The edible image alone probably cost $10-$20. I'm surprised they just slapped the whole thing on. If I was running short on time, cutting out the logo from the edible image and sticking them to an already fondant covered cake would've looked much better than one big sheet of printed image. Also, the sheer size of the 1 star cake can feed much more than 10 people.

It looks nice and it gives me the impression that the bakery put in effort to make the cake look extra beautiful for the birthday kid. I also like how their crayon colors match with each other. The 1 star bakery cake looks quite nice on the inside. I wonder if their decorator is overworked or something which is why the outer appearance isn't as good as the inside?

The 1-star bakery might have charged the absurd price because they didn't want to make the cake. I've been a freelance web designer for 11 years and when someone asks me to do a project I don't want to do, I will quote a crazy high price. Occasionally, they actually take me up on it, so I'm like, "Ok, if you pay me that much, I'll do your demon hell project!" Edited to add on 10/6/20: LOL! It's been fun reading all the reasons people thought I might not want to take a job. For clarification, it's only been for difficult jobs, ones that aren't "this will be a fun puzzle to solve!" difficult, but "I would rather peel my fingernails off than do this" difficult. If a job is harder, it should cost more, so I don't see anything unethical about that. If I can just say no, I prefer to do that, but in some cases that would be rude or cause some sort of fallout. I've also only done this maybe...four times? So, I assure you, I'm not grifting my way through life, thanks :) And I always create quality work, nothing like that 1-star bakery cake which really should have looked better for what it cost!
@joycegallowayparker96524 жыл бұрын
I truly mean no offense by this,, but as a cake decorator for 40+ years, if I didn't want to do a project (in my case, a cake), I would just be honest and tell them no. To just jack up the price because it's one you don't want to do seems . . . well, not really ethical. But if it's one that would require a lot more time, work and skill, then it would be perfectly acceptable to up the price.
@cazb99814 жыл бұрын
@@joycegallowayparker9652 You'd be surprised how many people do increase the prices when it's things they don't want to do/don't have the time to do. My father in law owned his own business as a builder, gained a fantastic reputation but ended up having too much work and his health was suffering. Rather than turning work away, he quoted a massively high price. As a business owner with a really good reputation, he always said it's better business sense to crank the price up than to turn away work. If they are still happy to pay, then at least you are being fully compensated for killing yourself to get the project done! That being said, that 1 star bakery doesn't have a great reputation and so does not justify the high price tag. As a hobby cake decorator myself, the ONLY reason I can see why they charged that much is because of the amount of hours that would have to go into making the cake. Many a time I have spent so much time and money making/decorating a cake and never make any real money out of it because if I did, I would have to charge a hell of a lot more money for the cake and nobody would ask me to make them as I am only a hobby baker, it is not a business (regardless of how effective the cakes look at the end of it). Never would I ever hand over a cake that looked that terrible though. If someone paid me that much for that cake, I would be getting the ruler out and making sure it was a fully scaled up replica!

@@joycegallowayparker9652 I don't see how it's unethical, there are other cake shops that they can get quotes from and they're allowed to take their business there is they so wish. It's really not that umcommon of a practice in many fields. For instance, I've known a mechanic who told me that he always quotes a higher price for specific makes/models of cars (specifically Subarus and Mercedes) because they're a bigger pain to work on. I don't see that as unethical, it takes more time, knowledge, and effort to complete the project. It's also a common practice is freelance programming and web design too as the OP mentioned. As with anything that doesn't come off of an assembly line, it's all subject to human emotion.

Honestly, thats kind of funny. Theoretically of course.

@@shelbyb9965 It is unethical if someone deliberately jacks their price up to a crazy amount just because they don't want to do the job. And if you go back and read my last sentence, you will see where I even said "if it's one that would require a lot more time, work and skill, then it would be perfectly acceptable to up the price." But when I wrote that, I thought people who read it would realize I meant mechanics, carpenters, web designers, cake decorators - people in all fields of work. But if you consider being fair and honest as "human emotion", then so be it.

I worked in a supermarket "Bakery Department" whilst I was at university and a lot of customers would want a "high end" decoration for a supermarket price. I am now a high school teacher and one of my teaching subjects is Food Technology. At the moment, my students are learning basic cake decorating and last week they learned levelling a cake, crumb coat, applying buttercream, a drip with ganache and then some buttercream swirls. All of them said "This is not as easy as I thought it would be" and "It takes so long". I told them that now they know why decorated cakes cost so much. Both my mother and sister were cake decorators (mostly fondant decorated wedding cakes) so I know how long cakes take to do and most people don't appreciate the time involved.
@asideofaioli46304 жыл бұрын
@@christinebarrett9217 I can understand why cake decorating costs money. I don't understand why it gets marked up as soon as it's labeled as a wedding cake though. The same care should be taken into a product someone sells regardless of the event. And wedding cakes aren't necessarily more ornate or detailed than non-wedding cakes, it just depends on what the customer wants. So out of curiosity, do you know why there's immediately an upcharge on wedding cakes, independent of their design?

I have chaired a high end dessert auction committee - I guarantee that your cake would have been auctioned off at a minimum $500 - $700 and in this area most people would be willing to pay up to $250 - $350 for such a beautifully crafted cake. The others? This is what I would expect from a somewhat skilled home baker.

@@TheIcingArtist So I'm in Canada and this was for a very big choir organization fund raiser. We used to hold it every year at out world class performing arts facility (where the symphony performs) in the rotunda area. In between performances we would auction off high end baked good - cakes like yours done by professionals and home bakers (some of them were at your level). At the beginning of the evening we display everything - then guests pick their top 3 desserts - we then would cull down to about 10 for live auction by a professional auctioneer. And the prices were anywhere for $300 - $800 each over the years. Once you win we provide you with serve ware for your table to enjoy your dessert or packaging to take it home. Remaining desserts (non-live auction) are put into our silent auction and we close them off at various points in the evening so everyone can enjoy a treat. We also auctioned off things like hockey tickets, travel packages, wine etc. We also have a cash wine bar, complimentary crackers, cheese, fruit, and non alcoholic beverages and door prizes too! The last one we did was for our 2oth anniversary, our profit - over $12000.00 and the majority was from dessert sales. Hope that helps!

June Austin that’s exactly what I told my partner: the two “professional” cakes looked like homemade amateurs! The $200 especially looked like a beginner baker who did it for free for a friend’s kids party or something...and if that had been the case then it would have been a great effort. But from a PRO who charged at all, esp $200?!? No ma’am. I’m not taking that cake. That’s an embarrassment!

For a bakery that doesn't specialise in cakes like that it's pretty good, and I kinda thought the paper towel print made it cute. The difference between at home bakers and a bakery is usually how much time you can spend on making a cake, but of course that also means they should know their own limitations and not take on a job they know they can't do well enough. That's something I had to learn over the years I've made cakes.

I liked the one with the paper towel texture. It looked more homemade than the other one and you said it was too sweet. I love 💕 sweet cakes and I know kids do too. The only criticism I have is that it looked kind of messy when you cut it. The other one was too boxy. They put on the printed edible paper but it looked so bad cuz they did blend it in with the fondant or whatever was already on the cake. It looked like you could just pull the edible paper off. And the price was ridiculous. I guess you get what you pay for! 🎂 Thank you for your review. I also like that you seem so genuine and that’s refreshing to me.
