PRO-TIP (after 2 years of only wearing barefoot shoes): Flat barefoot shoes like Geo Racers are ideal for grass, dirt and indoor environments like gyms. For hard and flat surfaces like concrete, asphalt and sidewalk tiles, it's actually better to get a "trail" barefoot shoe that have thicker rubber lugs on the bottom. Those are intended to give you grip when walking or running in trail environments, but the stiff rubber lugs actually provide some cushion which is ideal to protect your feet from unnaturally hard and even surface like roads and sidewalks
@bdurushia Жыл бұрын
I agree. It was a little nicer running on pavement in my vivo Magna Trail FG's than a primus lite's at first. However, I've worked a lot on my form/technique and now the concrete doesn't bother me when running in the primus lites (same sole as said georacers.) What gives? The hard ground or one's soft body? It's the body. It takes time but it's okay to learn to run on pavement in the thinner shoes, too. Although more natural surfaces will always be better cause it provides a huge variety of loads to the muscles, joints, and ligaments in the feet. Feedback our body loves.

Would you say running on a treadmill is similar to hard surfaces with no absorption force ?
@k.constantine Жыл бұрын
@@lightzpy8049 No. At my gym, I use a treadmill for conditioning also with lots of incline running, and there I wear the Primus Lites (slimest Vivobarefoot sole). Those machines are easier on the foot than concrete in most cases. Still worse than natural surfaces but not as bad as roads. Mind you, this is only really a problem if you're running every day or for very long distances. I've done 5k and 10k in the unpadded shoes before and it only started being a problem when I did it more often or for longer. Another thing to consider is that road surfaces like concrete or asphalt are pretty rough on the rubber, so an exceedingly thin sole will get worn through much faster than a trail sole, which is why I use trail shoes for the road and the thin-soled ones for the gym.

Would the trail also be good for a very overweight newbie that want to walk/jog eventually in the yard?
@k.constantine Жыл бұрын
@@mauriglisson6954 Yup! It's intended for natural (trail) surfaces anyway, I just find that it also does quite well on concrete. @@yomomshouse100 that’s the problem though. The human body adapts to wearing cushioned shoes, so it starts to use the wrong muscles and even run/sprint less efficiently. Heal strikers are the example of this, largely caused by wearing healed shoes, or deeply cushioned shoes. I’ve been wearing barefoot style shoes for 2 years now and it’s insane. I don’t get joint pain anymore whereas before with cushioned shoes, my knees and hips would be destroyed for two days after a 5km run. Barefoot shoes force you to run on the balls of your feet, use you calves rather than hamstrings and glutes. I’m really seeing the benefits now getting back into sprints. I’m faster than I’ve ever been. You are right in saying just go with whatever suits you though 👌 I wouldn’t force the idea of barefoot on anyone, but also no point in knocking the idea Edit addition: Barefoot isn’t really an “idea,” more so just going back to basics/natural. No matter the shoes you wear if the arch of your foot is flattened, your bone structure starting from your ankles is not aligned anymore and you lose your natural shock's damping. Potentially causing pain in knees, hips or lower back. To test your feet/reinforce your arch, you can do the following exercice: Stand on one foot, straight leg, and with the other foot in the air, also straight leg, trace half a circle starting from behind you to the front. Reset the position by going in a straight line with your leg. It's important to NOT go from front to back in an half a circle trajectory because this will flatten the standing foot. Always do it from back to front. You should be able to do 20 of these without losing balance. To do this as an exercise, you can increase the movement speed, put weight on the moving ankle, do the exercise on an unstable surface or a combination of these.

I think the back problems may stem from the fact that you actually have to learn how to walk/run/jog barefoot. Years of heel striking with straight legs has been trained from watching others and the types of shoes. I used to be a distance runner when young and would do it barefoot on the grass oval tracks. But once I started wearing running shoes, succumbed to knee tendonitis injuries. I have discovered barefoot running and have found that after some initial training, the knee injuries are non-existent. @pigmie When you’re gait changes from heel striking to the more efficient ball of foot push your posterior muscles are stretched a lot more. The calves, hamstrings and glutes are a lot more active. If you had a previous posterior injury/weakness/imbalance you lower back will start to hurt because the psoas is also trying to stretch against those muscles. The spoas connects to the back. There’s a lot more to this but that’s the simplified version

@@dillogdall1 it is more effective because you are not losing any momentum in you leg/hip/foot stroke when you don’t heel strike. The heel is part of a breaking mechanism in the human body. Must admit, the geo racers aren't designed for trail running... Slipping is to be expected😅 They are really more of a weight training/short run/casual trainer. For your purposes, the Primus Trail would be better... Also, I would warn anyone else away from just jumping right into barefoot running. You need to transition slowly for several weeks/months, it might have contributed to the back issue. Otherwise I have personally found far less injuries since transitioning, but I also realise its not for everyone. So give it a try if you aren't happy with your current shoes, getting injured for no reason, or feel like changing things up. If your happy and running fine, then stick to the usual. To note, mine last for about 1000-1300km of running on asphalt, which is fantastic, so well worth the investment in my opinion.

That was a big mistake as I have had achy/sore feet pretty much all day everyday for the last 5-6 months straight. It’s slowly getting better and slightly starting to ease up. Use me as an example. I highly recommend the SLOW part of the transition. 1-2 hours a day for probably the first 3 months, then maybe 4 hours a day for the next 3 months and/or until you feel good in them most days.

Love your videos please do a video on using muscle activation techniques. Using the MAT and see how old injuries change and see how much more power you get. Pro tip try the nxpro RXMAT, core strength will increase alot solving any back issues and increasing flexibility

Your ankles doesn’t collapse inwards as much if you look at the before and after photo. It’s minimal but you only used them for 30 days. Also you do have a larger arches under your feet, also minimal but noticeable. Continue to use them for at least a year and do a comparison then.

Running heel first on a hard surface drives the impact through the leg, at the back. Running on the ball of the foot has more springiness that absorbes the shock from impact.
@jonathaneby1440 Жыл бұрын
Running on hard surfaces, (with barefoot shoes or straight barefoot) takes a lot of time. You can do it, but don’t rush it.

Thanks, this explains why I got back pain, just from rucking to my local nature reserve (5 mins) on pavement. Also, up and down hills caused minor foot pain (extensor tendonitis).

Unexplained back pain, especially in a very athletic person, is often stress related. (Emotional stress.) The book Healing Back Pain explains this in a way that changed my life.

ive been wearing my vivo barefoots for a couple days at a time to get used to them , my feet do hurt and cramp afterwards , i also play basketball in them for a couple hours , just to get used to them , my feet do hurt at night after a while of wearing them but my feet do really feel better. My heels are pretty sore afterward , my back however feels great i normally had a sore lower back but its much better in the morning , and my plantar fasciatis has gone as well. I just turned 40 and have had my feet squishes all my life by tight toe boxes I would recommend these for people who want strong feet

I have only been wearing barefoot sandals for the past week and a half and I’ve already noticed huge differences in the way I stand and my scoliosis. Barefoot shoes are definitely the way to go when you frequently go places where you cannot be barefoot.
@MultiParallelGirl9 ай бұрын
Your scoliosis improved? I have scoliosis as well which can get very painful at work. Not only in the back but in the hips and knees sometimes. I didn’t have a lot of hope for barefoot shoes to help with my scoliosis, but I really hope that it does help. I haven’t gotten my barefoot shoes yet though I just ordered them yesterday.

I would encourage you to try it, ease into it slowly though. I really ended up in a lot of pain pain in my feet because I went much too fast and wore them every single day. I am now 10 months in and yes there has been improvement in my spine. I’m still having a little bit of trouble with my neck, but that’s nothing that my chiropractor can’t help me with. It really does make a difference! It a cure, just a difference.

Definitely need more time to see the benefits. I've been wearing these type of shoes for about 4 years now. At first I needed time to adjust but after about a year I was comfortable wearing them everywhere. Oh I also have high arches now because of it 😂

I agree with you, I have been wearing my merral barefoot shoes for 1 year and a half now and first 2 weeks pain and now I can not live without them. I am going crazy trying to find a pair of barefoot cycling clips shoes but non are there. All cyclying shoes are stiff and not comfortable.

I thought my feet were looking like Fred Flintstone feet because I’ve gained weight and am a senior citizen but now know it’s because I haven’t worn regular shoes for 4-5 years. I’m barefoot or wear slippers or Birkenstock knockoffs. I recently discovered minimalist shoes and from the first time I put them on they are the most comfortable I’ve ever worn!

Bro your before and after on the back you can SEE how your ankles where tilted to the outside (overpronation, which causes flat feet, no arch) before and how after they were more aligned and that’s why the arch looks better!!!!

I got a pair of vibrams bare foot shoes about 7 years ago. Haven't turned back once, I walk around 6 miles a day cross country, woodlands etc. No transition was needed, just switched, and off I went . The way I walked improved, my lower back pain disappeared. Running became much better, 5k 3 times a week on concrete, no problems, I started to run properly.
@KelliRivers Жыл бұрын
Have you always walked on forefoot?
@420_24seven Жыл бұрын
@Kelli Rivers no I always had bad posture and walked heel first, I have collapsed arches in my feet, knock knee and pelvic tilt. Not anymore though , much of which I can attribute to barefoot shoes. Running is much better when not heel first to the ground .

I exclusively wear barefoot shoes now. My first pair was also from Vivobarefoot. I got the Primus Knit. Very comfortable, but the quality is questionable - especially considering the higher pricetag compared to other barefoot shoe brands. My second pair of barefoot shoes, and what I'm currently wearing, are actually from Xero Shoes. I have the Kelso in white. Highly recommended over Vivobarefoot. My only regret is not going barefoot sooner.

Barefoot shoes are great, really helped with my back/knees, can't really go back to "normal shoes". But I do think you should have conducted the experiment much longer, at least half a year. Personally I wouldn't advice with going straight to Vivobarefoot either, a good middle ground are something like "Lems shoes" which have more cushioning. But otherwise a great video.

if you're worried about the price, I got my barefoot shoes that look, work and feel just like the ones he had for $20 on Temu, so if you wanna try them out, you can find good quality cheap ones. PS. I absolutely love my barefoot shoes and I ware them EVERYWHERE. Also I noticed that they help with the growth of the tendons around the foot, especially the achilles tendon at the back. I would recommend them to anyone who wants to get stronger and more resilient feet and legs, and doesn't mind a bit of aching at the start. Now I only feel discomfort after about 4 hours of continuous walking. (I've had them for about 2 months)

There are shoes with slightly ticker soles too that get you the same toe freedom (letting your foot work as it should) but work better for harder surfaces or for beginners, you should try it out! Examples: Lems primal Zen, Xeroshoes HFS 2, Joe Nimble Addict Road

There are barefoot shoes with some padding. I would suggest them because it makes the transition so much better.
@NothingHereForYou Жыл бұрын
My doctor told me to add extra padding in my left shoe. Apparently my left leg is shorter slightly and it had my hips out of alignment causing lower back pain. Also running barefoot causes a sharp firey pain in the arch of my foot. I don’t know I wanted to try these but it seems a bad idea for me
@antomat85 Жыл бұрын
Watch out, your shorter leg could just be a complex problem of muscle stiffness over the years, which make it look like u have a shorter leg. Also, if u have this problem u should not absolutely run barefoot, but just walk barefoot
@NothingHereForYou Жыл бұрын
I stopped with the sole and just make sure to watch my posture. Also sleeping on my side caused back pain so Im back to sleeping on my back. After talking to a foot doctor it seems I need extra arch support because I lean inwards. Arch support seems to help the time of foot I have. Now I just need wide toe box shoes with arch support so I can walk at work all day.@@antomat85

You could just wear properly sized flat soled shoes like wrestling shoes, hightops, moccasins, or deck shoes. That's all I used to wear, but most companies don't make them in wide sizes (and making custom fit moccasins is a pain in the ass), so I had to switch to work boots. I hate wearing anything with a heel.
@zdenekdolezal9646 Жыл бұрын
You have a lot straighter ankles if you see them from begind. You had them tilted a lot. And little bit stronger arch.
@LosDoyerss Жыл бұрын
After time these shoes will do damage to your joints, specifically ankles, knees and back. Since you don't have as much cushion and support that regular shoes provide. When walking and running a shock is sent through the lower part of the body with every step you take. The most damage will happen on hard surfaces like rock, concrete and tile.

I think people have said that you’re supposed to get used to walking in them and to avoid running or sprinting in these shoes for a while. I could be wrong about that, but if someone has just started wearing barefoot shoes, it takes time for the body to get used to them.

The problem is once you've experienced natural foot flexion and toe splay and proper walking and running, there's no going back if you want to protect your foot and back health over the long run. Keep wearing the old ones and look forward to the joy of bunions, knee and hip trouble, and back problems when you get older. Watch Northwest Foot and Health videos and you'll learn a lot. Dr. Ray MaClanahan has been largely responsible for dramatically changing runner's health and the field of podiatry through a natural approach to foot health. Btw, I have Freet Feldoms and they have extra tread for trail running. Love them. And they're great for wider feet than Vivos. Do some research. There's lots of info on the barefoot minimalist shoe movement and foot health out there and many barefoot shoe brands. Btw, you have great toe spread. Your feet haven't yet been ruined by conventional pointed toe shoes. But, you have the beginnings of what looks to be a tailors bunion on your little toe. That's from wearing tight shoes. You might try Correct Toes toe spreaders when you wear shoes for a while. They'll help correct that over time. And make sure that you wear shoes with a natural wide toe box. It takes time to adapt to minimalist shoes, but once you do, regular shoes feel cramped, weirdly forward leaning, and mushy. But, it's important to transition gradually and do mobility exercises to strengthen your feet so that they can work the way they're supposed to. It's especially important if you're running since regular shoes cause an unnatural jarring heel strike rather than distributing the force of landing through the natural spring in the arch and forefoot. Your feet have atrophied in places and your Achilles tendon shortened due to wearing inflexible shoes with the toes immobilized and your heel lifted. You might have also developed postural alignment problems which led to your back injuries because of that. It takes time to regain natural foot strength and form. Here's a video on transitioning to barefoot shoes. Every part of our body depends on our proper foot function and alignment. Here is a great summary intro to foot health and shoes: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gZywdWp6l6uUf8k I've also found that the Grown and Healthy channel gives fantastic advice on alignment, mobility training, and barefoot running.

whether it be the knee and hips with a higher drop shoe or the lower leg, foot and ankle with zero drops shoes, the stress has to go somewhere
@johnatyoutube Жыл бұрын
@@steve9377 Yes, exactly. So things need to be properly lined up and working optimally. What I've learned is that conventional shoes preclude that. The shift to barefoot shoes and mobility focused lifestyle has made a huge difference for me.

Tennis shoes are meant for running, so it makes sense that you have more soreness and injury. I think wearing padded shoes for running and wearing the barefoot any other time is best. For example, l was more achy after running a lot in minimally padded cleats than my running shoes

Walking and running barefoot is alright on concrete or harder surfaces, it just takes stronger tendons and muscles to absorb the extra load, it’s actually really good to learn good form
