I tried out a dual fishing & farming base on a river for force wipe which started with a 2x2 area, with 2 traps & a fishing spot. I found the traps unviable to be used with high tier bait as I have easily a 95% catch rate fishing. I mainly put pumpkins, corn & human meat in the traps to catch bait fish & would use all grubs & worms on the line. Any yellow perch I caught on the line were instantly put on that rod because there is a mechanic that you will never catch the same fish as you last caught so I was guaranteed of a salmon or a catfish. Another thing to be noted is that, even though pig, chicken, deer & horse meat are level 5 bait rating, they can still hook a low tier fish where wolf & bear meat will always catch a high tier fish. Once I expanded the 2nd floor for my farm I was using the low tier fish un-gutted in my composter until I could make a stable for dung. Bones decay very slowly but at least you're getting something for them. I was making 1500+ scrap per hour from the fishing & it was very easy getting animal bait when they were moving through the river. I also found that the traps kept getting in the road when I was trying to upgrade & anything building related & I had to destroy many which would be a massive hinderance if you were trying to defend a raid. I didn't feel I was catching anything every minute so maybe that was because of using the vegetables. Next time I may try the same base & I can fit 7 traps & use raw fish instead & I'll see how that goes.

Its most profitable to use fish traps in swamps or rivers as you can also catch catfish and yellow perch which on average generates more scrap than ocean

@@ShiroIsMyName because I only caught 3 trout. I did get a bunch of low grade from cutting up the small fish. That's nice but I NEED scrap.

@@scottcrow I used grubs at first, then tried boar meat, and then fish meat from the traps. I caught like three trout. Tried to use the trout as bait caught nothing. I suck and I give up.

@@Thr0mamay yeah you're using the wrong baits, grubs are only good in stacks of 3 and fish meat will only give small fish or trash. Instead you should go for animal meats, mainly bear or wolf meat. Alternatively you can make a berry farm and use the berries as bait. I have a berry farm set up right now that makes me about 6000 scrap an hour by using the berries as fish trap bait.

I tried this on staging as well as after official release. 12 planters will get you 6 grubs and about 27 worms. That's barely enough for one fish trap. I tried growing potatoes for bait, but that caught mostly trash and a few small fish. Gutting fish and using it as bait gave about the same result. Using all small fish as well as trout as bait got me some salmon, but it didn't get enough to make much scrap. I had to continuously hunt animals to make any sort of real profit from this. The other thing to consider is that fish traps can only be placed in a narrow strip on the shoreline and not close enough together to have many in the bottom floor of a farm base.

@@rasplay5761 one stack of berries is 20 berries. so you can put 5 stacks (100 berries) in the survival fish trap if you want. or you can put in one stack (20) berries. or you can put in just 5 berries. and yes you have to reset the trap as the video says every 48s-72s and you have to stay in close proximity to it

2 Grub Bait is enough to catch Shark Salmon or Trout.

yea thats on my list to test and see if there is a difference in 3 grubs vs. 2 grubs, my guess is it doesnt influence the drop rates

@@sigbog I tested it with fishing rod and it works, so I guess it’s the same for the trap. You can get like 250 scrap in 5 minutes if you fish with 2 at a time, that’s insane :)

The fish trap / hemp base should also have an automated L1 workbench running animal fat + cloth => low grade. To get even fancier add an L2 automated to do cloth + low grade + metal frags => meds and sell the meds in a shop to players for 8 - 10 scrap a go.

it takes maybe 1-2 minutes to check the 14 traps I had in the base. 14 bait is a lot to go through actually, and youre talking 70-140 scrap worth in most cases. if youre loading it up entirely with a giant berry operation, it would be a lot of constant work for sure, but then again itd be a ton of scrap. what was actually happening is I would check the traps in-between trips to monuments/roams/farming, or at night. only really fiddle with them if I didnt feel like really playing the game and just wanted to listen to music and chill

@@sigbog so if you made 6190 scrap (from the video) and you made 70-140 scrap each time (105 on average), then you checked your traps 59 times over several days? that math doesn't seem correct. if you had enough bait, couldn't you check your traps 59 tiems in like two hours? doesn't that mean that you can make 6190 scrap in two hours if you have enough bait and check your fish traps constantly 59 times in a row?

yea Im hoping to do a base next but probably need to run mine through another wipe. The main thing you need to worry about is that they're picky about their depth. To place them on a building block it needs to be just slightly underwater. And you cant place other deployables in water except vending machines, so that makes base designs awkward because the 1st floor needs to be a tad underwater and thus cant really be used for anything else. Otherwise, put the bait in, pull the fish out in a few minutes or whenever you feel like it, ezpz.

I think console is still on the older version of fishing :( which means fish traps will be kinda worthless. unless theyre on the even older version of fish traps, which were super useful. I dont remember the strat exactly you might need to look up some older youtube videos, something about blocking fish trap slots with bones and force catching trout. but on PC when fishing with rods was introduced it wrecked fish traps until this more recent update, I suspect thats where console is

3 e furnaces need 1 splitter, which needs 1 e branch. You only need one conveyor to push/pull loot to/from a box. Done

every time a trap catches a fish it needs to be reset to work again, so thats your time to take out anything you don't want to be used. (EX: leave trout, take out salmon/small fish)

I been keeping this a secret because I don't want to get it patched but as long as you only mention this for the fishing quest I don't mind you sharing it. Most quests you can redo over and over. For example what I sometimes do in the beginning of a wipe if I can't find a bear right away is redo the fishing pole quest over n over to stack up on grubs, or when I run out of grubs. The trick is once you do the quest and claim the reward you then respawn. If you place a bag right outside of fishing village you can run straight back and do the quest again. It's pretty easy way to stack up on over 1k scrap pretty quickly depending on how good you are at fishing. Plus you only need two grubs for shark salmon or trout. This also works on most quests. You can stack up on pumps, or if you see a bunch of pigs near ranch you can 100 scrap for each one you kill. One of my favorite ways to use this is on force wipe with the treasure mission. If you have a horse you can get to the treasure pretty quickly, and eventually you will get yourself a T2 weapon to research. Even if you don't you will stack up on valuable comps/BPs to make it worthwhile until you do. Since force I been mixing it up to find the best way to take advantage of this and I've found fishing is usually the best for me since I never snap the line.
