The obvious solution is to read books from the library, only buying them if you really liked it and need to own it. This would save money, and be much more sustainable overall, given how bad books are for the Planet.

@@zoec9598 Most libraries are entirely free of charge (besides late fees). There are other ways to support an author besides physically buying their books. Used book stores do not directly support authors either. Libraries provide an author exposure and money from the library buying their book. Most importantly, not everyone has the space or the money to buy every book they might like, and libraries provide a massively important service to their communities.

I agree that it is a necessary source for most people. I just feel authors couldn't sustain themselves on a library buying only one of their books so I feel physically buying books is also necessary x

Not as satisfying to hold, I admit, but should take care of your objection. Another idea, one which is done small-scale right now, would be to print paper books on demand. Or, we can go crazy and question the whole consumerist capitalist structure...

@@zoec9598 lending books from the libraries does actually support authors. They get paid royalties per loan in most countries, UK included. It's obviously not as much as book purchase but better for the planet. There are also second hand book stores like WOB that pay royalties. It's a myth that the only way to support authors is to buy new
