308Win is a perfect cartridge for deer stalking because it burns a fast burning powder very efficiently for a 150 grain bullet.

.30-'06 doesn't always shoot well with modern powders, it prefers older, slower, bulkier powders like 4150. Unlike a lot of other cartridges, for .30-'06 it's often best to chose a powder which will fill the cartridge case completely, or even over-fill (compressed loads). Thanks for the video.

I have and like both. My preference is for the 308 as well - shorter action, lighter weight rifles, only slightly less versatile, equal on game performance as far as I can tell. I load both super and subsonic loads from 115 grains to 220 grains, cast and jacketed bullets. From Grouse to Elk, inexpensive plinking to long range shooting, the 308 has it covered.

Greetings from Sydney ! I love watching your videos and I have bought a few buck and bark river knives after watching your reviews on them! I am a 30-06 fan, I do own a few different calibers but my 30-06 is my favourite! I have a 308 too but it’s a heavy barrel and more for target shooting. To make the 30-06 really shine I load mine with a heavier projectile and use a slower burning powder, like a 165 Sierra Gameking and 57 grains of H4350, here is Australia it’s called AR2209. I use that combo on any deer and always have good results. I understand that the 308 using less powder, having similar velocity with a 150 grain projectile and still having the same result, a deer on the ground is a more economical choice. Keep up the great videos my friend!

I don't know if you have thought about this but 6.5 creedmore is considered ballistically superior at long range to .308 with equal or less felt recoil at a very similar case size. I don't know about the availability of 6.5 in Japan though.

Thank you very much for your Video. Please allow me to give you some of my Findings as an Advice: I'd use Hodgdon Varget in the 308. It's much more Temperature Stable and will give similar Velocities in hot and Cold Weather. I use a Laser Rangefinder and a Scope with easily to adjust Turret (Zeiss ASV) and Markings in Meters for my Hunting. For European Deer the 308 is plenty enough, even for Damwild at 400m. I have a 30-06 too, but to me it makes no sense. It burns more Powder and gives more Power than I might need.

You just realized why the 308 is so much more popular than the 30-06. Almost the same ballistics in a shorter case, short action rather then a long action. Just a better round all together. With the available powders and projectiles of today, the 308 is a great round. Easy to load for and very accurate

I also find that for deer hunting at ranges from 50-400 yards the .308 (I shoot a Tikka T3 with a 165 grain Hornady SST) is better for me. I use less powder than in my 270 WSM or .300 WM and it's just as accurate with far less recoil and the brass is WAY cheaper. Others may disagree, but to each their own, I know what works for me.

I should try the Barnes TTSX 130GR. Thanks.
@ruthless46457 жыл бұрын
I have tried the Barnes TSX 150 grain bullets (not the TTSX) and found them to be not as accurate as the Hornady SST's and a "tougher" bullet, meaning they don't expand as well and have a tenancy to just pencil through a deer and not really open up. The TTSX may perform better, don't know I've never shot it. Your mileage may vary. EDIT: - *-Just read below that in Japan you seem to be restricted to using monolithic/metal bullets in order to protect the Eagle. There are several good mono bullets on the market from Barnes, Hornady, Nosler etc. I've never shot most of them but I've read very good reviews on several. Good luck.
@kingduckford7 жыл бұрын
+vpsaline What kind of deer are you shooting, and at what ranges? There can be a world of difference between a 100 pound runt white tail at 100 yards and a big Sitka at 300 yards. 130 grains is pretty light for caliber for deer, especially bigger deer, and especially at longer ranges where the BC and loss of energy because of less momentum come into play. 150 is about as light as you should choose for .308/30-06, and even then you'll find good arguments for 165+ grains. So, I'd give this advice a no, considering the hunting conditions considered. Also, it is truly unfortunate that the Japanese hunters are restricted to non lead bullets. None of them perform very well at all, and always inferior to high end jacketed lead core.
@zeissOholic6 жыл бұрын
+kingduckford. You're making a comment about a bullet you've obviously never used. That's typical arm chair internet stuff. The Barnes TTSX 130gr is perfect in the .308 because of it's long bearing surface and being a monolithic bullet it is at least the equal of a 150gr cup and core bullet. I've been using a .308 for over forty years and where I live (New Zealand) we can hunt deer all year round.

Have you ever considered the Steyr Pro-hunter line of rifles? Very accurate, excellent triggers and clip fed. The Steyr clips are the only ones I am aware of that hold the loaded rounds to the degree there is no tip damage from recoil. The Steyr safety is completely silent. A 308 winchester will cleanly drop any deer sized animal ever made at any reasonable range. So will a 30-06. However 5 shots of a full power 30-06 off the bench generally gives me a headache. The 30-06 can generally be loaded to 100fps faster with bullets less than 180 grains. With 180gr and heavier bullets the 30-06 all things being equal performs better. The case capacity of the two is different, it all flows downhill from there. You are severely limited by only being able to hunt with lead free bullets. I thought the cases in the video showed signs of neck cracking. Hot loads in either caliber will shorten case life. Always inspect and discard any questionable cases. It isn't a firm rule but in general the 308 performs best with ball powders and the 30-06 performs best with stick type powders. Have handloaded for may years. For a 308 shooting 150 or 165 grain bullets WW748 or Hodgen BL-C(2) have always been the most accurate for me. However your mileage may vary.

I've watched your hunting videos for a few years. I know Sako rifle is also popular in Japan. Could you tell me your experience between Sauer 101 vs Sako 85. I currently have Sako finnlight 243. I am very happy with that for deers. However, I will be relocated to Colorado soon. For Elks, I am thinking between Sako Grizzly 30-06 or Sauer 101 forest 30-06. I am introduced to the Sauer 101 from your videos, which looks pretty nice. Do you have any thought/experience/recommendation?

Virtuovice, do I remember correctly that you used to hunt big game with a bolt action shotgun with slugs? I thought it was a Winchester Model 70 chambered in 20 ga. Perhaps I'm thinking of someone else, though.
@jimenagulla90817 жыл бұрын
30_06 shines with heavier bullets 165gr and up, for deer the 308 is just fine, for larger game, elk, moose and such the 06 is a better cartridge., 180gr @2700fps is the benchmark for hunting cartridges . Accuracy depends on the rifle ,NOT the cartridge, while 308 is notoriously accurate so too can be the venerable 30-06 springfield. You need more than 1 powder to compar the 2 cartridges. Just remember one thing, the 308 Winchester is 90% of the 30-06 and that's NOT a bad thing to be remembered by
@justafloridamanfromthe75thRR3 жыл бұрын
Accuracy depends heavily on the cartridge as well.
@kingduckford7 жыл бұрын
Ah, the old curse of the big cartridge, too much space in too many cases (pun intended). Big case may mean big power, but small case means efficiency. It is amazing to see how much powder it takes to get a tiny bit more performance from a caliber with different cartridges, big increases of powder for relatively little velocity. Your choice is astute and well thought. Many people buy big cartridges only to regret the recoil and costs, for no extra gain on a deer. You think like me, wasted money on powder is just waste.

Hi Wako, I'm very glad you're posting videos again! I've seen every one you've made. I'm very curious to know your situation with Bark River Knives. If you still collect them, if you've found a new brand you like, etc. I'm considering buying my first one, but would like to know if your opinion of them has changed to the point where you wouldn't recommend them now. (I should say, that, I called Mike Stewart yesterday to ask him some questions about the grinds, and a few other things, and I brought your name up to him. He had nothing but nice things to say about you, and mentioned that you're a surgeon, and joked that you try to make all of your knives as sharp as a scalpel lol and that you're very skilled at sharpening knives, and the average, unskilled person shouldn't attempt what you're doing ) anyway, thanks for the vids! Hope to see more. Peace 🇯🇵🇨🇦

Good rifle but Honto Takai. I have both the 308 and 7mm08 and I prefer the 7mm08 for the simple reason, it shoots and hit like a 308 but kick like a 243. Give the 7mm08 a try. you will be surprise how well it shoots. Barnes have the 150gn TTSX and Hornady have the 139gn GMX. Both deadly projectiles on the biggest deer. Is the Sierra Matchking solid copper? Am I right to say that it is not permissible to use lead core bullets for hunting in Japan?
@virtuovice7 жыл бұрын
The Match King is only for target shooting. We need to use solid copper bullets in the field to protect the precious eagles from lead intoxication. Thanks.

So what?
@jn37507 жыл бұрын
For best accuracy, you NEED a chronograph, a ballistic software and a good-tracking optic (BTW, your groups are too large - about 1.5-2 MOA. You should be able to get 3/4 MOA with both 30-06 or 308 at that distance. Both my BROWNING X-BOLT HELL'S CANYON/Remington Police and Leopold 3-18X FFP can do this all day long). For hunting 30-06 is a far more versatile cartridge, especially on large games / brown bears in your neck of the wood. For sniping/tactical applications, 308 is slightly better.
@justafloridamanfromthe75thRR2 жыл бұрын
I'ts not just slightly better it is FAR BETTER for sniping and tactical applications. As far as big games go, yes, if an animal is too big for the 308 the 30-06 is the better option- BUT there's a caveat: if you are hunting an animal that is too big for the 308 than you should be already using 300 win mag there. The 308 and the 300 overlap eachother, so if the 308 can't handle it anymore, the 30-06 is not ideal there anymore either.
