The best advice I ever received after moving to the country and having animals: Good fences make good neighbors. Lack of good fences will result in broken neighbor relations that can last for YEARS...

Unless your neighbor has adolescent children who want to race motorcycles or 4 wheelers in your pasture. They'll likely cut the fence and expect you to still repair it after their fun... Or you'll be to blame if the cows or pigs get out through the hole that they cut "just to have some fun" -- or maybe your fence maintenance just wasn't that good. That's what's so bad about the dogs mentioned -- they get to roam free to "do their business" and "socialize" at the expense of a neighbor or the neighbor of a neighbor. That's why a good long range 22 caliber or 30/30 is so good to have, but use of such a weapon may traumatize their children. In many cases you can use a donkey or a camelid (e.g., an alpaca or llama) as a guardian animal against dogs or coyotes.

@@richardmassoth8237 sometimes a pellet gun is enough of a deterrent. I would definitely take some pretty definite steps to get the dog situation under control… we had a neighbor kid start letting their lab and hound out and in two trips they wiped out our whole flock. Even with the chickens in our goat proof pasture.

Hey Miah- when you put those bat houses up be sure to put them up high enough to allow for swoop room. Does this make sense? They should be mounted in an area that gets 6-8 hours of direct sunlight (facing either East or South). 20 to 30 ft. from tree branches or other obstacles and 12 to 20 ft above the ground.

NO TO THE BAT HOUSE! Hey guys, you don't want to put your bat house on the side of your pumphouse. It will probably not get used. Your bat house should be about 12-20 ft high with 6-8 hours of direct sunlight a day. Bats are cool but they're very picky about their habitat. You can probably Google it but if memory serves me correctly that's what I learned when mine filled up with wasps instead of bats. Lol

We have bird dogs with strong prey drive, but we have taught them that chickens aren’t prey. They leave our chickens at the farm alone, and the neighbor’s chickens at the house (two different properties) alone as well. We have ducks as well. Dogs are smart. Ours know the difference between wild ducks and our ducks. Of course, they will stand outside the rabbit pen and point for hours, lol. But even when they have gotten into the rabbit pen, they run and point and wait for a command to take it. Responsible dog owners teach and train and work with their dogs.

My dad told me that when dogs get the taste of blood from killing animals they will always kill, especially if their are two or more of them together. What a shame that you have neighbors like that. I've found over the years of living in areas where people let dogs wander, that no matter how friendly or well behaved your dog is, they develop a "pack mentality" when they gather in groups. They will attack other animals, including large livestock especially during birthing times. Ranchers here have calves, goats and other young animals killed and older cattle and horses mauled severe enough to have to be put down, by "friendly" family pets... it's never a good idea to let your dogs roam.

I was SURE the wild mallard had a flock that got eaten, hence him being so excited to see the new birds. Unfortunately, that happens 😥. Can you build a temporary coop for the ducks for nights?

Jess, In putting up Bat houses remember, to be sure to put them a good distance from your livestock and living areas. They are FANTASTIC to have around though. Blessings Laurel 💗

Have several motion lights around your place, they will alert you if there are predators around, I believe they have some with house chimes also. ❤️

Over here in the Netherlands some farmers make housing for the pigs with strawbales, with a tarp on top. Works fine! Next year you can use the straw for mulch.. they like to snuggle up in there and even get the piglets in there. They are not that high that you can stand up in it.

My favorite tree - weeping willow ❤ I grew up always calling it a hippy tree since I was born in '62 bummer about your birds getting knocked off by the dogs 😔 hopefully that issue gets resolved. And just have to say, you two are the cutest couple 💑 and with the cutest kids 💕❤♡

Katie did manage to pick the best family and little boy she could find. She’s one lucky pup to have a family that cares about her and a little boy to run around with.

Irrigation is super important, I learned a lot from watching Aaron and Laura from Garden Answer, really helps in trouble shooting and knowing what to buy for which areas.

I've always been concerned that the high tunnels right at the front block your view of who's coming through the gate and onto your property.
