Hello, this is FFD Restorations and today I am going to show you how I made a knife based on recent viewers voting.
About The Knife Build and Giveaway RULES
I posted 5 posts on the community tab asking the audience to vote for their favorite design. This went really well and I want to thank you all for taking part and making it possible to make a knife together.
Results from the previous posts voting are:
POST # 5 • Post
POST # 4 • Post
POST # 3 • Post
POST # 2 • Post
POST # 1 • Post
Thank you for voting in my previous posts!
This giveaway is not sponsored, endorsed or administered by, or associated with KZbin or any other third party. This giveaway is not meant to offend anyone, discourage or bring shame. My intentions are to build a knife that viewers picked parts for and as a reward I will give away that knife to one lucky winner. I truly believe that this giveaway respects the Community Guideline / howyoutubewor. .
GIVEAWAY RULES:
- You must be 18+;
- It is free to enter;
- KZbin is not a sponsor of this contest / giveaway and require viewers to release KZbin from any liability related to this contest / giveaway;
- You have to vote on each post in the comment section and in the comments section of a giveaway video. (this way true fans of FFD Restorations will have opportunity to win the knife, not a viewer who saw only the giveaway video);
- In the giveaway video you can comment only once, reply to other comments as many times as you like, as many comments as you like on posts as well;
- Ending date for voting on the posts is 7 days after posting;
- Ending date to comment on a giveaway video and the winner will be pulled out is 10 days after posting the video;
- The winner will be pulled out from a hat;
- If the pulled name didn't fulfill the rules of this giveaway, it will be disqualified and I will pull out a new name until the winner fulfilled all rules;
- The knife will be shipped in three working days after receiving the winner's address (address needs to be sent to: support@findfixdonate.com);
- In order to send the parcel I need to collect an address and full name of the winner. This data will not be shared with anyone and will be deleted after the parcel is dispatched;
- Worldwide shipping is covered by me, there is no reason to not be a part of this giveaway;
- Worldwide shipping can take from 10-45 days.
The Blade and Build Process
For this knife build I used a Brusletto blade, produced here in Norway. The brand is well known and they make knives from 1892. The length of the blade is 3.5” or 9,5 cm and the weight 1.35 oz or 38 gr.
The blade looks fine as it is but I wanted to get a slightly better look, preferably a mirror finish. So, for that I used a fine wet sandpaper and work my way towards the end on both sides.
As a lubricant and to cool down the blade I used tap water. The blade looks a whole lot better after sanding, so I moved to hand crank grinder and polished the blade.
Many have voted for curly birch wood for the handle and I can see why. The wood is beautiful and more importantly it is resistant to splitting. The length of this piece is 5” or 12,5 cm, 1” thick or 2,5 cm.
I roughly marked the shape of the handle and start with a rasp. I didn't want to rush with this step, so I took my time to get it right.
Usually I stop with 400 grit, but for this occasion I sanded the handle up to 1200 grit. I just wanted to get the best out of this gorgeous piece of wood.
I did two more things to the handle. One of them is adding the brass rings and the second is carving a rope design towards the end of the handle.
First, I started with brass rings. I used a brass plate and cut three square pieces, drilled for the blade tang and got closer in shape for the handle.
The next day I check out the knife. It looked rough, but I will fix that in a moment by filing away excess brass.
I started working on the leather and glued and stitched the pieces together. I also trimmed the edges and smooth them out afterwards. Knife in the sheath feels firm and secure. Locks nicely in place.

This was epic, I am so happy that we did this knife build together. Look at it! it is gorgeous, I couldn't be more pleased . Also I am looking forward to sending this beautiful knife to a lucky winner. 10 days until the actual #giveaway starts from this moment. The End date to enter your comment is: 25. June 2021 5 pm (GMT +1). Lucky winner will be announced in a video the next day! Remember to fulfill the rules of this giveaway. More info in the video description section. I would like to hear feedback on this video experience in general, since I am experimenting with my voice in the video trying to explain what I am doing. For me this is out of my comfort zone and I hope for understanding. All suggestions and critiques are welcome. Thank you!

for the first knife its a very good result, glad the drilling after you had shaped the handle worked out ( I would suggest always keep it square before drilling, and if possible, drill with a drillpress). A few tips to you (as a hobbyist knifemaker myself) for future projects is sand the metal always with a hard backing for your sandpaper, piece of sturdy and flat metal, keeps the lines much more crisp. First totally finish the front end of the handle after drilling, but before glue up. When glueing keep the metal free at the handle, remove the squeeze out glue with some acetone to make it look much nicer without any glue residue. For the sheath, its not really needed but wet molding it to the knife (wrap the knife in climfoil against rusting!) makes it a longer lasting and better fitting sheath. A waterproof finish before glueing up the sheath makes it better for use in the outside. none the less its a good knife and the next owner will be happy with it I think. :)

Everything what you did is great. There are very very much effort, knowledge and skill. I really respect you and your job what you did. Please consider that everyone does not speak English. Your speaking in the video does not have a meaning for many people who watch your videos. Even there is no descriptions your fans will continue watch your videos. You do not need to describe what you do/did, because while watching we can understand and can see what you do. Best regards from Turkey.

Hey Mehmet 😊 Thank you so much for such a lovely feedback. I understand what you mean and apologize that for some viewers this is not the best format for watching. I am monitoring closely analytics for the past three videos and see increased viewers engagement and longer view time. This is important for getting recommended on KZbin by KZbin. I will soon start uploading shorter versions of longer videos without any talking and that could be interesting for viewers who do not speak English. Have a great weekend and thanks again 👍

What a nice man you are. I would like to know more about your clothing. It is something that I’d like to adapt as my style as well.

Thanks David. I was fortunate to find this combination. It took me a while and it was piece by piece. I am still in search of more. You should look for clothing from the 1900's to 1950's online, ads, garage sales and second hand clothing stores. Finding an appropriate outfit can take many trips and months...

Yyyup... mate didn't expect less from you, great job... very deary to first shape the wood peace and then poke the hole for the blade, with big risk to finally be a bit in angle but I bet it is straight for being that it used hand slow dinamic working tools for the whole process. And finally the leather sheath all simple no fancy but very usefull and functional just like knife users likes it. Congratulations great job.

Thanks a lot mate, much appreciated. Many things I did for the first time in this video and I learned a lot. You picked all the details, well done 👍

Yyyup... not at all mate. 🤔 Maybe next time you can ad materials like bone or horn instead of brass, and change the style for a Puukko or a Yakut or two peaces with a pin like Chinese sort... and restructure for a symmetrical kind , and also instead of a long knife maybe a carving small knife or a full tang. 😐 Just not to run out of video topics... 😉... Cheers...

Beautifully done...as always. Just be careful when using the long narrow strips of abrasives...it is so very easy to overwork the piece.

beautyful work...i like the shop its very nice. human powered tools work so well for so many things. i noticed the american nice. a singer sewing machine 50s era electric motor an flange fit perfect to that grinder..use a vacuum belt to connect..use the pedal to control speed...i take the crank off when i use the motor. its nice to use both hands some times.
