I make an Industrial Design Style Coat Hanger using Steel Rebar Rod - MIG Welder Project

In this video, I make an Industrial Design style Coat Hanger using Steel Rebar Rod to give it a real rustic industrial decor look. I love the look of industrial furniture and all the decor that comes with it, and this rustic coat hanger has the look I like. It was a good little welding project for me, I did not heat the rebar steel for bending I just used bits of pipe that slid over the rebar to get the leverage for the bend.
The Rebar is a 7mm steel rebar rod

Note: When you bend metal/rebar, you naturally weaken it. Bending it cold will normally cause fine cracks, and it may even break if you put enough strain on the rebar or bend it in the same place too many times. Do not rely on cold-bent steel/rebar to support a load.

Loved it.I once made a few like it but I made the loop at an angle sticking out so I could put them together one hanging from another..unfortunately I gave them to an old mate but he doesn’t have them anymore so I have no photos. If in the future I decide to make them again I’ll send you a picture(probably no where near as good as yours)you are a genius sir.🙏

Yes, I can understand why you say that, as it is a coat hanger. I made this to fit right in with other industrial style things, that I make all with the raw industrial steel rebar or other steel and timber with a clear coating or sometimes black coating. Thank you for your comment.

Thank you very much. My MIG welder is a "Unimig Viper182" 240volt and I am using shield gas. Your best bet would be to ask someone over there which would be good for you, but either way, if you search "Best entry-level mig welder" on youtube you will get a good choice from people that have on hand many MIGs to play with and would know much more than me. Hope that helps a bit.

All my finished products are coated, some with clear like the lettering at the back of my workbench and some with black because as they are steel they would rust if left unprotected.

What are the reasons for removing the scale before working on the rods?

At the end of the project, I clean it all up ready to coat with a finish because it is bent sometimes it is hard to get to some parts, by cleaning it before bending those parts are cleaned and at the end, it all just needs a light clean-up.

I used Penetrol Rust Treatment Penetrates Rust 300g Aerosol Spray, and then put two topcoats of Semi-Gloss Clear Coat. That is what I used on the rebar lettering on the back of my workbench, here is the link to that video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gHKQqJ5sZ7-ans0 I try not to comment on finishes, As what climate you are in, is it inside-outside, lots of rain, ice, do you want long term and rarely touch, or a wax with a wipe over every year. That is why I have no opinion, Please ask someone in your area what you should use, I feel this is a better way to find out. Thank you for your comment.
