I'm sure SC3 had great single player content, but as a fighting game it was irredeemably broken and single handedly nearly killed Soul Calibur in the fighting game community. Combine that with the fact that it was PS2 exclusive, effectively alienating 2/3 if the huge fan base that SC2 had garnered and ensuring all the forward momentum into the mainstream was rapidly killed, and I think it's safe to say SC3 is the worst game of the series in terms of the massive negative effect it had on the franchise's overall health.

11:03 ''...and that's about it for modes.'' - said about the SoulCalibur game with the biggest number of modes. Tales of Souls being a ''straightforward story mode''? Yeah, no. You can actually take your characters through several different routes, and the story and the enemies you encounter are different for any fighter. You might meet bonus characters (Revenant) and random created characters (Assassin, Berserker, Keres...) and special characters (Will-o-the-Wisp, Night Terror). You might find the shortest way to the boss, or you might dive deep into the hidden labyrinth to unlock new stuff and get more money. Then, there is the whole Chronicles of the Sword mode which, while a bit sub-par in execution, gives you a whole story parallel to the main one, as well as stages with extra properties that you praised in SCII, such as a slippery stage, or a stage where your health decreases. Then, there is the Mission mode, a simplified version of the SCII Weapon Master, where you can fight in various different (and fun!) circumstances. I was always intrigued by that huge Hephaestus's statue, for example. There is also the shopkeeper level (they keep running around), the hot-potato stage, a spinning stage, etc. The Practice mode is probably the most detailed one in any SoulCalibur. There is the regular Arcade and VS (and you can also play on special stages). There is the (kind of random) Tournament mode. There is the Character Creation mode with ACTUAL NEW (and quite interesting, though admittedly underwhelming in terms of command list size) FIGHTING STYLES: So much stuff to unlock. The museum with battle exhibition, artwork, etc. And that's about it for modes.

You really did SC3 super dirty here. An Arcade and Tales of Souls is actually amazing (the latter having multiple endings per character depending on choices and QuickTime events), Chronicles of the Sword is by far the most creative thing to come out of the series with the RTS and incorptation of a long going story of armies and corruption. No word of the Coliseum with its special rules and boss fights. No mention that the character creator has 17 original sets of moves that don't belong to existing fighters separated into classes of RPG staple roles. No mention of usage of this extensive customization system to bring back legacy characters like Hwang and Arthur, and no mention of the fact that this Create-a-Soul mode has never been used ever again, as every other SC game just steals its moves from existing characters. Did you know this is the only SC where you can explicitly play as an old woman that can look the part? Also, Abyss isn't "basically Inferno," he's like a roided up Zasalamel meets Tekken 5 Jenpachi. Hearing that from you honestly makes me doubt you played the game at all, if longer than one session and a TV tropes skim.
@kamenanew98672 жыл бұрын
Hm, I agree with all but your final point here. It's totally possible he just didn't feel the game, and so didn't play it fully, and that makes total sense as the souls series for me is great. But 2 is trash to me in nearly every way, and while I Did play it...even beat it once...I can in no way say I experienced the game like at all. Just trudged thru it, got it finally over with never to be played again. So if I were to review the whole series, that would be my weakest part, sadly. As I'd Have to do a bunch of internet research to tell ppl all about the game, and when I review a thing I just kinda..review my experience with it? Shrug.
@Goblin_Hands2 жыл бұрын
@@kamenanew9867 The best things about 2 were the obvious: the intro and guest characters. Spawn is probably a lot cooler than any other guests outside of Darth Vader. Obviously, it looks a lot more appealing than SC1, like it is the game where Ivy and Taki became waifu's, so it definitely stepped the bar up at the time, but when people say it is definitively the best uncontested I feel like they definitely never played 3 or even 4 or 6: all 3 are probably a lot better, and I only really played the PS2 version, so my Link/Spawn experience is limited, and Heihachi wasn't special because Tekken 3, etc had far cooler characters like Ogre, Jin/Kazuya, Law, Bryan, I think even Eddie would have been funner.
@Goblin_Hands2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, SC3 is definitely the best, I think Zasalamel transforming into Abyss is the closest we get to an inspiring boss outside of Nightmare becoming Night Terror, which is also in the game as the secret boss, so ironically every other SC game feels like actual whimpers. Did he ever try and fight Colossus or the challenges? The single player mode is literally the ONLY good Single player mode in the entire franchise. I was so damn addicted I couldn't really put it down. I made so many cool characters too, and I think overall they added a lot of good customization to standard characters in later games (allowing tattoos and items with custom placements is awesome), but they must have forgotten they cut all the extra movesets from 3 and so they too feel inferior. I think 2's intro is the best, but that's like the only thing any other game has over it.
@kamenanew98672 жыл бұрын
@@Goblin_Hands I'd say the ps2 version is sadly the weakest. But I say sc2 is my personal favorite despite not.only.playing but also owning several others, some you mentioned. To me it's the combat. It was so fast and smooth, none of this special ultra win instantly moves, and with each game they tweak the combat some and to be honest I'm not a fan of the combat in several SC games. Maxi is all but ruined as is mitsirugi, they slowed them down and changed their combos to where they no longer play like they used to. So due to that 2 is still my favorite.
The soul calibur 3 chronicles of the sword mode will always be the coolest soul calibur thing ever. It felt like I was truly in the game, fighting my story. I played it hundreds, maybe a thousand hours just on chronicles of the sword, playing and replaying it. It made me actually want to get good at the game with every character, which I did, which was kinda pointless because none of my friends played it. I figured I would try and recapture the spark with 5, but was very disappointed. I made alot of friends online though, and we played it to death, fighting other online "clans" for months. SC3 was my entire childhood. That game had so much single-player content in it for a fighting game of its time and even after its time. I spent a fuck-ton of time playing Chronicles of the Sword, trying to find all the different paths in the arcade mode to get the different story bits and all the different final bosses, trying to unlock all the cool extra characters (I still love Revenant and remake him in every game), and grinding for money to unlock all the extra character parts and weapons and gallery stuff. The created characters in the game also featured original movesets unique to them. Something no other game in the franchise has done and, for me, one of the coolest things about the game. I was really disappointed you just didn't give it the time of day because there's a lot to the game from a single-player perspective. Even if it was a bit clunky at times, and it was, it was still the most solid single-player experience in the whole series.

@Thalanox2 жыл бұрын
@SpaceBoy I'm not a "new gamer". The glitches I was talking about regarding SC3 happened because it launched in arcades (in japan) and on consoles pretty much simultaneously. This is in contrast to the other games in the SoulCalibur series before that point, which launched on arcades for a while before being brought to consoles. The extra playtesting time in the arcades allowed the developers to find and fix glitches for the console releases. The idea is that there are more glitches in the home console SC3 than in the earlier home console SoulCalibur games because they didn't use the staggered arcade -> console release pattern that they did before.

Soulcalibur VI is not only a reboot, it tries to connect all the games of the series. Also, it makes the same thing that happened in Mortal Kombat franchise after Armageddon. In fact, Zasalamel receive a vision from his future self from Soulcalibur IV and so he decides to not die and change his plan. Also, Cassandra makes a confront with her future self from Soulcalibur IV too, because at the end of that game, Cassandra get swallowed in the Astral Chaos, travelling in various worlds, like Unbreakble Souls or Broken Destiny, warning finally her past self about what would happen to her family and her sister Sophitia. Also, thanks with the last update happened the last year, we have this mysterious character, Acht, who is nothing else that another version of Iska Farkas from Soulcalibur Legends and apparently a former comrade of Z.W.E.I. from Soulcalibur V. SC2 was my first Soul game as well. I was lucky (spoiled) enough to play it on all three consoles of the time, and I still own my GameCube and PS2 copies. SC3 is my favorite, though, and subjectively the best! Zasalamel, Setsuka, and Tira were so unique in their appearances and fighting styles, but they merged perfectly into the historical fantasy setting. The stages were beautiful. The music continued to be perfect. The engine ran smoothly. I was immensely disappointed with IV compared to III. None of the characters looked like their ethnicities, the costumes were ugly, (except Sophitia's gladiator costume which is amazing), the custom character system was trash, and the armor breakage mechanic was such a contrived excuse to hit people and watch their clothes fall off. Ever since IV was released under the Bandai-Namco banner, it's been my (salty) opinion that the former brand ruined the series. However, VI did pique my interest as it seemed like a return to the roots. I'd like to play it before it becomes obsolete.
@MALICEM12 Жыл бұрын
I like some of the costumes in 4 (like Talim's, so cute in that big dumb hat) and the armor break mechanic was really cool! (Of course back then for horny reasons, let's be honest that's always been a big draw to the series) but also because it just makes the fights have more impact and seem more dynamic and badass.

SC3 to me was the best. Especially Chronicles of the Sword mode. I would play that mode so much. Building up my characters. Challenging myself like if a chapter said you can have 4 characters I'd only use 3 or something. Plus I enjoyed building my characters HP up to Lv. 99. But the story itself was actually interesting. I will say that the game for the Wii... I played it and I was like meh. Its decent but nothing special. Never finished it

Stopped watching after SC III which IMO is still one of the best games in the franchise. It had a robust character creation, story mode, and granted Chronicle Mode was gimmicky, still highly enjoyable. Wish the newer games had as large a selection for character creation.

My favorite over all will always be Soul Calibur 3. 3 had the best single player mode in Chronicles of the Sword. In fact, my brother and best friend back in the day turned Chronicles into almost a party game by each having our own custom characters in and whenever it was their turn for a fight passed the control. The create a fight has never been topped since 3. Sure 5 and 6 added the patterns and stickers that could be used to creativity create items that weren't just in the game but my biggest gripe with 4-6 could be described as "No you can't wear a belt with this cape. Totally clashes". Also the fact that they got rid of the all the "generic" weapon styles in favor of having to make your character copy someone from the roster. Now Soul Calibur 2 I could argue did play better. Almost flawlessly in fact, but everything 3 brought to the table puts it above for me.

Soul Blade was my first PlayStation game and first video game ever! Soul blade has a special place in my heart. I was a huge fan Soul blade, Soulcalibur 2, and Soulcalibur 4. After reading some of the comments it looks like I missed out on SC3. I remember briefly playing it but never owning it.

Soul Calibur IV also had a ton of bonus characters that were made specifically for the game if I remember right. The devs enlisted a bunch of manga artists to make a bunch of cool designs that they then used for multiplayer. I think there were around 6 of them.

I grew up with Soul Calibur IV because of the Star Wars characters. That game holds a special place in my heart, it's also the only Soul Calibur I've really played before. Many memories were made with that game. Also I was hoping you'd mention KOS-MOS as a create a soul in Soul Calibur III, because I am also a huge Xenosaga fan. And then you did. I proceeded to get really excited that Xenosaga was acknowledged. One of my pipe dreams is that she'll show up again in another Soul Calibur, this time as an actual character. But yeah, amazing video. Really enjoyed it!

I had a much less positive impression of SC4. While I didn't hate the game it just felt a lot more sluggish to control than SC1&2 IMO. When I jumped back to SC1 on XBLA it really hit home how much smoother that game played. The finishing moves didn't do much for me either but then again I kind of wish that the current trend of doing dramatic camera zooms and turning supers and finishing moves into cut scenes is much less fun to play than back when they would just be really cool moves that could whiff of the first hit and still keep going, giving the opponent more of a challenge to punish them.

I view IV as one of the weaker games, but I spent so much time in Tower of Lost Souls. Progressing further is a good way to unlock equipment for custom characters, which was some incentive for me to check out at first, but that absorbed me into a gameplay loop of fighting waves of enemies with one or two custom characters onto whom I kept adding more stat-boosting equipment the more I unlocked. The tacked-on stats and attributes aren't great for the other modes, but it's satisfying if only for that purpose. IV was actually my own first HD game as well, so I found ways to sink time into it. But I also can't help but think that IV's story mode, almost entirely devoid of any story outside the opening text crawls and ending scenes, is such a step down from III's. It's a shame you didn't talk about all the cool things you can unlock in III's Tales of Souls by selecting specific choices or playing well, including the route to the true final boss.
