I am disturbed by the comments who think the whole grading system is about "arbitrary numbers." A grade must reflect a student's learning, and must be a predictor whether that student can succeed at subsequent levels. Even if a student "makes all effort" but fails to deliver on learning criteria, that does not mean we should pass him/her. That student would then just go on to struggle at the next level, and be a burden to their next class. It's a disservice to that student and to the future classes. A "C" at the college level, no matter what number it is derived from, must reflect that the student is ready for the next level, but will have to put in additional effort to keep up with that next level. At the college level an "A" should reflect exceptional learning, demonstrating effort beyond what is expected. Passing a "D" student as a "C" student will force that student into likely frustrating failure at the next level. It would be unfair to that student him/herself.

That may be true... But I see the economics classes in several universities that pin a C at 35%. So........

Larry Query I thought a D is passing unless it's a major course.

Unless schools do pluses or minuses, then an A is 94-100 and an A- is 90-93. I did have a professor that required a 94 for an A.

A score of 32/100 on the final and you still get a D? That's generous.

Also, considering that he only showed up half the time, most instructors can fail you just on attendance alone if it is in their syllabus. He could have very easily failed automatically or withdrawn from the course just for that.

I had a situation where I had to ask my teacher for a C. The grades were weighted and I missed 1 exam which brought my grade down to a D (66). I only missed one quiz aside from that, but I completed almost everything else with an 80 or higher. However, at least two of my assignments recieved a low grade; C (70) on a quiz and F (50) on a discussion. I didn't have a valid reason for missing the exam either, just that I didn't know that one was due that particular date, so I couldn't make it up. Although I had an idea about weighted grades, I didn't know just how badly your grade could be ruined by missing an exam. If I had known, then I definitely would have done my part to get extra credit. I explained all of this to my teacher, although I felt bad for it because I know teachers can't just give you a pass on things that don't have valid reasoning. If I knew for a fact that I never did my work and I never came to class, then I would take responsibility and just have to fail then pay for the class. But, luckily my grades did represent that I put in effort and I never missed a class/participated in class activities.

A 61% is an F in America last time I checked.

You have a 4% margin of getting a D between F and C. A C is 6% margin between C and a B. Just to make sure what is the state/providence of the schoool in which you attend to. Not your house location.
@ThePinkLady99112 жыл бұрын
I only hate is because it's slightly easier to get a D than a C. A's are 90-100 and B's are 89-80, so they're just fine.

61% seems high for a d... in the uk on a higher gcse paper 61% would be a b
@RustedCrown1110 жыл бұрын
collages in the USA use a 10 point scale, where 90s are an A, 80s is a B, 70s is a C and 60s is a D, anything bellow is 60 is an F but in the public education system, the grading system is a bit different so 69 and bellow is an F

Matthew Lunn is this a joke?
@adaai23849 жыл бұрын
+Jacie Kelley Nope. In UK Universities, generally, 40+% is a pass (a D, or "Third"), 50%+ is around a C, 60%+ is a B, and 70%+ is an A (which we call a "First.")

+Matthew Lunn +Jacie Kelley I'd imagine that they grade more honestly in the UK: a 61% is a real 61% but is still considered good work so is a B, but in US everyone is considered a star so they get a higher point grade as well thru curving, lenient grading on papers, to make them get the same letter grade on a higher scale
