In this video I take an old TV stand a client sent back to me, and turn it into a beautiful jewelry box for my girlfriends 30th birthday. I use Wenge wood , which is awful, and white oak to make the hand cut half blind dovetail drawers. I use a router to make all the slides, and I take a hunk of solid brass and use basic woodworking tools to make custom drawer pulls.

Remember kids. Jewelry boxes are for day-to-day jewelry. Put your heirloom or expensive stuff somewhere anyone walking into your bedroom would never bother looking.

11:36 Handy tip I ran across years ago, has saved many a finish for me: Keep an old toothbrush on hand. The bristles are perfect for raking toward any bit of debris in your wet finish, and scooping it right up out of there. Plus the lines they leave are so light, they'll usually flow and fill right in, or with minimal retouching. Give it a wipe with a damp rag (damp with water or whatever the solvent for that finish) to clean the bristles before it hardens, and you can re-use it for every project.

The contrast between the wengé (that's how we write it in the Netherlands) and the oak is so beautiful!! My brother in law made two furniture pieces for his graduation with both oak and wengé. I think I will make some out of wengé and oak or maple or something as well! Keep up the good work!

I think your best project yet. I have made a ton of jewelry boxes like this and like to use shellac as well. If you are using the blonde shellac I think you may find using a rattle can shellac a lot more forgiving and infinitely easier. 4 or 5 light coats, sanding in between and you are done. You can literally apply the next coat in 20 minutes. I can’t believe a client sent that thing back, I’m going to have to look for that podcast, I want to hear that story......Thanks again for sharing this. Dave

Hey john, funny thing is i just picked uo a piece of 4 quarter wenge. 5" wide by 6' long. Cost me $98... i wasnt in the market for any. The piece caught my eye and automatically like 5 ideas popped into my head so i took it. So yeah, you're right saying it's expensive. And that piece you made had alot. I deal with just designers. No clients, and when they mess up its on them so they can watch there commission go bye bye!! Not my problem. You kinda have to be like that though. Especially in new york. Someone has to pay for my time and materials. I don't eat any of that unless it's from my own doing. Which has happened a time or two....lol great job on the box & congratulations with your lady.
