My tip would be, if you have enough space put in a small test tube nest if you want to use this kind of setup. This way there is not much that can go wrong. When it is not covered they will leave the Test-tube and build their own nest anyway. But if you screw up the hydration they can move back for emergency.
@EnderAnts4 жыл бұрын
ahh yes thats a good idea too, reminds me of a tiny tubs and tubes setup!
@EmpressOfExile206 Жыл бұрын
@@EnderAnts I think hydration is the problem as well! As they are, they will either be under-watered & dry out too fast (no digging) Or you add a sufficient amount of water for them to dig a chamber *but* since there isn't a drainage layer under the soil, the water turns it into a swamp before they can dig deep enough‼️ If you just put a 3/4inch layer of small particle aquarium gravel or lava rock down first and some mesh over the gravel to keep sand out; then you could full moisten the sand/dirt but the extra water would drain down into the rocks and 1. Keep their chamber from getting swampy and 2. The water evaporation would give them a *proper* humidity gradient to choose from! (Moist/humid deep and dryer by surface)

I got one good tip for the future.... *DRILL at least ONE HOLE* into one of the sides and plug it up. Once the colony gets bigger you put on a tube and connect it to whatever... You can either expand it or make them move out this way. Having them move out of those could be tricky if you dont have a huge arena and ramp or something......

AAAAAnother sweet video mate. Those setups are so simple and practical, plus all the components are cheep and easy to obtain even here in Australia. I recently introduced a colony to a natural nest in the same kind of setup, and I wanted to ask, how do you prevent moisture buildup on the sides and lid? Also, how would you introduce a test tube colony to one of these if the test tube is longer than the box? Great video btw!
@EnderAnts3 жыл бұрын
You can drill a hole into the top lid and hot glue mesh from the bottom. That’s what I did with a few of these and they work really well. I haven’t moved any colonies into one of these setups except for one of my Dorymyrmex. The formicarium they were in (Mini Hearth from Tarheelants) was just the right size to fit entirely in a container so I just placed it in. But if the test tube cant fit and they are in dire need of being moved, I’d dump them in. There would have to be a barrier beforehand so they wont escape while the lid is open

Ahh yes that too. For most queen ants I recently catch, I’ve noticed their gaster gets larger before they start laying eggs. I think it was called physogastry or at least on a smaller scale of it. But the one’s with a thinner gaster usually don’t reach a point where it gets larger, and don’t lay eggs.
