Whilst my official job role is inspecting finished parts, I occasionally fill in as a trusted second pick for refurbing and re machining engine blocks. I absolutely love watching your videos, and will try to apply what I learn from them in my work. It is so much more tame in comparison to what you do. The level of complexity on those Ferrari heads is something else. Far beyond my abilities. Thank you for providing such high quality, immensely detailed and educational videos. 10/10. I’m sure the torque spec on the plugs would be dry. The oil will cause you to over tighten them.

Yeah I gathered that after I tried torquing them and they would only consistently pull to 8ft/lbs 🤣

Is using a small little hand held pneumatic or hydraulic press a option for installing the guides? What about copper slip? Would copper slip be a good option for installation? Maybe help with thermal heat transfer between the guide and the head? I really enjoy this long format. So much to learn man.

Something not mentioned, Doing the valve job, and especially for the seat centricity, and sinking the valves, with a direct acting valve train / bucket tappets, and valve stem protrusion, to be able to get valve lash. There’s usually a spec for that…

Nice work Josh. I did watch your whole video. There is no way to do short machine shop videos. I tried, seems like I can't do it. Is the stem heights going to make the valve adjustment a tough job? Are the shims under the buckets or on the top. Very nice seat concentricity. This head is no doubt probably better that it was originally. Hope the you and your family had a good Thanksgiving. These are shim over bucket. I told the guy assembling he should take the shims to get one side surface ground to set the lash. And thanks! I was very happy with it all. And we all had a good thanksgiving! I hope you did too. Have a good weekend.

FYI, you can achieve similar results from using dry ice to chill the guides.

HR spacers would be the spacers I would get if I didn´t know better. Should be a top shelf brand. BUT. I´ve seen two sets have play/vibrations. Maybe you´ll get lucky with your set, but make sure they mount snug.

Pretty sure Weingarter does his in a two car garage. He’s got a similar setup as you, but a rottler and not a milling machine. He may have one, but he does mostly valve jobs and ports heads, then flows them. He does have two flow benches.

I somewhat wish that you had removed the spark plug on that one bad valve seat to see if that had any affect on it.

I can do that in a different video. You can usually see that visually by lapping, but I not only forgot to try and show a difference but I also didn’t want to lap any of these valves.

As a head guy myself it’s nice to get new perspectives from others techniques otherwise it’s too easy to get tunnel vision and stick to the “I’ve always done it this way” mentality. Really are quite basic heads with a slightly weird guide and dirt cheap cam studs.

I agree with that! And yeah very basic heads with some weird service procedures. The tolerances for seat depth is a real pain in the butt too. Only +/- .005” available shim thicknesses apparently.

When that car we new in the 80s, it was top quality. Now days the knowledge of the way stuff is way better. Now the quality of the metal makeup is worse. The fe motor in my 65 has a harder tensile strength than the v6 in my 2015 jeep. Redline temp for the truck is 500 degrees and the jeep is 250 degrees. The old truck gets better gas mileage v8 than the jeep, and that's sad
