I always thought I was the only one this happened to. Moderately hidden misogyny teen girl (liked horrible memes, watched bad masculine influence youtubers, hated on feminine pop-culture, that yikesy stuff), and I didn't acknowledge it. Years of growing out of that mindset and having a bit of hindsight, all I had left was the dysphoria that assisted in making me feel that way. There were other factors (such as those aforementioned bad influence youtubers... I feel like I wasted a big part of my life letting their voices get into my psyche), but dysphoria is the only one I still deal with to this day.

I asked my teenage niece why she was wearing makeup when she wasn't going anywhere. "Because I want to." I almost said something like it's a waste of time and money and etc, but geez that would've turned me into my mother, and I caught myself and instead said "that is a valid reason." I will NOT become my mother and help give her body image issues.

I used to muck horse stalls at a farm for my day job and one of the other women there always came to work wearing lipstick. One day I asked her why on earth she'd wear lipstick to a barn? And her reply completely changed my attitude about people who won't leave the house without makeup. "I have four kids and a husband to get out of the house, putting on lipstick is the only thing I do every morning that is just for ME." I just wish it hadn't taken me 20 years of scoffing at makeup to learn this.

I have a similar fight to fight - my mom thankfully didn’t give me body image issues but she projected hers onto strangers’ appearances. I’m still trying to remember myself regularly that women can express themselves however they want and that the girliest of fashionistas and the un-girliest of tomboys can become great friends because appearance =/= character and mindset. However, it’s still hard sometimes to not be judgmental first and fall back to stereotypes. Luckily my mom is working on herself in therapy and (hopefully) addressing all of her internalised misogyny and I believe we will both turn out okay :)

Honestly good on you for catching yourself, I’m someone who almost exclusively wears makeup at home because I use it as a creative outlet when I’m bored. Usually when I go out my face is bare, it confuses people but I always just tell them “I do it for myself, makeup is fun!”. I love playing around with different styles, to me makeup is just painting with my face in place of the canvas. Again good on you for being cognizant of how your words could effect your niece, that’s genuinely admirable! 🥰👍

The assumption it meant you were better came from outsiders saying that trying to be different or pointing out how you were different counted as you thinking you were better than others for making those different choices. You know like how someone might ask your opinion on something and if you truthfully say its not something you personally like/you think its bad, then they respond with "well I'd like to see you do better" as if you weren't actually supposed to state an opinion? That kind of person took "I don't fit in with others, probably undiagnosed autistic or ADHD kid" and twisted it into "this person wants to make it clear they're different and therefore better". Its weird.

@@AlexaFaie THANK you. I am seeing an AWFUL lot of demonising of these so-called 'NLOGs' and it honestly just looks like repackaged mean girl bullying. Bully them for being different. Bully them for acknowledging and not being sufficiently shamed by their difference. Circulate stories about how you used to be different yourself until you had the realisation that being not-different was better for reasons. I'm all for everyone being valid. GIrly girls are valid. Girls who aren't girly are valid. People who are girly but aren't girls are valid. People who are not girly and also not girls are also valid. ALL are allowed to be proud of who they are without it being an indictment of anyone else. Girls (and boys and enbies, etc) who are 'weird' or 'alternative' or 'goth' or otherwise non-mainstream get bullied and picked on a lot for who they are and what they like. They're told every day how they aren't like other kids, aren't like the other boys, aren't like the other girls. Of course they know. Why shouldn't they be proud of this thing other people try to make them ashamed of? I find it baffling.

@@misamisaa4547 The Rapunzel movie have me a lot of mixed feelings because I'm an older Millennial who was told as a kid that I was ugly because I had brown hair. So seeing a lot of blond girls on Twitter lament the ending of Tangled where she ends up with short brown hair by talking about how they'd cry if they ended up with ugly brown hair, just made me sad. Not even for myself, because I was in my 20s by then and didn't care what a bunch of kids thought of my hair color, but for other kids their age who didn't have blond hair! Because they were going to see that and I knew how it'd make them feel because I was those girls 20 years before. Which is also how girls like that go through a "I'm not like other girls" phase when they reach their teen years. It's partially to fit in with the Cool Girl idea and be accepted by men, but also a pushback against all the messages that we deal with from such an early age about not measuring up to feminine ideals, which is why so many of these memes feature a thin, blond, conventionally pretty girl.

As a goth I believe that you can't be goth and judgmental. Sometimes romanticising death and the darker things in life. At times singing in morbid tones and using instruments to vibrate those tones and messages through to the audience like scything on the guitar and pulsing basslines are part of what makes goth music. The thing I hate about the “not like other girls shit” is that I can’t even talk about legit issues that I had with being different in my small town and being bullied for it, because it sounds like I’m just saying the whole “I’m not like other girls” but in my case, I genuinely was not! I played football, I was gay, and I questioned my faith. In a town where everybody has to fit in, everyone is catholic, and being different simply isn’t an option. I was bullied so bad I ended going to the mental hospital, and eventually had to switch schools, all because the people at my school couldn’t handle someone different from the norm. And because of this whole thing, talking about these issues I faced can sound like I’m one of these girls saying I’m “not like other girls”

Having felt like I wasn't like the other girls it was never a desire to stand out. It was a desire to be true to myself and the things I liked, not out of a sense of trying to appeal to anyone else. I was just an autistic kid noticing that I didn't fit in with the other people who were being socialised as girls. As an adult I've learned more about gender and now see myself as nonbinary (so literally not a girl lol) but at the time I thought I was a girl and I thought I was not like the others simply because of how vastly different I was to everyone else at school. There was never any judgement of anyone else. Simply just noticing the differences and feeling quite alienated because there really was no common ground (though I tried to find some so many times).

I’m in my 50s and same here. Part of it for me was wanting to feel better about being awkward and not fitting in. I’m really happy that my 40s and 50s have been all about just letting myself like what I like without feeling like I needed to apologize for it. Nail polish and lipstick have been part of that, and so has woodworking and heavy metal. There’s a lot of neat stuff in the world for everyone to enjoy. I feel you on that one. Because I was someone who wasn’t stereotypically beautiful and liked things that weren’t on the “popular list,” I often turned to the “not like other girls” line to try and feel good about myself. As I got older, I realized that I’m not going to improve my self-esteem by being judgmental about what other girls and women enjoy. Yeah as a teen I'd really internalized the whole "if you want to get anywhere in life that doesn't involve makeup and babies, you need to be more like a man therefore everything feminine is bad" and that's a really frigging sad statement on how rigid everything seemed at the time. Now I just do what I want to do hobbywise (from auto repair to crocheting) and mostly ignore the people who don't take my ability to do my job seriously because I'm female (though I'm somewhat regularly misgendered because in the trades I work in, there's no practical feminine clothing available so all my workwear comes from the men's department and I rarely leave the house without a ball cap on to keep my hair out of my work). I do what I want to do, and anyone who doesn't like it is invited to please shut up about it.

Heavy metal is considered a type of rock-n-roll. Also, I think the "I like food" thing started out as a slam against diet culture and the idea women shouldn't eat "too much" so they can "stay thin and pretty." But now it's just obnoxious and is just another form of body shaming.

The heavy metal thing bothered me so much! Like asking someone if they like Asian food and when they say yes, your response is "Ugh, sushi is so much better than Asian food though." Bish where you think sushi was invented?? I definitely had a "not like the other girls" phase in high school, but honestly I think a lot of girls do when they're trying to figure things out. There were genuinely a lot of very conventionally attractive girls in my year. Hot, blonde, athletic, all the boxes. I admit that I saw it as sort of a me vs the monolith of girls. Fortunately I grew out of it though and realised we're all just people! PS I was never mean to anyone about it, it was all in my head.

I have literally received replies on Pinterest comments where I talked very factually about the fact that I don't wear makeup in which people have accused me of trying to be like this when I'm just stating a fact. Honestly, there are two main reasons I don't wear makeup and none of them have to do with thinking it's dumb- one, I don't really want to spend time putting it on, and two, I don't like stuff on my face. For context on that last one I’m neurodivergent and it has largely to do with sensory issues. I let my best friends do makeup on me one time years ago, but I didn’t like the way it felt. So, I don’t wear makeup and I probably never will, but that doesn’t mean I would ever slam people who enjoy wearing it. Just let people do what they like, man. Regardless of gender, too. I don’t like wearing makeup but if a boy or enby person wants to wear it as well, then good for them!

Tbh I kind of look at the NLOG thing with some amusement from my perspective bc like. Growing up, I NEVER could meet the expectations of my peers. I was the weird girl with crushes on fictional boys instead of real celebrities and more interested in anime and JRPGs instead of make up and live action teen shows. It wouldn’t be for years later when I figured out my double whammy, I’m autistic (which affects how I fit in alone) and also am nonbinary, so wasn’t even a girl to begin with but never got the vocabulary until college. So until then, NLOG type things and intentionally standing away from the girls who tormented me was a protection thing for me.

My daughter was watching something on Netflix and a character said "we don't need to fight! we're all the same!" so I paused it and explained that's not true - people are not all the same and that's absolutely fine. You don't need to be "the same" in order to not fight with each other. Just respect others. That goes for the "other girls" in "not like other girls". Just respect other people.

If you bring 100 girls my age to meet me, statistically speaking, not a single one would I be able to connect with. I've lived the last 20 years with very severe mental illnesses, in combination with giftedness, and that DOES make me different. Other 36-yo girls want a family and a raise of money at their job etc. I want a good therapist that doesn't trigger my traumas and have more energy so that I can do the laundry without sleeping an hour before and after. Sure, everyone is different, but some are MORE different than others, and to ignore that isn't doing anyone a favour. I cannot feel connection with a healthy person, we've lived too different lives. They talk about work, having children, buying a house etc. I've never done and never will do any of that. The big majority of the population can talk about what it's like to be on a job interview. I've never experienced that. And very few people know what it's like to be sectioned to inpatient care on a psychiatric hospital over and over again for years. I'm not like other girls. I have several disabilities, and that's okay. I'm not better or worse than anyone else, just different. Please don't erase my existence by saying we're all the same, because we're not. Let us disabled people be visible and accepted with our differences.

I consider a "90's kid" as a kid that grew up during and consciously experienced the youth culture of the 90's. If a baby was born in 1998, then the 90's were over and gone before they could form meaningful memories. If they were born the mid-to-late 80's, then they grew up during the 90's, and their childhood memories were all of being a "90's kid".

I always say, "I was like a 90s kid but like not really" because I was born in 2003, but I still grew up with all the normal 90s things. Music, children's toys, and even technology. I think it was a product of growing up in a tiny rural town and not having enough money to afford any newer things. I'm not actually a 90s kid, obviously, but I can relate to a lot of the material things that existed then since that's all I grew up with, lol.

Where's the cutoff, though? I always cringe at the "90s kids" or "80s kids" or whatever memes cuz there's not really a clearly defined line where it's a definite "Yes, you were a 90s kid, but the person born the day after you is a 00s kid." And even if you TRY to make a clear line, it won't work more often than not. Some of the things you associate with the 90s were holdovers from the 80s, some were really only in your local area or your country, some survived well into the 2010s. There's no clear definition here. I have the same gripe with generations- just cuz I was born in the same generation as someone else does not mean we had anywhere near the same experience growing up.

Same. Later I learned I’m under the asexual umbrella (I’m demisexual) and that’s why I never cared to do those things or be like other girls. It’s not that I had hate for them, it’s that I hated that I wasn’t interested in what they were interested in and it lead to a lot of self hate, and I think the “I’m not like other girls” comes from insecurity and trying to tell yourself it’s OKAY if you don’t like the same things as others, it’s okay not to fit in to the group or fit into the stereotypes. I think a lot of NLOG girls are just dealing with the trauma of being outcasted and not feeling like they fit in or belong with any of their peers, so they turn to self hatred and use “I’m not like other girls” as a kind of armor to try to emotionally protect themselves from feeling like there is something fundamentally wrong with themselves if they don’t fit in with “most” other girls. What’s not okay though is putting down anyone else for not liking what you like. So that’s why I really appreciate the memes that emphasize that being either way is okay and acceptable. ❤
