With only two seats and with the ability to carry large loads under the wings he should make some carbon fiber people carrying pods. Can use the excess electrical power for a heat pump to heat or cool the pod interior. They would easily double up as extra cargo carrying capacity for day to day or S&R usage. Bonus points for being able to air-drop cargo like life rafts with supplies or cases of beer for thirsty campers. Integrate the Garmin system to auto release when drop calculator indicates an on target landing.

Looks like there is 25 bolts into rivnuts for each solar panel, plus the front edge tight slot. I'm more than sure this is over engineered, just like the rest of the plane.

Mike, are those solar panels sufficiently stiff that they won't flutter without being laminated to an aluminum or carbon fiber panel?
@ieism13 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I have those on my truck and they have a thick plastic back. I guess if you bend them to wing shape the become even more stiff. I think that's why he went with narrow 50w instead of 100watt panels.

I think Scrappy is absolutely a gift to aviation. But I agree it would be an even bigger boon to "General Aviation," which he loves, for Mr. Patey to focus his prodigious abilities on the minimum useful airplane kit, like you said. No one better than him to zero in on an elegant, ingenious, and maximally cost-effective design. That would grow general aviation. There's always the next big project...

I discovered Mike during the Draco build. On that tragic day when Draco crashed, I posted a comment to the effect that "Mike will be back, better than ever". As we see Scrappy in the home stretch, I am happy to report that I nailed it. (Even a blind pig finds an acorn now and again) Mike is an incredible ambassador to American ingenuity. One of the rare breed of "mad scientist" fabricators, he has created a masterpiece of design in Scrappy. The meticulous care he uses for every bit of Scrappy he creates is simply awe inspiring . Whether it is hanging that ridiculous powerplant on the plane to ghosting in hundreds of names of friends and supporters on Scrappy's skin, he is a textbook example of how to do things "right". Back to work, Mike.
