Honestly I feel like gen 2 games were meant to be played this way. You’re not supposed steam through the game like traditional Pokémon games. That’s why trainers Pokémon have lower levels, you’re supposed to befriend the trainers and battle them again over time. Eventually you’ll be able to get around the same level range as Blue and Red where if you’d play it like other Pokémon games you’d barely scratch level 50 by the time you get to kanto. It’s the ultimate leisure experience Pokémon wise at least. I remember Tamashii theorizing this in one of her videos a few years ago and it makes sense to me at least.

So the Bug catching contest is done by stat totals- the higher the stat totals of the pokemon, the more likely you are to win. Unfortunately due to a glitch... this includes the HP stat. meaning if you damage it to make it easier to catch, then you lessen your chance of actually winning the bug catching contest. Hope this helps explain it!
@duykle55

Suggestion: next time you do a 100-days in pokemon thing, ya should try doing it with a cool fangame i found called Crystal Clear. Seriously it would be a great way for you to roam the regions freely and make your journey your own unique one, especially since there’s extra events and a lot to do! Oh and also you can walk with a follower pokemon, just like HGSS! There isn’t really any changes to the battling thing though, so it still feels like a bit of classic Crystal there.

Really interesting concept here... arrange in-game events so they take up "time" and progress the day? Like, visiting a PokeCenter is 3 hours. Travelling to a new route/city area is an hour, every wild battle is 5 minutes or something. Then see how long it takes you to play. Or give yourself a time limit. Sort of a different type of speed run?

For the Bug Catching Contest the points are actually based on a bunch of criteria. Their stats, the species (to an extent) and how healthy it was when it was captured. Meaning if you weaken a Pokémon you actually make it harder to win the prize. And if their stats aren't good then it's also not likely you will win.

A part of the Bug Catching contest rankings that the game never mentions, is that the CURRENT HP of your captured Pokemon affects your score, so weakening a Pokemon to catch them actually hurts your score, whereas catching at full health drastically increases your chance of winning.

Your bug catching contest points are calculated by the pokemon stats. The problem is that the game calculates your points by the current stats, not the total stats. So if you weaken a pokemon to catch it you reduce its points because you reduce the current HP value by a lot and HP makes up a good chunk of your evaluation. For a guaranteed win you have to try to not damage your pokemon as much as possible or heal it after (not sure if possible during the contest).

And even after 100 days there's still so much more to do! The Friday-Lapras encounter in the cave, the ruins of Alph, the labyrinth at the Lake of Rage, the weekly power-up items you get from the 7 siblings scattered around Johto, the daily challenge at the Viridian Trainer's House, etc... Great concept for a video, though! 😁

I love the music in this gen. And the colors on the GBC are just pleasing. I miss pixel art pokemon games, man it'd be cool if they made a dragon quest xi:s styled approach to the next pokemon entries where there are "8-bit" sections or something. I can see it happening since dragon quest is already a huge inspiration to pokemans...
