I owned a Porsche Cayman S and it was completely reliable and had zero unexpected repair costs. Yes, parts are more expensive and maintenance costs a lot… but the performance makes up for it in a "you need to pay to play sort of way." You do NOT need to pay $20K/year to maintain a Porsche, more like $1000.

It doesn't matter where the ignition key is. The car should start reliably and not be left in the workshop. Porsches are difficult to maintain and expensive. Therefore, owners leave them in their garage and don't use them. Of course, after 10 years they still look like new...

@Will_Moffett

Don't think the "look it up" part is really necessary. I mean the alternative to what you are saying being true is that you make up very specific fabrications about the reasons why Porsches are designed in a specific way. It's physically possible for you to do that, but it would be the kind of insane that has yet to be documented.

Recently I saw a late 70s/early80s 911 turbo that looked like it had just rolled out of the factory. I really liked them from that time. I really don't get it when someone spends big money on a car like this and then never drives it. The worst thing you can ever do with a car is to let it sit for long periods of time without being driven. They just deteriorate on you when you do that. Plus you spent the money on it go out and have some fun with it.

My new car project, Mazda Miata NB2 still below the $50k mark, currently at ($27.8K). Curious what the world record is for a single car project or any single project. Probably those one-off Ferrari's with a minimum order. I think the former and late co-founder of Microsoft (Paul Allen) had a cool project/hobby, recovering American war ships from the ocean. Here in Germany there is no speed limit on the Autobahn. So you should be able to drive 700km across Germany very quickly in a Porsche... WRONG! Traffic does not allow high sustained speeds and the Porsche has to refuel every 400km. With a fast sedan and diesel engine, however, you only need to refuel every 800km. At the end of the day, the Porsche is slower. Remember: It is not the top speed that counts, but the average speed over several days.

Problem is that so few maintain them properly. I drive a Porsche too and I love it but there is no denying it is an expensive car to maintain. But I did my research so I knew that going in. Pretty correct Scotty what you tell us.Two remarks on what You said. When Porsche really considers to stop production of the 911 as they were too expensive to build, they hired a clever CEO at the time. This guy, an Engineer of our best Engineering University RWTH Aachen, hired TOYOTA Production experts to re-engineer 911 production to improve quality & manufacturing costs. Ever since this product was a license to print money for Porsche. Number 2 remark: There is a very interesting Code You can't access with your fancy tool, but Porsche dealers can: Porsche logs overrevs of the engine, and that is why everybody who considers to buy a second hand 911 should take this car to a dealer to get this information prior to purchase - that applies to shifters of course .....

It depreciated this much because it’s quite old and not a desirable generation of 911s. Most 911s hold their values better than any other sports car and they are built well. Some appreciate as they age. It costs money to have this level of fun 🙂

The buyers of these overpriced cars from the 70s and 80s are mostly pensioners who want to fulfill their childhood dream. In 20 years, hardly anyone will want these cars. With poor emissions and horrendous maintenance costs, it no longer makes sense to drive them. Added to this is the hatred of fellow people who do not want to have the air they breathe poisoned.
@functiongarage

@@bernhardtsuballa5341 There is a whole generation of 90's kids that are coming into the market and snatching these up left and right. Everyone said the same thing about the 964 and the 993 but they have all skyrocketed in price. EV programs are being scaled back and shut down across many auto manufacturers. If you really cared about the air being poised you wouldn't be mining Lithium and Dumping Colbat...

People wondered and questioned if it was an air cooled engine why is it not in the front? Where most of the air would be? Only Answer I have to that is too much air would make it too cold and engines. Don’t like being too cold and they don’t like being too hot. So putting it in the rear was a good idea and the added manual activated cooling FAN would suck into the engine bay not blow air out. And there was also an opening above the rear axle to allow the passing air from under the car go into the tube (tunnel-hole) so those really shouldn’t have gone in deep water. The VW rabbit of the same size was actually air tight and seen them go into ponds and drive around like a BoAT! But I don’t think the Bettles were designed to do that. It would be awesome to have a convertible modern car that could float and drove into ponds like the old rabbits of the late 70’s 80’s

How does a $100 fix on a Porsche make it a money pit? Seems like the car has been well maintained. Routine maintenance doesn't make a car a money pit. The first owner spending retail on it doesn't make it a money pit, because that's what it cost when it was new.

I agree. For thirty grand in that condition, yeah, he got a really great deal. But thirty grand is a really expensive toy. But hey if you got it like that then it’s definitely worth it. He could probably sell it for fifty grand rn np. Especially after having a real mechanic look at it and give it the green light. It just goes to show you what kind of deals are out there rn if you have the money to get the good deal in the first place and that’s cuz the economy has gone down the drain and everyone is broke and if they don’t need it rn they are selling it cuz America is going crazy. All the criminals are moving to blue states to get squatters rights and a house for free, live off of the government and welfare and loot stores and sell the stolen goods online cuz they can get away with it without going to jail wether they get caught or not it’s just a ticket if it’s under a grand. And all the law abiding citizens are going to red states to live in peace where there isn’t any crime cuz shop lifting over twenty bucks is a felony, and you can legally live in a ten thousand dollar motor home as your house to save up lots of money and squatters have no rights. But this creates over crowding in the main blue and red states like New York and florida and couple that with the illegals and you got no jobs and inflation to deal with also. This makes it almost impossible to be able to afford to live in any of these main states especially the red ones where ask the law abiding citizens are going. Creating so much traffic also.smh. Something has got to give or break soon and it’s gonna be ugly.

As Chinese manufacturers try to sell as many cars as possible to keep their workers employed, their U.S. competitors are betting on making each vehicle sale more valuable by selling consumers software subscriptions for entertainment, hands-free driving and performance upgrades. The contrasting strategies involve risks for both sides as they approach what some analysts say is an inevitable fight for the U.S. car market. They also underscore what’s at stake with President Biden’s imposition of 100 percent tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles this past week.
