You may want to see about getting some used glass pickle jars, like the gallon ones. A lot of restaurants have them and will sell them cheap or just give them to you. That's what a lot of our dry good are in, since they have a rubber gasket at the top and can seal air tight if you use oxygen absorbers.

@@caitlynsmithlifeonthefarm we let them sit in baking soda, completely covered and immersed for a few days, up to a week, then we get them out and hit them with ACV and it bubbles all the odor away, then you just was with soap and water to get any residual smell. It works pretty well if it still has any odor, repeat. It can be a pain sometimes but we prefer to store stuff in glass and they are cheap if not free.

1) Jars are a hot commodity, AMEN on that one! 2) In 2017, I Inherited all the jars that had been my grandmother’s and mother’s. With what I had already collected over 35 years of canning, I really thought I would never need more jars. 3) In 2019, a friend’s elderly relative passed. He scarfed up all the jars for me and delivered them in the back end of a pickup. There were so many jars - including 2 of the 1-gallon jars - that I thought there was NO WAY to use that many. 4) Enter COVID in 2020 and 2021. Holy smokes! The fruit trees, berry bushes, and two garden plots (6700 sq ft) on our property produced like gangbusters. Like a crazy woman, I canned everything in sight - going DEEP into using all those canning jars. It also allowed me to share several quarts of spaghetti sauce with the friend who gave me the excess jars.. 5) Another friend used up the last her canning jars and lamented the inability to find anything in the stores. Having so many jars, made it possible to share a case with her so that she could finish up what she needed. ✝️ We felt blessed and protected. Best wishes from Kate in Olympia, WA - 11/3/2021

I learned this trick too when my jars of bone broth would crack even with plenty of headspace. Before putting in the freezer, I refrigerate so it's completely chilled. Then I place the lids on top loosely without screwing them down. I notice after freezing, there is a little pointed tip that rises up from the center of the liquid, which I'm sure was the pressure that cracked the glass.

The way that jar broke was from thermal shock. Be careful where you place the jars straight out of the refrigerator. You might want to put a folded towel down before placing the jar on your counter since the counters are wood. They hold a bit of warmth, unlike stone or stainless steel. Even just a degree of difference can cause a jar to break from thermal shock.
@shelbyfeinberg496
@shelbyfeinberg496 2 жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t think a jar should break that easily from thermal shock, unless it was already weakened. I pre-chill my milk jars in the freezer while I milk, then strain my milk into the cold jar to help cool it a bit faster. The milk is presumably still 90 degrees or warmer by the time I strain it into the frozen jar, and I’ve never had one crack. When I forgot and let the milk freeze last weekend though… Well, that was a disaster.
@bncsmom1
@bncsmom1 2 жыл бұрын
@@shelbyfeinberg496 It can and does happen. It's not often but it happens. I've had it happen when I put jars that cooled down a few degrees into a canner because I didn't follow recommendations to NOT stage the jars. I'd line up three jars and by the time they got back into the canner, POP! There goes the bottom. I don't do that anymore so haven't had thermal shock breaks in a while.

In 953 my Dad built a four cow raised platform milking parlor. Now you don't need a parlor for 4 cows, but a one stanchion in a corner of room in the barn would be easily done. Ramp up, ramp down. Even a one step up (no ramps needed) would be a big help. Just a note. Your back is still young now, but years pass quickly. Love your vlog.

I got my first chickens in March of this year. I started with eight. A hawk (really, a kite) got one, and an owl got one. So I put netting over the whole pen (70’ x 32’) and haven’t had any problem since. They finally started laying and we get 4 to 6 eggs a day. It’s only me and my husband at home, so we spread the “wealth” to our families when we have too many. I really enjoy having the chickens. We also put in a garden last spring for the first time. It didn’t do great except for the cucumbers, because it rained way more than it usually does. We had our average yearly total by July. We hope to do better next spring. Thanks for inspiring us.

I buy pickles at Costco by the gallon. Then you can use the jar for milk. Dual purposing

I cool my milk the way the Rhodes do. I put half gallon jars of milk In cooler of ice water right after milking…. Then you can forget about it and not worry. I use plastic liter bottles filled with water to freeze then just change them out to keep water in cooler ice cold. Works great for chilling milk fast. Then you won’t have to worry about broken jars.. Great channel, you guys inspire me!

For several years I have been saving my large pickle jars and wasn’t sure why but now I am glad. I have about 15 or 20 of them now for storing food in

Those big, one-gallon, thick plastic pitchers with lids are also a great storage option for milk! Makes it a little easier to pour from than the heavy glass jars, and slightly more readily available (if you have a thrift store nearby, they seem to always have them!)

You may want to make sure your jars are tempered glass. Going from cow's body temperature to freezer may be what broke your let broke your jar. Canning jars are tempered glass.

Buy pickles, eat pickles, clean jar with baking soda... Three times, now you have a big old hefty jar. I use mine to make kombutcha and homemade vinegar as well as to store sugar, flour and popping corn. My daughter keeps her beta fish in one. They are great.

When people spill their alcohol, they say "alcohol abuse" - When you spill milk it must be "milk abuse" or esp. in your case 'save the milk'! Hope you heal quickly and find the Chiropractor the Lord wants for you!

Buy a gallon jar of pickles. Eat the pickles (or feed them to the pigs or whatever), then clean out the jar. Much cheaper than $50 a pack.

For freezer storage, I've been reusing plastic coffee creamer jars, peanut butter jars, etc. Never glass! I use these for apple smoothies, but they-especially the coffee creamer jars-would be especially useful, given that they come with pour-top lids. I reuse glass jars too, but only for dry goods stored at room temperature.

In the old days... my grandma had this container to separate cream. It looked like a Berkley filter sans the filter part and it had a glass window at the bottom to know when to stop the tap while pouring milk. Grandpa would drop it in the well to cool and pull it up when cream separated.

Look @ estate sales. Once upon a time...long long ago vinegar came in glass gallon jars that a small mouth Mason lid will fit . I'm sure you will find an old timer who still has some. Maybe use 1 or 2 gallon plastic food grade buckets to store in freezer. Transfer to glass when thawed.

Jess...I don't know what all Justin showed you while you were guests at his cottage; but after he started moving his cows around his property, he built a portable stantion so he could move it with his cows & not have to wrestle them down to the barn. It's on skids & can be easily moved with your cart. You can make the roof as wide as you want so you are protected from the elements year round. Might be worth researching & considering. If all else fails, it could be a stepping stone to moving your cow into a stantion in the barn!!! It's just a thought that I haven't heard you mention. Also Sweet Miah would have the option to build it for you!!! 😍 ❤️ 💋

Thank U for the update. I like all the changes both for the adjustments, the careful purchases and enjoyment from the kids along with Ur husband announcing his plans. All Ur plans sound very exciting, the reality of doing chores with a back out was rough. Wish I could have helped (there are ways to relax the strained muscles to relieve pain naturally). Anyway I guys are utterly amazing too. Smile.

If you call Pizza places ask them for their empty jars. You will be amazed on how many jars you can get for free. They are either gallon or half gallon jars. The jars where filled with either olives green or black. Peppers & so on. That is where I get my gallon jars or half gallon jars for pickling my veggies. Hope this helps ya.

Did you try resting your back by lying flat on the floor? You put your legs up on a chair or sofa, with your knees bent, you know, like in a "sitting" position. So you're resting your calves on the chair or sofa. It allows your back to rest and lie there straight. Hope you are feeling better.
