the builder crying was obviously because he had stuff going on (mental health, or just general life chaos) but his reaction came across as unprofessional tbh! you as the customer have no responsibility for a builder's emotional state, you had a hole in your ceiling and you mentioned it as you should've! in a professional situation the builder should've been like 'oh shit that's one for monday i'll make a note of it!'

hey phil!! I’m not a contractor but I do bounce around fixing things for a living and I think you were totally valid to bring up the ceiling hole! if it were (somehow) an easy fix, or something could’ve been done to minimize damage/danger before he left, it’s always good to mention it as early as possible. definitely better than not mentioning it and having your whole ceiling cave in, like you said. also, a super important part of having a job like this is being able to shut your work-brain off when you’re not working. it’s hard sometimes, especially if you have to troubleshoot and plan, but so necessary. I’ve broken down in tears on the job (more than once) and been totally fine a couple minutes later, so I don’t think you should worry too much about it :)

Not only do I guarantee the other people don't think about it anymore, but even if someone were to remind them, they'd either have forgotten or don't feel negatively about it! i learned in therapy that it's not your responsibility to say/not say things so you can avoid telling the other person something they don't want to hear. giving people bad news is always really hard, but how they react to it is not something you can control. it's literally the construction worker's job to fix things so it's ok to tell him about something that needs to be fixed. if i saw that hole in my ceiling i'd assume they'd want to know right away in case it's serious. stuff like that can get worse if the right people aren't notified, sometimes even to the point of being unfixable. so many people we interact with in our daily lives are going through something, but we can't possibly let that dictate what we say to them. a grocery store employee is not going to want to hear that a kid threw up in aisle 5, but they'd prefer to know sooner rather than finding out cause someone stepped in it and tracked it throughout the whole store

situations like this are the bane of my existence 😭 one time i inconvenienced a librarian by making her come to the back door with a book and it's so silly but it haunts me....... i agree that the universe is just so rude in these situations
