Nowadays there's so many ways to buy and play games, you've got your digital downloads, subscriptions, cloud gaming, and remote play! Remote Play has always been a neat feature, allowing you to remotely access and play your console. Sony went all-in on this back in the day with PS3 and PSP, then PS4 and PS Vita, and now: PS5 with phones, tablets, or PC's. Personally I've never cared much for using this, but I figured let me give it a go for a week straight. So here's how it went! (Now I want a McRib, which if you've watched the above, might make more sense).

Really dig these videos lately - the trophy hunting videos and this have been really entertaining. I do typically like videos which just bullet point the pros/cons of something like streaming but this, actually kinda brings us along for each experiment and gives a more practical view on how someone would be using this functionality. Additionally this sort of thing often doesn’t get talked about post-launch.

I’ve played a ton of South Park the fractured but whole through GeForce now recently while on breaks at work and honestly it’s been fantastic. I’ve dabbled with it at home for fps games and through Ethernet on a fibre connection, it’s doable but less than ideal for sure. (A lot of my good fortune with GeForce now is due to the fact that I’m physically close to the Canadian east coast servers, Xbox cloud hasn’t been as kind to me unfortunately)

Honestly I used to be of the same opinion but , in anticipation of the portal, I tried playing via remote play on my Mac. I was pleasantly surprised and I was playing God of War Ragnarok too. I ended up beating a couple of bosses using it when all I really wanted was to finish a few sidequests. I still probably won't use it for twitchier games like COD multiplayer and rhythm games, but other games I would be completely fine playing through remote play.

I have been using remote play lately with MW2 and Ragnarok. My PS5 is in the bedroom and the wife doesn’t like it when I play into the wee hours at night when she’s trying to sleep. So far, 10+ with the iPad Pro and a separate Dual Sense controller. I really can’t tell the difference between playing natively or remotely as long as I’m next to the router. I just installed Chiaki on my Steam Deck and I think it will be my go to setup going forward. Love the content. Keep it going bro.

Awesome experiment for a video. I did want to put my 2 cents in that while I don't use it much there have been times where using remote play on PC has been awesome. When the living room TV is being used or if I'm wanting to hang out in Discord it's been a playable experience. I've even streamed it to my friends in Discord and it went fairly smooth. It's not a solution that'll beat just directly playing without stream services but I'm thankful to have it if I ever need the option.

Recently found your channel and loving the PS content! I'm a big skeptic on remote play, and even with AX Wi-Fi it's just not quick enough for me at home. Also, on a 1000/50 internet connection I still haven't had luck with streaming it out of the home with low enough latency to be playable. But one good use I've found is with an Android TV box hooked up to the bedroom TV. It's all wired up with ethernet so I can stream my PS5 games to another room from the console. It works pretty well.

i been using it for years since the vita for ark survival evolved. i check on my base from work, feed babies, defend allies, whatever. if i was trying to fight a boss in elden ring or something, yea thats not happening, but it has its uses. Just surprised to see the only thing thats changed over the years was the ui, 60fps and 1080p update. The latency seems pretty consistent over the last 6 or so years.

I used remote play in a practical scenario recently. I traveled to my parents place and played NFS Unbound on my iPad Mini 5. I was very surprised with the responsiveness, while there was a noticeable change in input lag, it was nowhere near enough to actually disrupt my experience or reaction time in a single-player environment, Though I feel a multiplayer game would struggle with this and possible have more input lag by default. Another thing is make sure nothing is downloading while playing remote play, in hindsight this is obvious, but as I was playing I started downloading Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Cyberpunk 2077. The decrease in quality and increase in input lag was IMMENSE, and as soon as I paused both downloads it returned to an extremely playable state.

I quite like remote play for traveling. I often drive to my parents or on weekend trips with my motorcycle and then obviously don't want to take the big baby with me, but I'll always take my laptop anyway and then I just need the controller to be able to play. It obviously depends on the connection speed (my home network is good, WLAN at my parents is sometimes dicey) and I wouldn't want to play any super fast paced games on it, but for a lot of other games, where the occassional short dip in framerate isn't a problem (puzzlers, sims, turn-based, etc) , it's a really solid way to play while away from home.
@gueeds23
@gueeds23 Жыл бұрын
Remote Play, when it works, is great for slower paced games like turn based rpgs or visual novels. The problem starts to be when the latency even on local connections starts to impact the experience. It is almost unplayable outside the local network unless you are on amazing internet. I’ve also had the connection be really poor even on a local connection where every 5 seconds the video would drop 10 or so frames but the sound kept going. Makes everything unplayable

I love my backbone. Though - due to some minor latency, I generally use my backbone for games that don’t require too much timing. So, I use it for visual novels, some action games (got the platinum on Cult of the lamb all on the backbone). Button inputs feel almost precise with my home network connection. If I were to use my a Bluetooth controller, I notice a lot more latency, so I just use the backbone, since it’s direct Input as opposed to Bluetooth (so it helps with diminishing input lag with it already being streamed)

Your upload speed to outside your network was certainly holding you back. Did you mention if your Playstation was connected via ethernet or wireless because wire would help with latency. You were likely getting well over 300 upload and download while inside your home network because your app and PlayStation were connected directly inside the network and using the routers rated network speed which is different then the network speed the ISP provides.

This video demonstrates that most people don't understand how their home network makes or breaks game streaming. He spent a week "testing" it with pretty limited understanding. I have fiber internet at home and my ps5 is wired. In home streaming is flawless and out of home is almost always really good. Currently playing ffxvi almost entirely remote either via steamdeck/chiaki or via my galaxy z fold 4 on ps remote play when away from home

I used to use PS4 remote play a lot a few years ago. While the experience isn’t great, I feel you just need to temper your expectations with it. My partner was at university at the time in a different city and I’d travel down every weekend to see her. She also worked over the weekends so while she was at work I’d chill on remote play on her iMac. While the experience wasn’t perfect, it was most certainly better than not having the option at all.

I just bought the backbone for myself last month. I’m really enjoying it so far, but it’s certainly best for certain types of games more so than others. Maybe it’s just a matter of needing to get used to it more. I’ve been working on the 100% for god of war, and I find that it’s definitely harder to play with the backbone, but definitely not impossible. While I’m also playing final fantasy 7 remake, which has simpler controls and is much better suited for it. And then I’m also playing midnight suns which is perfect for the backbone since it’s not reliant on quick decisions.

Cloud gaming and remote play both have a long way to go. The best setup I would recommend is to get a Steam Deck with a dock. I have it and I can play so many games in both handheld mode or on my PC monitor or on my TV. Steam Deck is an amazing versatile tech.

@@h.a.6060 it's already at an acceptable level is just the fact that the the internet infrastructure of the world isn't on the same level. I've been using remote play for years and unlike in this review I don't have many of these problems. 1gbps download 45 upload and my phone has 5G+. Also make sure you're using your own equipment for internet and not using the ISP provided equipment I suggest.

@@jimmyjay689 been using remote play since the PS3 days (2008), it really has come a long way but the internet of the world is still lagging behind in many places. I have a friend who's paying the same amount for their internet service as I am but they only get 300 download 10 upload speed where I'm getting 1 gig download 45 upload speed.

@@AhmazinSKM Big this. Give Google Opinion Rewards a month or three (not that long), and you can get this virtually free. I love the button interface for PSPlay, it makes it really easy to play simple games like Uno and Minecraft Dungeons. Since I have a Samsung S10+, I like plugging my phone into a hotel room TV with an adapter and playing with my DS4. I've been able to play Black Ops Cold War and keep a positive K/D. Really nice, much better than the native PS Remote Play.

I just think at this point in time where internet connection still is not reliable to play video games, it's more practical for Sony to make a mobile device like Steamdeck that can play PS4 and PS5 games directly (albeit at lower resolutions or frame rates perhaps) from installation. But Sony obviously doesn't care about that even though it can bring them opportunities to sell more digital games. Not a smart move in my opinion.

Steam Deck gameplay on Xbox Cloud Streaming is alright, if not a little slow depending on where you are connected to. When I played it at my university, the connection was pretty stable with some minor hiccups like the quality dropping. But it is still playable, depending on which genre of game you are playing.

The official app has problems this has been known and updates have been super slowwww there. On android try PS Play it’s $7 and it’s better than the official Sony remote play app. I was close to getting a backbone but then I decided against it. PS Play gives me rumble and dualsense features via OTG wired connection on android. Plus I can change the light of the dualsense to whatever I want. Also a bunch of 3rd party controllers are supported on PS Play and there’s aspect ratio, you can fill the entire screen and remove those black bars with no real loss to important screen info. I know using a paid 3rd party app may put off some but it’s worth it yo…PS Play on android get it.
