Love u too Edit: 15:23 I think the reason the crew would think the bag has treasure is because they are morons. They trusted the lotus eaters which made odysseus have to think fast and drug Polyphemus, they wanted to kill Polyphemus when he was their only way out of the cave, they fell for Circe’s whole sexy witch aestethic, and they killed Helios’s sacred cattle. Opening a bag they were expressly told not to isn’t far fetched.

They don’t trust him because of Luck Runs Out. Eury planted seeds of doubt in the crew by questioning their captain and king in front of everyone. Which I understand Eury’s reluctance because he’s also grieving losing seven of their friends but Ody did lead 600 men through ten years of war and none of them died during it. The first time something goes wrong (fatally I’ll admit) and now he’s questioning him. So when Ody brings the bag down, because of Eury doing that publicly and him being the second in command, the crew is like “well damn, if even Eury is questioning him should we trust him?”

Also the fact that they were literally up against a cyclops, a son of poseidon, and not just some random human or army. The reason P-Daddy doesn't find and kill them immediately is that Greek gods are far from all knowing. People keep secrets from them and hide stuff from them all the time in myths. Zeus is playing a game of 'hide the illegitimate baby' with Hera like every other Tuesday. If he DID find them though they wouldn't be safe anywhere, he's the god of earthquakes too.

Ruthlessness is basically Poseidon explaining the main theme of Epic to Odysseus and his crew: “Ruthlessness is mercy upon ourselves.” Basically, if you show mercy to your enemies, then they can get back at you in the future. I don't get why so many people seem genuinely pissed about this. Like, his whole channel's style is listening to a few songs from a work or artist. He rarely breaks this trend. I get wanting HIM to have the best experience reacting to it, but I don't think that mindset breeds this much ire.

@@sunnythekitkat2651Personally, I think its because EPIC: the Musical is something you can't enjoy fully without knowing everything prior. For example, the callbacks to prior songs, the reason why a certain character does something, even just realizing the gravity of a situation. You can't feel the full sadness of the Underworld Saga's callbacks unless you know just how close to home he was, the stupid mistakes he's made, or even just the context of who Polites is.

@@sunnythekitkat2651I mean, it's definitely an overreaction, but considering how many Epic songs end in a middle of a transition to the next song it can be kinda frustrating to listen to them on their own. Nobody likes cliffhangers that never get payback.
@bagszi
@bagszi Ай бұрын
@@sunnythekitkat2651 I think the problem is, that usually musical songs can be standalone experiences, but musicals like Hamilton and Epic are using their songs to tell all the story and it not just 'time stops so this character can sing their inner thougths'. So when you just randomly listen to a few songs without order it's like opening a book and reading a few pages in random chapters. Sure you can tell if it's well written, but it won't make sense if you don't read it in order. Epic also makes much much more sense listening in order and it's a bit annoying to see someone asking so many questions and not getting what's happening and why only just because has not listened the full story in orders. Sure it's their choice, but it's an odd choice and irritating to see. Like when you Mom asking while watching the movie "Who is that? Why he said that" and you are like "Just watch the movie, it will probably will explained!".

First, in "Luck Runs Out" Eurylochus was doing his job by warning Odysseus when he disagreed. The problem is that by doing so in front of everyone else he was undermining Odysseus' authority and making the other men question Odysseus. That is dangerous. What he should have done was find a way to warn him in private. In "Ruthlessness" my reading was that Poseidon WAS being ruthless - but he was being ruthless differently. He was tormenting Odysseus so that when people hear about how much shit Poseidon did to him other people might be more wary of pissing Poseidon off.

9:27 I think, in this animatic, the hair tie Odysseus is wearing was Polites's bandanna/headband that Polites had in most, if not all, of the animatics he's in and the fandom just decided it was his thing. In most of the animatics, they showed Odysseus picking it up when Polites... well, got pancaked. And now, him wearing it has been kind of like a symbol of him remembering his fallen comrades and taking them with him in his journey. It also sort of symbolises him taking Polites's mindset of "greeting the world with open arms" which was how Odysseus acted in this saga and in most of Act 1. Him losing this bandanna in some animatics in one certain future song also signals him letting go of that mindset. So I think what Eurylochus (the second in command) did when he touched Odysseus's hair tie here was remind him while singing "What would we do bif it tears us apart?" was remind Ody how he lost Polites and how it should never happen again so they must not do anything rash. 10:40 The thing is, as much as he does deserve that criticism, we shouldn't forget that he is still the king of Ithaca so criticising and undermining him in front of the crew was not only undermining the captain, but literally their country's king. 20:16 Poseidon was literally like "You should've killed him, then, we wouldn't have any of this" because it is true. Had Odysseus killed him, he wouldn't have been able to pray to Poseidon to get his revenge. Or at least, if Ody didn't reveal his name, Polyphemus wouldn't have known who to get his revenge against, hence, being unable to pray to Poseidon who he wants revenge upon.

Moral is super important when your on a ship with a crew for months (if not years), I’m not saying that Eurylochus shouldn’t question his captain’s decisions, but not IN FRONT OF the entire crew! 3:19 pretty sure you have to prepare the takelage and maybe even take down the sail - its a sailing vessel and a big object catching wind maybe a bad idea if that wind is volatile. Also bring stuff below deck to not loose it, tie stuff down... get below deck yourselves or tie yourselves to something... even nowadays decks are dangerous in storms. One harsh wave or extra strong wind and you have man over board.

Yes but no about Poseidon hating Odysseus, He originally just Disliked him Because He was Rooting for the trojans in the war but they lost, but then Odysseus gave him a reason to thrash him and vent his anger by blinding his son.

9:14 "A Dude that died" was one of Odysseus' childhood friends 10:33 "I took 600 men to war and not one of them died THERE" Nobody died During the war. I think you should re-watch the Thunder Saga when you get back to it so everything connects. I read the 10th book in a series, and after I finished the 9th I assumed I could skip to the 11th because "I would remember what happened what happened in the 10th." Spoiler alert I did not remember the events of the 10th book. 16:30 Humans can go 11 days without sleeping, but will suffer the effects of sleep deprivation throughout. 17:34 Cyclops and Laystragonians are different creatures, but I thought the same at first, too. 18:35 People have probably said this a lot already, but the gods can summon their own background vocals, while humans need other humans for background. 20:35 If Odysseus had killed Polyphemus, Posidon wouldn't be on a revenge trip

Sheesh. "Where was "we should be kind" when he was talking about burning down an entire island and stealing their supplies." Mathew he was literally saying "We're going to do our best to do this peacefully and without fighting. But if THEY kill US you can kill THEM." Which I personally think is quite fair in the context of, y'know, ancient Greece

About the apology Ody never once said sorry or I apologize he just tried to justify his actions A justification and an apology are not the same
@MegamindsMaleWife
@MegamindsMaleWife Ай бұрын
They actually are in greek times, any further regrets or sorry would be further insult by saying he had made a mistake by blinding him. Blinding someone over a mistake is incredibly insulting as a lasp in judgement changed their life. An apology in ancient greek times was about justification for what you did and wishing you didnt have to or had done it differently. Socrates in the original plato apology even says the people who died benefited from his actions as death is a gain. Its giving reasons why not to be punished to get the person mad at you to be understanding of why you did what you did

In Luck Runs Out and in Storm. I'd like to point out that Odysseus is captain. As a captain leading many people, he can't show worry or concern cause that would cause his crew to feel the same. Even if he isn't sure, he has to pretend that he is. When Eurylochus doubts him in front of the crew and Odysseus pulls him aside, he tells him not to undermine him in front of the crew as it would cause the crew to feel as though the captain and first mate aren't on good terms causing worry, he didn't tell him to be quiet and keep his opinion to himself, just to express his concerns about Odysseus' decisions in private.

The one thing almost ALL of the Ruthlessness anamatics got wrong is the lack of the Laestrygonians (the giants) Which Jorge confirmed are the voices saying “POSEIDON, POSEIDON” and are what destroy the ships (not Poseidon)

Okay, ya kinda need to chill about the criticism of Odysseus. Like, his actions make genuine sense if you try to look at thing from his perspective. Trusting the Lotus Eaters made sense because his men were desperate and literally starving. Also, he specifically went for the peaceful option there, rather than just invading like Euryloches wanted to. He has no way of knowing the cave was inhabited and even if it was suspicious, people were starving, and things looking suspicious isn't a good reason to let people continue starving. And they were going to die in the storm unless they were able to find a way out, which launching up to the floating island did. Odysseus isn't stupid. He is constantly being backed into a corner and taking the only options available to him. Euryloches criticizes him but doesn't offer any real solutions, only Odysseus does. Edit: I feel the need to point this out too; Odysseus was in the right to tell Euryloches to stop. Euryloches was not offering another perspective or another idea that they could compromise on. All he was doing was attacking and undermining Odysseus IN FRONT OF EVERYONE. Remember, Odysseus isn't just his captain, he is his KING. If this was any other king and Euryloches tried to call him out, he could probably be executed for it. And Euryloches is directly responsible for offsetting their journey and sending them flying back.

Interestingly, if you're sailing through a storm, it's usually safest to take the waves head on, because if they hit the side of the ship they can capsize it
@aniflowers1998
@aniflowers1998 Ай бұрын
Odysseus decitions wheren't even that bad... Following birds to shore is regular prcedure when lost on sea. With the Lotus eaters, he mostly truted his best friend, who gathered the information from the Lotus Eaters. The damage in the cave was alredy done before odysseus could do aything to stop it, and his plan to fight the Cyclops and the follow up on how to escape him was great. In storm Odysseus ship is alredy the leading ship, becouse it's the captains ship. So instead of faning out a bit, let the other ships DIRECTLY follow his ship, which is alredy kind of carving a track trough the waves. Ancoring the ships on the only solid thing not affected by the storm, a giant flosting island, is a better idea than keeping sailing through it. And asking a god for help after having lost you patron god, while risky, isn't stupid when you are faced with something of possible devine nature, like the storm! The only truly bad decitions he made so far, was telling the ciclops his name, not somehow locking the wind bag away (becouse Eurylichus is not to be truted after effectively starting to turn the crew against his captain), and potentially not directly apologizing to the ciclops. (Oh, and not teaching his man how to fish or shoot freaking birds. A lot of trouble could have been spared, if those dimwits had just figured out how to catch SOMETHING while at sea -.- )
@marveludus
@marveludus Ай бұрын
The entire "righteousness" thing in Ruthlessness in the point though. He's not saying Odysseus revealing his name was cowardly - it was cocky and overconfident. Poseidon is saying that if he truly wants to make it home, he has to commit to his decisions. When he asks him to apologize, Odysseus doesn't, even though it might seem like it. He is still making excuses why he hurt the cyclops, saying he "had to do it" and "took no pleasure in it". NOT standing by his decisions but justifying them. He wants to be forgiven. As you mentioned earlier in the video, Odysseus is convinced he's doing the right thing, partially because he HAS to believe that. Because if this is not all justified in the goal of getting home to his wife and child, what does that make him? He killed an infant.. He sacrificed men in order to keep the rest and himself safe. He is TERRIFIED of himself and the choices he makes, they haunt him, but he forces himself to see them as "righteous" in the greater sense of things. He wants to be forgiven on account of it all being for good. Over time he becomes less hesitant to make "hard choices" because he has convinced themselves they're justified. This disconnect from the consequences of his actions is what causes conflict with both his enemies and allies as they doubt his intentions
