. Do this every few weeks (6 - 8). My son raises cattle and we were discussing this very topic about a week ago and he does rotate his cattle between 2 different pastures. Dr Pol suggests dividing one pasture into two if need be.

I had Christmas ornaments dating to the 12th century (family heirlooms) and ones that were at least 200 years old; hand blown glass ... the doves had horsehair tails as did the little rocking horses. They were magical. My mom kept them, and when she died they were supposed to come to me. She had given her keys to "friends" in her neighborhood ... and those friends helped themselves to those ornaments, her mink stole (which I didnt approve of, but hey, it was hers) and some hand carved figurines from Germany that were worth quite a bit, but sentimentally were some of the only memories I had of my father who died when I was a child. I still mourn the ornament, even though I dont celebrate Christmas anymore. They were a part of who I was. So, Jess, I feel your pain.

That is somewhat sad. You must of lived far apart, otherwise ? I got this feeling they don't realize what they took. Anyway they will face judgement day. Remember Jesus didn't have Christmas ornaments, he was the reason, so celebrate him everyday.
@lisajacks7237
@lisajacks7237 2 жыл бұрын
@@k.c.8535 I am totally sure they knew what they took. Mom's place was in N. Florida, and I had moved to Broward County for a job with a large news agency. It was just a couple of hours away, but as her health got really bad, I moved her and her cats in with us in S. Florida. She died in my arms, and it took me a bit to get back to her condo. Meanwhile, her friends were robbing her blind. I called the sheriff's dept and when neighbors saw their cars at the condo, they of course came over to be nosy. They were standing there when I said if the items missing showed by back up by 5 pm the next day, I wouldnt file charges. We got almost everything back except the Hummel sculptures. The neighbor who took the most declared mom would have let him have the items he took, and I informed him that what he took was mine from my father and grandfather that I let mom "keep" to enjoy and remember them by and that she would never have given family heirlooms to strangers... I later found out this individual opened mom's house for his niece and cousin who were setting up their first apartment. Imagine the nerve it took... I never got the Christmas ornaments back... and we dont celebrate Christmas. It still had sentimental value. Christmas, or celebrating with lights on trees actually is pre-Christian pagan/wiccan origin, in case you didnt know. Early Christians did not celebrate the birth of Jesus, which actually was sometime in the spring. JFYI

Have you ever made butter from all your milk. I remember being in the 2nd grade and our teacher had us make butter. She passed around a jar full of milk and had us take turns shaking it. When it finally turned to butter we each got to sample of the butter (unsalted) on a saltine cracker. I still remember how delicious it was and it been many many years.

When you experience losing milk for your own baby that you were pumping at 2am, then you’ll REALLY know what that meaning feels like 🤣😩. Even losing a single drop is a big deal. And I’ve spilled a whopping 5 ounces a couple times right after pumping. But even when daddy warmed them up to bottle feed occasionally, he KNEW that every drop was considered GOLD. 🤣

The highlight of Thanksgiving was us kids decorating the tree at my nana's house while she fixed dinner. She would make such a big fuss over what a wonderful job we had done. She always knew how to make you feel like you could do nothing wrong. What we didn't catch on to for years was that she was a real perfectionist about how the tree was decorated. She would wait until we had all left (there were 6 of us kids) and she would strip and redecorate the tree. So funny. My goodness how I miss her. Blessings to you and yours, g.

We are Catholic and typically don't start Christmas decorations until Christmas season, which starts December 24 and lasts until the feast of the Epiphany ,January 6 (or the baptism of Christ by St. John in February). I had to LOL at that statement as well. Actually, it probably was not an exaggeration, though. I was out west last year, and it was EXACTLY like that; 3 seasons in one day. I called it Pshyco weather (I'm from sunny Florida, lol). Out west it would be chilly autumn like weather in the morning warming up to almost 80 by mid day, and then sometimes snowing in the afternoon and/or evening. ABQ, NM. Very cool to experience, though. I loved it while I was there.

One thing to watch for after worming a heavy worm load is bleeding where the worms were attached. We always use some cayenne tincture to prevent/stop the bleeding. When I first learned of this from our goat mentor I thought it was cruel. Just the opposite. It’s also great for new moms. We use all natural wormer.

As to deworming the goats: Many feed their chickens DE to eliminate any intestinal parasites. Some humans who eat raw fish & raw meat consume DE for the same reason. It can also be used to prevent any infestation, by eating or drinking DE periodically. So being fed DE probably works for goats as well, longterm, when it's mixed into their feed.

If you do pool samples on goat poo every 6m or so you'll get a good idea whats happening so it doesn't get to the point they're anaemic from worms. I agree with the comment above that on a pasture you may get more rather than less. Using different wormers can help stop the resistance. They all look great though. Can't wait to see the goat kids! Hey Jess, just wanted to make a short comment on goat deworming. I know before your goats were mostly likely grazing on hay, and now they're likely exclusively grazing on fresh grass. I'm no goat expert, but I do know there is suppose to be something about goats grazing on grass that makes them extra wormy. Grass as opposed to brambles, weeds, viney trees and things. Worms are more prevalent on the grass, and the more woody bramble stuff might have chemicals that naturally help the goats with worm infestation. Anyway hope this helps. May God bless your herd :)
@julieogden4050
@julieogden4050 2 жыл бұрын
I am also not a goat expert. You are correct in assuming that natural grazing vs feeding hay will introduce the likelihood of more worms in their system (parasite load) because now they are eating off the ground (where they defecate) vs. from feeders. However, because you plan on rotating your livestock into different pastures- the longer you can let a pasture rest the better off you'll be.

I'm glad you got back to milking. It's not always easy to do that. I couldn't milk like you do, I'd need a stanchion in a bard so I could find the cow. LOL life as a legally blind person. I prefer using the milking machine. YOu did a find job Jess.

I like your TN orange wagon or trailer however you refer to it. TN fan here. Of course Roots and Refuge is way up toward top favorite channel. Loved how you handled the spilled milk. Blessings.

Thank you for all the great information today not that I’m going to use any of it because I live in city and I’m not gonna get any animals except may be a dog or cat on my property but I still love hearing you explain stuff and giving me great ideas and tips hugs and kisses from grandma Sandy and

I’m not a Christmas before Thanksgiving person either. In fact, when our local big box stores put up Christmas stuff before HALLOWEEN even, I rolled my eyes so hard, they nearly got stuck…

For me, it is way too much work to put up Christmas decorations and only spend about a month looking at them and enjoying them, so I put that stuff up before Thanksgiving because it takes me a couple of weeks to get it all up.

If you keep the high tunnels in ground planting, you could over winter your chickens in there and possibly the pigs. Just a thought.

I understand your feeling with the time. Took grandkids to the zoo yesterday, I have a two yr old animal lover lol. But we ate took the greats back to their mom and driving on the road it was so dark and felt late. Only 6:30...im 63 and it has really messed with my internal clock. Jess I love how you explain and teach. You stand by your convictions but never judge. Blessings 🙌

Hey Jess! Thanks for all you do & share. Man these comments can get downright nasty but you pay no mind! You're doing a great job! I just wondered though, is Gabriel limping a little bit? It's sometimes easy to miss because they get so good at hiding their pain. Hope he is okay, he's a beautiful creature. ❤️❤️❤️

The day after Thanksgiving was always almost a holiday for us and I keep it going. Hot cider in the crock pot and cookies and thin mints out all day and Christmas music on the stereo and we decorate the several Christmas trees and the house. It was always one of my favorite days of the year. Better than crowding in at the shopping mall for sure.

I am so glad you stopped and visited with the goats. It seems like ages since we've seen them. I honestly love cows and have since I was very small, but you have made me fall in love with goats and now that I have - you only visit and talk with your cow! NOT FAIR! LOL - I miss those mornings of you opening your gate and being swarmed by all those babies and their mamas. I hope your living so far from them now doesn't mean we'll never see something like that again.

FYI. All the time my dad just used stool he make of 2x4 pieces made in shape of T. So you have your two legs and third leg is leg of T. You make it how tall you want from ground to your bottom in squat position. Get up great content. Thank God bless your family. Danny

Something to think about in the High Tunnels is Your getting older. The Raised Beds are easier on the Body as we age. Plus you do such large Gardens I think it would be much easier on you if you continued to do Raised Beds. That's how your used to gardening also. It's a lot harder on your body because your up an down on your hands an knees to do in ground gardens versus Raised Beds where your doing all those except not as far up an down if you catch my drift. Love watching you build this new Homestead. God Bless and Peace from WV

I like to hear about the care routines just as reassurance. There are some people who have done it their way and will fight to death about their way. When I got my goats I checked with their owners and they were all wormed chemically as needed (and before/after birth) but the worst I felt as an owner was selling a baby to a couple who told me I was horribly wrong for not worming a kid at 6 weeks and then every month after and I went back to the drawing board and researched and came out with my sake belief of worming as needed. I made sure to tell them I had continued that protocol from previous owners and liked it myself.

I like how you want to raise and keep superior and more natural animals. We like to do the same thing and in our occasional replacement does we select for hardiness, bone, conformation, good milker, great attitude, and a wonderful mother. We sold the queen doe a couple years ago who was a great milker. Two reasons were she didn’t like to take the herd out to pasture preferring hanging around the barn waiting for feed and hay, and she didn’t want to nurse her triplets, nearly rejecting a doeling. She was registered and a third freshener. She was a much better match for her new home. I highly recommend Natural Goat Care by Pat Coleby. Prevent worms and correct other issues with natural vitamins, minerals, etc.
